How To: New Google Now Launcher Makes Your Old Android Feel Like Its Running Lollipop

How To: New Google Now Launcher Makes Your Old Android Feel Like Its Running Lollipop
These last few months have been a Lollipop lovefest, and I'm not talking about the candy. Android's latest OS has been exalted for its embrace of Material Design, and we've certainly given Lollipop its fair share of coverage as well; check out all its new features and ways to make older devices get some of the new look and feel of Android 5.0.But the much talked-about release just isn't yet available for the vast majority of devices, evidenced by the fact that Lollipop isn't even listed in Google's version reporting. So, in the spirit of giving devices on Jelly Bean and KitKat (Android versions 4.1 to 4.4) some Lollipop-love, today I'll show you a couple of ways to bring the newness to your device.

Step 1: Download Google Now LauncherGoogle Now Launcher's most recent update features Material Design cues and can be downloaded right now from the Google Play Store. After installing, make sure to make it the default launcher. You'll also want to make sure you're on the most recent version of the Google app itself. Keep in mind that until your device is actually running Lollipop, changes will be slight and cosmetic, but definitely noticeable:White background in app drawer Side-menu in Google Now pane for easy access to other accounts and settings White Google Search bar on home screen White App Drawer icon Improved animations (1) New search bar. (2) New app drawer. (3) New side-menu.

Step 2: Add Minima for the Best Looking Material ExperienceTo truly make your device Material, you'll want to download Minima Live Wallpaper by Joko Interactive's Josh Oleksyn. The app provides a bunch of cool Material Design wallpapers that react to scrolling as well as the movement of your device, setting itself apart from the myriad of similar wallpapers and apps that have flooded the market. Select a wallpaper by going to "Theme Manager" and finding the one you want to set. You'll see a bunch of wallpapers that are only available on the Pro version, but the free options should be more than adequate. However, you can purchase Minima Pro Live Wallpaper for $1.99 in the Google Play Store if you want access to the other themes as well as increased configuration settings.

Step 3: Adjust Wallpaper SettingsIn the free version of Minima, you can still adjust some of your wallpaper's settings, including the theme colors as well as quality, tilt, and scrolling options. Open the Minima app and head to "Colors" to change the color of your current theme. You can also adjust how Minima looks and reacts in the "Quality, Tilt & Scroll" section. Here you can change the tilt level, display quality, and scrolling, which makes Minima a pretty expansive wallpaper app. If you are looking for a simple and clean Lollipop-like look, then Google Now Launcher and Minima are two great options to get you there. Are you in on the Material Design craze? How To: Why the LG V30 Is the Only Phone You Should Buy if You Have T-Mobile

How To: Why the LG V30 Is the Only Phone You Should Buy if You Have T-Mobile
If you're in the market for a new smartphone, you'll likely scan spec sheets and read reviews of the top phones, compare display size and technology, RAM amount, and processors. But one factor that is often overlooked is cell reception — and for T-Mobile subscribers, there's only one device that has flagship specs and an exclusive antenna that will actually improve your signal.T-Mobile is currently in third place in terms of subscriber count. For many years, the biggest thing holding it back was coverage. For those in urban areas, coverage was terrific and subscribers enjoyed the fastest (or second fastest) LTE speeds. However, in the rural parts of America, many were forced to use another carrier because they weren't able to get any coverage.Earlier this year, T-Mobile purchased the majority of the 600 MHz radio frequency, which will become the new LTE Band 71. This new frequency will significantly improve coverage in rural areas and even boost signal strength in urban areas where building penetration is an issue. Currently, there is only one phone that has this LTE band, and that phone is the LG V30.Don't Miss: The Difference Between LG's POLED & Samsung's AMOLED Screens

Understanding LTE FrequenciesWhen it comes to wireless carriers, two things are essential to attract new customers and keep old ones: Speed and coverage. Consumers want to have the fastest LTE speed possible when using their new smartphone, and they want that fast coverage everywhere they travel. To achieve the fastest possible speeds, 4G was introduced to the world, a standard defining new technology which was capable of much faster speed than the previous generation. Most wireless carriers decided on LTE, with only Sprint backing WiMax (a slower 4G standard which was better at maintaining speed when the network was congested). However, within a few years, Sprint abandoned the standard for LTE.Verizon and AT&T were the first US carriers to adopt 4G and build their infrastructure on LTE bands that provided the broadest reach and fast data speeds. Both adopted bands using the 700 MHz frequency (Verizon uses Band 13 and AT&T uses Band 17) which provides this balance. Lower frequency offers wider coverage than higher frequency, because as the radio waves travel through different mediums (air, concrete, etc.), less energy is lost. The 700 MHz frequency is the backbone of both Verizon and AT&T and has allowed Verizon to reach 98% coverage and for AT&T to provide 4G LTE to 317 million Americans. Verizon Coverage Map. Image via Verizon

