Extreme Multitasking: How to Run Multiple Apps at the Same Time on Your Nexus 7 (No Root Required)

Extreme Multitasking: How to Run Multiple Apps at the Same Time on Your Nexus 7 (No Root Required)
Recently, I offered a guide detailing how to run two separate windows on a Nexus 7 tablets for better multitasking. While extremely useful, that mod was limited to only two windows, and you also needed root access to use it.Today, I'll be highlighting a non-root Android app that doesn't limit you to just two separate windows. It's called Multitasking by Oryoncorp, and it lives up to its name. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Setting Up Your PreferencesOpen the application and go through the extremely simple options—it's pretty basic in terms of what you can do. Start by turning the app on in the top right corner, then select whether you want it to start automatically at boot. Work Area Limitations will limit windows to the perimeters of your device's screen, and I recommend leaving this setting unchecked so you can move windows partially off screen. You may also want to adjust the Activation area to a comfortable size—for me, setting it to the largest area allowed for easy access. Other options include the ability to toggle the animations for opening the drawer and launching apps, setting default window sizes, and enabling pinch-to-zoom (versus one finger scaling).

Multitasking with Multiple WindowsSimply slide from left to right on your screen to open the sidebar where you can access specific apps and tools. Unfortunately, we're limited to the app's stock apps right now, but they are actually pretty good. No, you can't use Chrome or your standard Gallery, but the alternatives are easy to use and everything but the camera works flawlessly. Hopefully an update can enable the use of third-party apps, but for a non-root app, it's safe to say that I'm impressed. Turn your Nexus 7 sideways and utilize it in landscape mode, which seems more convenient when getting work done.

The Current Limitations of MultitaskingOn the negative side, this app is "free" but the amount of windows you use depends on credits, which can be earned either by liking, rating, sharing, watching ads, or other ways it provides. You can always just let the ads run while you're not using your Nexus, but yeah, it's a bummer. Developers need money too, and virtual currency is a way to generate revenue based on us, the people happily using their apps. He has stated that virtual currency will not be required in the coming update, but its replacement is anyone's guess.Give the app a try and let us know what you think. Finally, true multiple window multitasking on our Nexus 7s, all without requiring root—very cool indeed.

How To: Add & Delete 'Friends' on Your Apple Watch
Accessing and getting in touch with your favorite contacts has never been easier thanks to the "Friends" feature on the Apple Watch. However, this only applies to users who are running watchOS 2.2.2 and lower. When Apple issued watchOS 3, the "Friends" option was completely removed. So if you're running watchOS 3 or higher, you won't be able to follow these instructions.

How to Use the Friends List on Apple WatchUsing the side button from anywhere on the device, you can access your "Friends" list, where you'll see your contacts arranged in a circle. However, if you're running watchOS 3 or higher, the side button now gives you access to the app switcher, and "Friends" is completely gone. If you do have the "Friends" list, you can quickly call, text, and even use Digital Touch (which can send heartbeats and drawings) with those that matter the most. Image by Nelson Aguilar/Gadget Hacks If you have contacts that you've favorited on your iPhone, those will automatically appear in your "Friends" list. But as someone that personally doesn't have any favorite contacts, no one appeared. So how do you manually add and delete contacts from your "Friends" list?

How to Manage Contacts from Your 'Friends' ListOn your iPhone, go to the Apple Watch app and scroll down to "Friends." If you don't see this option, you are likely running watchOS 3 or higher. From this page, add all of your favorite contacts (up to 12), which will be organized on your Apple Watch in clockwork-fashion.Use "Edit" at the top right to shift the placement of the contacts, as well as delete them. You can also swipe left on a contact to get rid of it. Once you're done, just leave the app. Now when you hit the side button to access your Friends list on the Apple Watch, you'll see all of the contacts you've added, in the order you placed them.Don't Miss: How to Eject Water from Your Apple Watch's Speaker After Getting It WetFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: iOS 11.1 Is Officially Out, Includes New Emojis, App Switching Gesture & More
The first big update to iOS 11 since its release in mid-September just came out, so check your iPhone for a software update to iOS 11.1, because there are a few things you'll want from it. While there's no sight of Apple Pay Cash or Messages in iCloud, there are some significant improvements you'll need to know about.

1. There Are Over 70 New EmojisApple has released 70+ new emojis with iOS 11.1, including a host of mythical characters, new food, activities, clothing, more expressive faces, and gender-neutral emojis. If you use third-party keyboards such as Gboard, you may not see the new emojis unless you switch to the stock Apple keyboard — at least, until those third-party keyboards get updates themselves.Don't Miss: iPhone X's Most Technically Advanced Feature Might Just Be Animojis

2. The 3D Touch App Switching Gesture Is BackWhy did this go away in the first place?Apple has reintroduced the 3D Touch app switcher in 11.1, which was oddly taken out of the original iOS 11 release. Apple promised it would come back, and they came through. If you've never used the app switcher, we highly recommend you do — just 3D Touch the far left side of the display, then swipe right to move between your last two apps.
3. There's a Fix for the KRACK Wi-Fi VulnerabilityThe "KRACK" Wi-Fi vulnerability discovered earlier this month has now been fixed. This fix is an example of why it is highly recommended to keep your iPhone up to date — software updates can bring security fixes for huge vulnerabilities, so you don't have to use other methods to maintain security. If you keep behind, you're leaving yourself vulnerable to hacking, theft, or whatever vulnerabilities people find in the software.

4. There Are Labels Up Top in the Control CenterControl Center controls now will show a quick label up top when activated, giving you a better idea of what processes are currently activating on your iPhone. They only appear for a second or two, but that's enough time to read all it has to say. Some of the most helpful alerts are knowing when Do Not Disturb will turn back off when you toggle it on.
5. And That's Not All ...The new iOS 11.1 adds a few new Siri voice for other languages, removes the "beta" stamp for Portrait Mode in the Camera app, fixes slow Live Photos effects playback, prevents cleared emails from showing back up on the lock screen, fixes and improves various Accessibility features, various other security patches, and more.Don't Miss: iOS 11.2 Developer Beta Released — Wallpapers, Tweaked Emojis & MoreFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: 11 Reasons to Not Skip Out on AppleCare+ When Buying a New iPhone