What Band 71 (600 MHz) Means for T-MobileThe main thing to understand with LTE frequencies is that the lower the MHz number, the farther the signal can travel. Higher frequencies are more susceptible to interference from geographical and man-made obstructions like mountainous terrain and concrete buildings. In short, a low-frequency LTE signal is the most desirable band for any carrier looking to improve their coverage. The trouble is, T-Mobile was late to the party and didn't initially use the 700 MHz bands to deploy their 4G LTE. Instead, their primary LTE band used the 1700 MHz frequency (Band 4), which allowed them to achieve fast data speed, but poor coverage in rural areas. Their second primary band (Band 2) was in the 1900 MHz range, which did nothing to help mitigate the problem. T-Mobile was then forced to give $2.3656 billion to purchase a portion of Verizon's 700 MHz frequency which was later used for the new LTE Band 12.However, since they only purchased a portion of Verizon's 700 MHz frequency, they were only able to deploy Band 12 in select markets. Long-term, it wouldn't make good business sense to continue paying a competitor, so T-Mobile aggressively purchased the majority of the 600 MHz frequncy (LTE Band 71) when the FCC auctioned it off earlier this year. For the first time ever, T-Mobile now had some of the most desirable LTE frequencies. LTE Bands of US Wireless Carriers Since winning the auction, T-Mobile has sprinted to deploy Band 71 across the United States, specifically in the areas where their coverage is currently lacking. With this LTE band using the lowest frequency, Band 71 has already improved T-Mobile's coverage. Again, Band 71 will not only be able to help rural areas, but also cities since the lower frequency can better penetrate buildings. T-Mobile Coverage Before & After Band 71 roll out in 2017. Image via T-Mobile T-Mobile is deploying the new LTE Band with equipment from Nokia which also supports 5G (the next advancement for cellular data). T-Mobile plans to use the new frequency for 5G when it is ready for deployment. By using the same towers, T-Mobile will be able to turn on 5G on the 600 MHz frequency with a software update, improving their chance not to be late to the 5G party.Don't Miss: T-Mobile Challenges AT&T on its 5G Plans

But 600 MHz Isn't Perfect…Unfortunately, Band 71 isn't without its share of problems. Right now, T-Mobile is running into issues that will delay nationwide deployment of this frequency. One reason for this is the limited number of technicans trained to climb towers. Without trained technicians, T-Mobile's deployment could be delayed by several years, which could potentially stifle their current growth. As all four major wireless carriers prepare for 5G, fumbling around to improve 4G networks may cause delays with the next generation of cell connectivity. The second problem, which is the biggest issue, is the current occupiers of the 600 MHz frequency. There are 1,130 television stations currently using the 600 MHz frequency that must be moved to a new range, within the same frequency, which was allocated to them by the FCC for television use to free up space for wireless data use (known as repacking). In other words, your local TV stations may be preventing T-Mobile from rolling out Band 71 in your area.On October 10, 2017, T-Mobile partnered with Fox Television Stations to help expedite this process by 16 months. Eleven television stations will go off the air by October 25, 2017, and 132 will repack by January 23, 2018. But for the remaining 987 television stations, the FCC has organized their repacking into ten phases that extend to July 2020. Stations will be given one phase within the next three years, which is their deadline for repacking. Unless T-Mobile can incentivize more companies to repack early, they will be significantly delayed in both their improved 4G network and future 5G network. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks

Why the LG V30 Is So ImportantWhen T-Mobile first purchased the 600 MHz frequency, no smartphone supported the new LTE Band. Since the FCC auction was the first time LTE was allocated for use on this frequency, popular SoC manufacturers, such as Qualcomm, never included support within their modems.Recognizing the change this purchase made, Qualcomm announced that their new Snapdragon X20 LTE modem and RF transceiver would support the new LTE band. This modem is rumored to be included in the next Qualcomm SoC, the Snapdragon 845. However, if history is any indication, Qualcomm won't announce this chipset until early next year, leaving T-Mobile without a device that works on their new network for a significant portion of time.Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced that the X16 LTE modem and RF transceiver (the modem used in this year's Snapdragon 835 SoC) will receive support for the new frequency after all. However, the support required different physical antennas, which hasn't been added to any device this year besides one device from LG and one device from Samsung. Only Snapdragon 835 with specific antennas support Band 71. Image by Greekyranjit/YouTube When the Snapdragon 835's support for Band 71 was announced back in April, many consumers were hoping that the LG device would be the Pixel 2 XL or the LG V30, and the Samsung device would be the Galaxy Note 8. Fast forward to now, each of these phones has been announced and released with the only smartphone supporting Band 71 being the LG V30. Samsung promises a device with support later this year, but there is little chance that will be a flagship phone. For years, Samsung has only released two categories of flagship devices: The Galaxy S series and the Galaxy Note series. Both devices have been released already without Band 71 support. As the Snapdragon 835 chipset is required to obtain support for the 600 MHz frequency, this unannounced smartphone will likely be a mid-range device with a flagship SoC, but full of compromises elsewhere to reduce its pricing. For this reason, the LG V30 is the most important phone for T-Mobile. The Galaxy S8/8+/Note 8 support Band 71. Image via Samsung Until devices with the Snapdragon 845 are released to the public (which typically isn't until April), the only flagship device on T-Mobile supporting Band 71 will continue to be the LG V30. T-Mobile needs this device to show current and future customers that they are working to improve their number one problem: Coverage.Especially for customers in areas where 600 MHz frequency has already been deployed, switching these customers to the LG V30 will go a long way to continue T-Mobile's current hot streak of 18 straight quarters adding one million subscribers. Also, for customers in areas with good coverage already, the improved coverage provided by the lower frequency LTE Band could help them finally overtake AT&T for second place among wireless carriers. The LG V30 is the clear choice for T-Mobile The LG V30 has everything you would want from a smartphone in 2017: Edge-to-edge display, QHD, HDR support, a fantastic camera, the rare headphone jack, and the elusive combination of water resistance and wireless charging. With just these features, we would recommend this phone to any one of our readers on any network. But more importantly, when it comes to T-Mobile, the support for LTE Band 71 places it alonen on a mountain. You will not find any device with the V30's combination of flagship specs and extensive LTE band support right now. And because of this fact, if you are a T-Mobile subscribers, no other phone makes sense to purchase.Don't Miss: All the Latest News, Tips & Tricks for the LG V30Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Everything to Do When You Get a New Phone

How To: Everything to Do When You Get a New Phone
After setting up your phone, there are a number of things you should do immediately before download your favorite apps. Specifically, now that your data is on the device, you need to take steps now to ensure it's both protected and retained. Fortunately, most of these steps are a one-time process. The reason this should be done with your new device is that oftentimes, we will ignore the protection and retention of our data until it is too late. By making these modifications now, you can be sure that for the entire life of your new phone, your data will be both private and accessible by you.

Step 1: Back Up Your Photos & VideosThe first thing any new phone users should do is set up automatic backup of their data. While 99% of the time you may never use it, it takes only one to make you regret not having it. Google automatically backs up a lot of your data (unless you specifically disable the feature during setup), but it doesn't back up everything. Specifically, your photos, videos, and your text messages. For photos and videos, Google does provide an app to automate the process, but it isn't enabled by default. Google Photos will automatically back up any files located in the Camera's main folder (which means any image or video taken with your camera). To enable this, just open up Google Photos and select "Done" on the initial prompt. The default settings will only back up your media when you're on Wi-Fi, but if you have an unlimited cellular data plan, you may want to enable cellular data backup so that your media is backed up immediately. To do that, head to the side menu and choose "Settings." Select "Back up & sync" and enable the toggle for Photos and Videos under the Cellular data backup grouping.