News: 11 Reasons to Not Skip Out on AppleCare+ When Buying a New iPhone
At the outset AppleCare+ seems like an expensive option to tack onto your already pricey iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or other model iPhone. When you dig deeper, however, you'll see that its intimidating price tag pales in comparison to the fees you'll have to pay if you end up having to repair your premium device outside its one-year warranty. As durable as iPhones are with regards to daily use, they're far from indestructible. Since the iPhone 8 series and iPhone X, Apple has utilized metal-reinforced glass enclosures first seen on the iPhone 4. While they truly are a sight to behold, the 2018 iPhones are as prone to shattering on impact as its glass-encased predecessors.Because of this, AppleCare+ has become an even more appealing option, as it gives you an added layer of protection and helps ensure you don't go broke if you break your $1,000+ device. So if you're still on the fence about buying AppleCare+ for that iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or whatever you're planning on buying, keep reading further why Apple's protection plan is worth purchasing.Don't Miss: Why You Should Use eSIM on Your New iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR Before we dive deep into AppleCare+, please note that all the prices listed do not include taxes and fees, unless otherwise stated, and are subject to change without notice. Also, if you've purchased a device through the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is required on all the devices listed. Finally, all the prices given were sourced from Apple's official site.
1. AppleCare+ Covers Repairs the Warranty Doesn'tIf you're not already familiar, AppleCare+ is a protection plan that further extends your iPhone's standard one-year warranty coverage. The regular one-year warranty that comes with your iPhone is pretty limited in scope and only covers defects. The warranty doesn't protect your device against physical damage resulting in accidents, however, and will incur Apple's standard rates when taken to an Apple location for servicing. This is where AppleCare+ comes into play, and while it costs extra for two year's worth of coverage on your iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or other iPhone model, you'll be better prepared if disaster strikes. With AppleCare+, you get an added layer of protection that 's separate from your warranty, and it not only gives you priority access to Apple experts, but also offers you significant discounts on repairs. The plan offers the following:Apple hardware coverage including physical damage due to accidents. 24/7 priority access to Apple Support. Software troubleshooting and support. Express Replacement Service.
2. There's Now Two AppleCare+ Plans to Choose FromBesides troubleshooting and repairs, AppleCare+ now comes with an optional plan that you can get to protect your iPhone XS, XS Max, iPhone XR, or other iPhone model against theft and loss. Aptly named AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, the expanded protection plan offers all the provides a more streamlined service with regards to replacing your device if it ever gets lost or stolen.iPhone 7: $199.00 iPhone 7 Plus: $249.00 iPhone 8: $199.00 iPhone 8 Plus: $249.00 iPhone XR: $249.00 iPhone XS: $299.00 iPhone XS Max: $299.00 Using your carrier's insurance plan, you'd have to file all the necessary paperwork like police reports in order to process your claim. With AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, however, replacing your lost and stolen device is much easier and only requires your device to have its Find my iPhone feature enabled at the time it was lost or stolen for verification purposes.Apart from that, you'll also need to erase, disable, and transfer ownership of the lost or stolen iPhone before you're cleared to receive a replacement device. Once done, you'll have to finalize your claim the insurance company Assurant, which is the same procedure you'd go through if you filed a claim using your carrier's insurance plan.Bear in mind that you'll still need to pay a deductible if you file a claim using your AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss plan to replace your lost or stolen iPhone. The deductibles for each iPhone model is as follows:iPhone 7: $199 iPhone 7 Plus: $229 iPhone 8: $199 iPhone 8 Plus: $229 iPhone XR: $229 iPhone XS: $269 iPhone XS Max: $269
3. AppleCare+ Can Be the Cheaper Option in the Long RunAppleCare+ allows you to make up to two service claims a year, which can save you a ton of money if you're prone to breaking your device. For example, if you repaired the screen on your iPhone XS or XS Max twice in one year, for $29 each using your AppleCare+ coverage, that would total $257 with the plan's $199 price tag tacked on. In comparison, out of warranty repairs done with Apple will run your $329 for the XS Max and $279 for XS for a single screen repair. If you go the third-party route, these repair shops will charge you even more for the same service, and can range from $239 to $395 for an iPhone X screen replacement. This will cost you from $478 to $790 if you have to replace your screen twice. Here's the complete pricing for the orignal AppleCare+ plan, the one without theft and loss protection, irrespective of your carrier and your iPhone's storage capacity:iPhone 7: $129.00 iPhone 7 Plus: $149.00 iPhone 8: $129.00 iPhone 8 Plus: $149.00 iPhone XR: $149.00 iPhone XS: $199.00 iPhone XS Max: $199.00 Of course, having Apple perform a repair on an iPhone with more than one broken component can also cost you a pretty penny if done without AppleCare+. If you shatter the screen and the rear glass panel on your iPhone XS Max, for instance, Apple will charge you $549 to repair or replace the device, compared to $99 if you have an AppleCare+ plan. Therefore, it goes without saying that if you have a poor track record in keeping your iPhone in good condition, an AppleCare+ plan is a must-have. If you want a detailed price list for the repair services that Apple charges, tap on the link below to find out more.iPhone Service Pricing (United States)
4. AppleCare+ Can Be Paid in InstallmentsIf you're unable to pay for either AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss upfront, Apple gives you the option to pay for the protection in monthly installments lasting up to for months. Just bear in mind that you'll be paying more due to the taxes and other fees tacked onto each monthly payment. For example, paying the monthly fee of $12.99 for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss to cover your iPhone XR will total $311.76 when all is said and done, compared to $229 (plus taxes) if you paid for the plan upfront. Even if taxes came up to 15% ($34.35), paying upfront for the plan will still be cheaper overall and total around $263.35.iPhone 7: $5.99 a month for AppleCare+, $9.99 a month for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss iPhone 7 Plus: $7.99 a month for AppleCare+, $12.99 a month for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss iPhone 8: $5.99 a month for AppleCare+, $9.99 a month for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss iPhone 8 Plus: $7.99 a month for AppleCare+, $12.99 a month for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss iPhone XR: $7.99 a month for AppleCare+, $12.99 a month for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss iPhone XS: $9.99 a month for AppleCare+, $14.99 a month for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss iPhone XS Max: $9.99 a month for AppleCare+, $14.99 a month for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss Please note that if you purchased your iPhone using Apple iPhone Upgrade Program, you will only be charged monthly for the total cost of the AppleCare+ plan divided by 24 months, because Apple doesn't charge more each month for AppleCare+ when on the IUP.AppleCare+ coverage automatically kicks in the day you purchase the plan, which you can opt to buy for up to 60 days after you purchase your iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or other iPhone model. So if you bought your iPhone on December 1, you have up until January 30 to buy AppleCare+ to further protect it. If you preordered your iPhone along with AppleCare+, the plan activates once you receive the device.

5. Third-Party Repairs Can Cause More Issues Down the RoadWithout a doubt, repairing your iPhone at your neighborhood repair shop has its benefits, such as faster turnaround times and walk-in service without the need to schedule a consultation. Apple, on the other hand, is more methodical with servicing your iPhone and requires you to first start a service request and make an appointment beforehand. However, you might want to reconsider before getting your iPhone repaired by a third-party technician, as these can cause headaches for you in the long run. In fact, the latest disaster to hit iPhones repaired via unauthorized vendors came in the form devices repaired using third-party screens that lost touch functionality after updating to iOS 11.3 ( with many reporting the issue as far back as iOS 11). A third-party screen assembly for the iPhone 6S. As it turns out, iOS 11 deemed third-party displays incompatible, resulting in the touchscreen failing to register touches. Apple has since patched this issue with iOS 11.3.1, though it remains a valuable lesson to let only Apple and Apple-authorized vendors repair your broken iPhone to ensure smooth sailing even long after its fixed.
6. Turnaround Times for Repairs Will Be FasterApple is notorious for having exceedingly long turnaround times for repairs it performs, and it's not unheard of for people to wait for hours on end while their device gets serviced. Thankfully, Apple has implemented a change to the way it performs diagnostics and repair which is sure to reduce turnaround times significantly. In the past, Apple and Apple authorized service centers needed bulky electronic equipment to perform diagnostics on newly-repaired iPhones to check for full functionality before returning them to customers. 3D Touch (available on the iPhone 6S on up, minus the iPhone XR), in particular, relied on the calibration hardware to ensure it worked perfectly, which resulted in longer repair times.Fortunately, Apple has ditched the expensive hardware its depended on for all these years for a more streamlined software-based diagnostic tool to properly calibrate sensitive components like Touch ID and will not only bring down prices but also streamline repairs for faster turnaround times. According to iMore, Apple recently made an official announcement to its service centers stating:Apple is excited to announce that we have optimized iPhone display calibration to support your work in conducting an in store display repair.Beginning September 17, 3D Touch Calibration Fixtures will no longer be required to complete display repairs for iPhone 6S and later. We have optimized the calibration process using software. This means we can now calibrate a repaired iPhone by simply connecting the device to (redacted) running our calibration and diagnostics, without the need to run it through a separate ?xture......Most importantly it will save time for you and our customers.

7. You Don't Have to Go to Apple to Purchase AppleCare+You don't need to go to an Apple Store to get the plan, and can do it either online or over the phone. To purchase AppleCare+ using either methods, you'll need to let Apple run remote diagnostics on your iPhone to make sure that it works as it should. In addition, you'll also need to provide either your iPhone's serial number or proof of purchase for verification purposes.
8. You May Still Get AppleCare+ if Your iPhone Is BrokenAlthough a little sketchy, it's still worth mentioning that you might still be able to get AppleCare+ either via online or over the phone even if your iPhone is physically damaged. If your iPhone's screen is cracked, for instance, there's a possibility of the damage going unnoticed during Apple's remote diagnostic process. And if that turns out to be the case, you'll be able to purchase AppleCare+ right away and schedule a repair for your device at the nearest Apple location for a significant discount — minus the initial price for AppleCare+ itself, of course. In addition, your device will now be fully covered, giving you the ability to make up to two repair claims a year to ensure your iPhone never stays in a broken state for long.
9. You Don't Have to Buy AppleCare+ Right AwayAs mentioned before, Apple gives you time to weigh whether you should get AppleCare+ for your iPhone, even after you've purchased the device. The company gives you up to 60 days to get the protection plan if you decide it's right for you. So if you purchased an iPhone XS Max on December 1, you have up until January 30 of the following year to get either AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss to protect your device.
10. AppleCare+ Is TransferableAppleCare+ can be transferred, just not in the way you were hoping for. Unfortunately, you can't transfer an existing AppleCare+ plan from one iPhone to another, which means that you if decide to buy an iPhone XS, you'll need to purchase a whole new plan for it, as the existing coverage on your iPhone X will not carry over.Instead, the transfer process basically covers ownership, with Apple giving you the ability to sell or give your device away with its protection plan intact. So if you give or sell your device to someone else, have the option of transferring the AppleCare+ plan to the new owner or cancel it outright and receive a partial refund (more on that below).Don't Miss: Securely Erase Your iPhone When Selling, Trading, Returning, or Giving It Away If you're paying for AppleCare+ on a monthly basis and transferred the plan to someone else, they'll have to pick up the tab in order to receive the remaining coverage. It's worth noting that to commence with the transfer process, you'll need to surrender paperwork like your AppleCare+ service contract, proof of purchase, and the Plan Confirmation, among others, to the new owner. Of course, you'll also have to contact Apple and notify the company of the change in ownership.According to Section 9 of the terms of service for AppleCare+, your newly-transferred service plan will instantly cancel out if the owner fails to make a monthly payment. What's unclear, however, is who would receive the partial refund, if it's given at all. We contacted Apple to help clarify this matter, and are waiting for a response. We'll revisit this as soon as we have a concrete answer, so check back regularly.
11. You Can Cancel AppleCare+ Any TimeApple gives you the flexibility to cancel your AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss at any time without incurring any penalties. On the contrary, Apple will issue you a prorated refund for the time remaining on your coverage, provided you paid in full. For example, If you canceled your plan after exactly one year, Apple will give you a refund of about $100 (plus or minus some fees) for the time left on the basic plan.If you're paying monthly, you can cancel your AppleCare+ simply by not paying the monthly due to automatically remove it, or contact Apple directly to cancel your plan in advance. If you choose the latter, your plan will terminate on the last day of the month for which you paid. According to Section 8.2 of the terms of service for AppleCare+:Unless applicable local law provides otherwise, if you have made advance payments, cancellation will be deferred until midnight on the last day of the month for which the last monthly payment was paid. Your failure to timely and fully make any monthly payment will be deemed an expression of your intent to cancel your Plan consistent with the schedule described in this section.
— ApplePlease note that if you're on the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program and are paying extra to have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss on top of the complimentary AppleCare+ you already have, canceling the former will result in Apple issuing refunds (if any) to the bank that gave you the loan, as explained in Section 8 of iPhone Upgrade Program's terms and conditions.Don't Miss: 100+ Coolest New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Add Better Lighting Effects to Portrait Mode Photos on Your iPhone

How To: Add Better Lighting Effects to Portrait Mode Photos on Your iPhone
Apple first included a dual-lens camera onto its iPhone 7 Plus back in late-2016, yet not many developers besides Apple have harnessed the depth data that "Portrait" mode photos provide. A relatively new app is changing that, though, by using that depth information to let you add realistic-looking light sources to your photos.Created by Indice Ltd and first released in the iOS App Store on May 18, 2018, "Apollo: Immersive illumination" works with photos taken in Portrait mode on the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. It also works with Portrait lighting modes, though, Apple's lighting effects that you use will be removed before Apollo can work its magic; You can't add Apollo effects on top of Apple's lighting effects.Don't Miss: How to Use Portrait Lighting Mode on the iPhone X, 8 PlusWith this app, you can add up to 20 different light sources to any image it can read the depth information for. As for editing, there are two global settings you can adjust on the whole photo (shadows and effect range), as well as four parameters you can calibrate for each light source (color, distance, brightness, and spread).Apollo is the first app to use the depth data of your portrait mode photos to calculate photorealistic lighting. Using a proprietary graphics card processing algorithm, Apollo is able to illuminate a portrait scene in real time. Load up a photo from your gallery and start adding lights. Apollo will realistically calculate the effect of the light's distance, color, intensity etc.
— Indice LtdApollo does cost $1.99, but if you're a photo enthusiast that wants to make your subjects pop with realistic lighting effects, create a different mood in the picture, or add halos and emphasize silhouettes, it's an excellent investment.

Step 1: Install ApolloIf you haven't done so already, jump into the App Store to purchase and install "Apollo: Immersive illumination" on your iPhone. Remember, this is only for the 7 Plus, 8 Plus, and X — iPhones with dual-lens cameras.Install Apollo: Immersive illumination for $1.99 from the iOS App Store

Step 2: Find the Photo That You WantWhen you first open up Apollo on your iPhone, you'll need to grant the app access to your photo library, so go ahead and do so. Once done, you'll get a quick explanation of what type of Portrait mode images work best. The photo should have uniform lighting — no hard shadows or strong highlights. Low lighting photos, photos taken under an overcast sky, or selfies and closeups are perfect candidates. A crisp and steady photo results in crisp customized lighting. Practice makes perfect! Although Apollo is built with simplicity in mind, mastering its concepts may take some time. After tapping "OK" to dismiss the hints, you'll be taken right to the Library Photos page which only includes Portrait mode pics you took, that way you don't have to dig around trying to find a Portrait mode photo among all your other pics. Tap on the one you want to add lighting effects to and you'll be brought to the lighting editor.Don't Miss: How to Find the Normal Photos for Your Portrait Mode Images in iOS 11If the photo fails to meet some of the guidelines mentioned above, you may get a warning that "Apollo cannot process this photo," so you'll have to try another one or retake the photo if possible.

Step 3: Use the Help Tool to Learn the RopesI won't go into too much detail about to how to use Apollo since the app itself has a great help tool available and because half the fun is playing around and experimenting with different options and multiple light sources. As for those help tools, when you first start playing around, you'll see prompts right away that tells you how to interact with each tool available to you. You can dismiss these tools by tapping "Help" up top, and any time you forget how to use a particular tool you can reactivate the guidance by tapping "Help" again.

Step 4: Add Lighting EffectsLike I mentioned in the previous step, experimenting is the best way to get used to everything that Apollo can do to your images. Once you start playing around and seeing what you can do with lighting effects, you can begin shooting Portrait mode photos with Apollo in mind, shooting new images knowing exactly where you plan on putting new light sources and effects when editing.Light sources are represented by hollowed circles unless they are selected, then they are solid color dots. When editing a light source, you can change its location by moving the dot around. You use the toolbar at the bottom to adjust color (the temperature of the light), distance (in 3D space ... you can even place it behind an object to create halos and silhouettes), brightness (intensity), and spread (like a flashlight's adjustable focus). When you tap on the checkmark, you'll be able to create another light source (with the + button) or select another to edit (tap a circle), as well as adjust the amount of shadows that are automatically added to the whole image as well as the effect range overall. Tapping on the trash can icon when editing a specific light source will remove it from the draft.

Step 5: Preview the Original vs. ChangesAt any time, you can tap "Preview" up top to see the image by itself. If you double-tap the picture, it'll either zoom in or out. You can also pinch to zoom in and out. A long-press on the image will reveal the original image underneath all the added effects, so you can quickly compare which you like best. Once you're satisfied with your lighting scene, you can tap the "Share" button up top after exiting "Preview" mode to bring up the standard share sheet to send to other apps, copy, print, save, etc.If you want to know more of the backstory behind Apollo and how it came to be, read the developer's "behind-the-app" post on Reddit. They've been working on the app ever since November 2017, so there have been six solid months of development before Apollo was released.Don't Miss: How to Stop Portrait Mode from Eating Up Space on Your iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Galaxy S5 Battery Dies Too Fast? Here's Why & How to Fix It

How To: Galaxy S5 Battery Dies Too Fast? Here's Why & How to Fix It
Samsung makes some wonderful phones, but one thing I've noticed is that battery life can start to degrade over time, causing the phone to die a lot faster than it used to. If you've been experiencing this issue, and have asked yourself, "Why does my Galaxy S5 die so fast?" there are a few likely causes—and we've got you covered with troubleshooting tips and simple fixes below.
Reason #1: Bad BatterySmartphone batteries are not designed to last forever—in fact, they begin to show signs of degradation after as little as 1 year. This means that as time goes on, your smartphone's battery isn't physically capable of holding as much of a charge as it once was.The Galaxy S5 was released almost 2 years ago, so battery degradation is beginning to become an issue. On the bright side, though, the battery is easily replaceable, and Samsung-certified batteries are relatively cheap. So before you try anything else, I'd suggest that you purchase a replacement battery, which start at less than $10 on Amazon. Here's a super simple way to test your battery to see if it needs replacing:
Reason #2: WakelocksIf a degrading battery isn't your issue, you're probably dealing with wakelocks. These are services used by apps to prevent your device from sleeping so that they can post notifications and sync data in the background, but the downside is that wakelocks are a huge battery drain. If you're a rooted user, there are several tools available for identifying and stopping wakelocks. We've covered many of these in the past, so the following links should go a long way towards fixing your battery issues.Identify Battery-Draining Wakelocks & Stop Them for Good Boost Battery Life by Taming Android's Location Wakelocks If your device is not rooted, on the other hand, dealing with wakelocks requires a different approach. Your best bet would be to keep an eye on Android's battery menu to find the apps that are draining the most juice, then simply uninstall or disable the offenders. For more information on this subject, see Tips 1-3 at the following guide.Find Out What Apps Are Draining Your Battery on Android
Reason #3: TouchWizIf you still feel like your phone is dying too fast after replacing the battery and taming any wakelocks, the only culprit left is Samsung's proprietary Android skin, TouchWiz. This is the base operating system installed on Galaxy devices, and it's infamous for being bloated, slow, and unfriendly towards batteries.Aside from perhaps installing a custom ROM, there's no way to completely rid your device of TouchWiz, but there are methods for keeping its negative effects to a minimum. I've covered the process for slimming down TouchWiz in the past, so if you're interested, check out the article below.Minimize TouchWiz on Galaxy Phones for a More Fluid Experience Which of these tips ultimately solved the battery issues you've been having with your Galaxy S5? News: Samsung's Galaxy Note 6 May Let You Scan Your Eye to Unlock

Samsung's next Galaxy Note smartphone is expected to contain some nifty new additions that the company hopes will give it the long desired edge it has been seeking over Apple. One of those features that might make the difference? An iris scanner, which could make it the first major smartphone on the market to have that technology included. The idea of using eye detection software isn't new to Samsung—they've invested in EyeVerify, a company that works with OEMs to bring eyeprint verification to Android devices. However, according to a report from the Dutch website Galaxy Club, it appears that iris scanners may be a permanent part of the new Note 6.Don't Miss: The Biometric Authentication Conundrum Long-time Galaxy users may also recall a TouchWiz feature called Smart Stay that used the front-facing camera to detect whether you were looking at the screen. This was done to "smartly" turn the screen off when it wasn't being used. An iris scanner would go a long way to make this tech much more efficient. The report went on to share a form that noted the arrival of parts to Samsung's research and development team in India. It is worth noting that the form doesn't designate whether these "iris cams" are for the Note 6 or any other upcoming Samsung product, just "Samsung Mobile." Import form for Samsung Mobile showing the 'Iris Cam.'. Image via Zauba Technologies & Data Services What makes this information intriguing is that while there is a lot more attention being paid to other feature such as water resistance and the inclusion of a USB Type-C port with reversible connector, as reported by SamMobile, an iris scanner isn't totally out of the question, especially if it could be used immediately on a flagship device like the Note. It's also is technology that wouldn't break the bank in the long run with estimates at about $5 per unit. And it could give users an added level of comfort in case they lose their device or it gets stolen.Follow Android Hacks on Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks on YouTube, Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: 9 Ways to Lock Your Android Without Using the Power Button

How To: 9 Ways to Lock Your Android Without Using the Power Button
Given how much use it gets on a daily basis, the power button is always one of the first hardware features to call it quits on an Android phone or tablet. So if your power button is acting up, or you don't want it to, you can extend its lifetime by simply finding ways to use it less. One of the biggest and least important uses of the power button is using it lock the device. Why least important? Because there are plenty of ways to turn your screen off and lock the device, and here are 9 great examples.#1. Use Floating Softkeys (Android 2.2+)One of the simplest methods, which is still very convenient, is adding a softkey to your home screen. It'll be readily available, and with one tap, you'll be locking your device in a second or less.
#2. Let Gravity Do It for You (Android 2.3.3+)With the application Gravity Screen, there's no need to even touch the device, as setting it face down will automatically lock it. Just set your smartphone down while you work and conserve a little battery life. Pick it back up and Gravity Screen will automatically flip on the display for you.
#3. Give It a Quick, Firm Shake (Android 4.0.3+, Root)Shaking your phone may look odd if someone sees you out of the corner of their eye, but the action makes it easy to lock your Android whenever you want. The shake required is on the firmer side, but this prevents any accidents from happening with a hyper-sensitive motion sensor.
#4. Swipe Your Screen (Android 4.0+)Swiping is an action we are consistently performing while we use our devices, so add a simple swiping gesture that'll let you seamlessly power down the display and lock your device.
#5. Try an Invisible Shortcut (Android 2.2+)While you could use a visible shortcut to lock your device, using an invisible one alleviates home screen clutter, but it's also just cool because only you will know where you placed it.
#6. Double-Tap the Status Bar (Android 2.0+, Root)What makes the double-tap method useful is that it can be performed from anywhere on your device. Although this mod works on Lollipop-running devices, it's not the easiest to perform due to Lollipop's notification panel, so if you're having trouble getting it just right, consider using another method before settling on this one.
#7. Repurpose the Google Now Gesture (Android 4.0+, Root)Who honestly uses their Google Now gesture? If you're like me and find this gesture useless, then change what it does. By assigning the screen-off action to the Google Now gesture, you'll be able to get some practical use out of this feature with a simple swipe up.
#8. Place It in Your Pocket (Android 4.0+)Pocket Lock has one of the most practical methods for locking your device: just place it in your pocket. Using the built-in gyroscope, the app will identify the position of the device in your pocket and lock it.
#9. Double Tap Your Screen (Android 4.0+)With this non-root take on the double-tap method, you will have the option to designate an activation area on your screen that can toggle the display off from within any application or screen.
There could technically be a #10 right now, but I assume you're all to smart for me to mention just going into the settings and using the time-out feature to automatically turn the screen off after a set interval.Want to get more out of your volume buttons? They can do much, much more than just raise and lower volume levels. Check out my other guide, "9 Alternative Uses for Your Android's Volume Keys," to see for yourself.Make sure to follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

How To: Switch Apps on the HTC One Like a Speed Demon Without a Multitask Button to Press

How To: Switch Apps on the HTC One Like a Speed Demon Without a Multitask Button to Press
There's no shortage of reasons to love the One, yet a feature curiously omitted from the device, much to the chagrin of power users, is a multitasking button. Most Android devices, in addition to 'home' and 'back' keys, have a 'multitasking' key which opens a task switcher and allows the user to quickly switch between apps. The One, however, forgoes the multitasking key allocating the task switcher to a double tap of the home key.One solution to avoid the cumbersome double tap is to convert the HTC logo into a 3rd button, but there's actually a faster gesture that you can enable with this softMod. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download Loopr from Play StoreGive Loopr - Task Switcher an install from the Play Store; it won't cost you a thing. Opening the app will take you to a tour outlining features. Swipe through it or hit home to skip it. Either way, you're going to need to set it up.

Step 2: Enable LooprLoopr will appear in your notifications, though you won't see it unless you pull the drop down menu. Go ahead and do that then tap the app to get to the set up screen. Make sure the box next to Service is checked. If you ever decide to stop using Loopr, tick this box again to disable the app.

Step 3: Edit 'Trigger'Loopr works by launching its own task switcher whenever you enact a gesture by dragging your finger or thumb from either edge of the screen. Tap Edit trigger to set this up.You'll see a bar that measures sensitivity as well as two sets of adjustable brackets at each edge of the screen. You can increase the of effect for either set of brackets in addition to the location of the gesture by dragging the brackets around. You can also turn the gesture on or off entirely by tapping the center where you'll see a toggle that reads 'on'.I find it's best to leave the gestures near the default location around the bottom center edge of the screen where your thumb will rest naturally. But feel free to tinker. I did find that I had to turn the sensitivity up before I was able to open the switcher successfully.

Step 4: Set DelayMany apps, such as Gmail, have navigation drawers that can be accessed by dragging from the left edge of the screen. This could interfere with the Loopr gesture. You could offset this by setting up a delay for the trigger in the Loopr launch menu.A 1/4 second delay worked for me and is still pretty fast, but you could set up a delay as long as one second of having to hold the gesture before the task switcher appears. Alternatively, you could disable the trigger on the left side using the method discussed above, or you could intentionally avoid your set trigger zone when you need to.

Step 5: Switch Tasks Like a ChampionWith everything set up the way you need it to be, launch the Loopr's task switcher anytime by using the gestures you've set. You'll see a radial semicircle of your five most recent apps. Simple, quick, and sleeker than HTC's card like app switcher. If you want to see even more, drag up to the plus sign with the radial open then back down to view older apps. Drag out to the app and release to launch the app. Just make sure the app icon is highlighted before you release or it won't launch. I overshot a few times while testing. You'll now be switching tasks in milliseconds. Multitasking key not needed.

From any screen, you can now simply expand your notification tray to get quick access to media volume controls. There are buttons for lowering and raising the volume as well as muting it altogether, so you should never be caught off guard by blaring video volumes again.