Step 2: Schedule Backups for SMS, MMS & Call HistoryAnother aspect of your data which isn't backed up automatically by Google is your SMS (and MMS) messages and your call history. In order to back these up, you will need the assistance of a third-party app. With SMS Backup & Restore, you can automatically back up your text messages, pictures messages, and your call history. To schedule your first backup, select "Edit Schedule" on the main page. Choose whether you want daily, weekly, or even hourly backups. For the daily and weekly options, the default time will be 1:00 am. Once you chose the frequency, tap "Save." By default, the backup location will be your Google Drive. This is a great option because your data is safe even if your phone becomes compromised. For example, if you lose your phone or if you need to factory reset your phone, local copies are no good as the data is tied to your phone. But with cloud storage, as soon as your sign in, you'll have immediate access to your data again.
Step 3: Disable Location HistoryNow that your data is properly backed up, you'll want to keep your data private. There are a number of default settings enabled that sacrifice your privacy which should to be disabled. One of these options is Location History.Location History keeps a log of your location to provide you personalize ads based on your whereabouts and provide GPS directions to your saved locations (such as your home or workplace). That may be fine for some users, but if you're a privacy-minded individual, you can see how to disable it at the link below.Don't Miss: How to Turn Off Location History on Your Android Device
Step 4: Stop Personalized AdsEvery Android device has something known as an advertising ID which is used to identify your device as you browse the web and use apps. Using this data, Google serves up ads that are specifically targeted at you. You can instructs apps not to use this advertising ID by opting out the program.Besides the advertising ID, Google collects data from a variety of sources, including Chrome and YouTube. It is recommended that you turn off these collections to keep your data private. You can read how to disable all of these options at the following link.Don't Miss: How to Opt Out of Google's Data Collection on Android
Step 5: Review App PermissionsWhether you started your device clean or imported your app information from a previous phone, an important step for any new phone user is to review app permissions. Apps on the Play Store have been known to enable a multitude of permissions that aren't necessary for functionality. Because of the severity of the misuse of this information, this should be done both when first setting up your device and periodically to ensure any new apps aren't stealing your data.Don't Miss: How to Review App Permissions on Android

Step 6: Secure Your Lock ScreenWhen you initially set up your device, Google suggests that you protect your lock screen by enabling one of the many authentication methods. Whether it's biometrics or a password, PIN, or pattern, you should have enabled one of them to keep your device safe.Besides offering anti-theft protection, a lock screen can protect unauthorized individuals from accessing your data as they need to know the authentication method. However, sometimes new users forgo the lock screen, opting for either no lock screen or a swipe up gesture. If this was you, follow these steps to enable an actual lock screen.Enter Settings and select "Security & lock screen" or some other variation of those words (depends on the skin used by your device). Select "Screen Lock" and choose any method besides "Swipe" or "None." Follow the instructions to add this security layer to your device. For the fingerprint scanner, find the "Add fingerprint" option and follow the instructions to scan your fingerprint.

Step 7: Limit How Notifications Are DisplayedOne of the conveniences of Android's lock screen is the ability to read and manage notifications without unlocking your device. Unfortunately, this also leaves us vulnerable to someone else using that same convenience to read our notifications without having to unlock our device. Therefore, we recommend changing the default notification settings. To do so, open Settings and select "Notifications" (or whatever variation is used by your OEM skin). Under the "Lock screen" option (this may be hidden behind a sub-menu which you can access using an icon in the upper-right corner of your display), choose "Hide sensitive only." With this enabled, notifications from apps such as messaging will alert you of a new notification, but won't display the message unless you unlock your phone. After using these suggestions, your data will be both private and recoverable. By doing this immediately, you reduce the risk of losing your data and protect yourself in the event that Google ever became compromised. There are also more security steps you can take which we highlight in our Android Security 101 Collection. Unfortunately, Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite aren't officially available on the Play Store in some of Facebook's biggest markets, like the United States. News: Facebook's Riff App Makes Snapchat Stories (But with Friends)

News: Facebook's Riff App Makes Snapchat Stories (But with Friends)
In the shadow of Facebook's announcement for third-party app development on Messenger, the company has announced the release of a whole new application called Riff, a creative tool for making videos with friends. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Available on the Google Play Store or the iOS App Store.
So What Is Riff? The best way to describe this new app is to compare it to one that most of us are familiar with. Riff is essentially Snapchat's "Stories" feature, only your Facebook friends have the ability to add on to your video. There's no commenting, liking, or up-voting involved, just viewing and contributing.

How Does It Work?As you may have already figured out, it starts off by signing in with your Facebook account. Once you're in, you can look through the featured videos or begin filming your own. Videos cannot be edited or use a multi-shot feature like Vine; they're just a one-time recording that can last up to twenty seconds. As the original creator, you'll have the option to control your video by being able to delete what others add-on.
How Do Your Friends Get Involved?Your buddies will also need to sign into Riff using their Facebook login, after which they'll be able to see your video. Using the plus button, your friends can record reactions or just contribute to the video in any way they want—this is usually done by sticking with the theme of the video's tag. Riff videos posted to Facebook will automatically tag all of the contributors.
Final Thoughts?Facebook's last video app venture, Slingshot—which tried to compete with Snapchat's already-established service—didn't bode so well for the company (it was a complete flop). But hey, when you're as big as Facebook, you can afford to take chances, and I see real potential for Riff. These days, all my friends on Snapchat use the Stories feature, so the ability to respond or contribute to the videos, as Riff allows, makes it a lot more inclusive, fun, and interactive. Only time will tell whether Riff has what it takes to stick around. I'll be using it, but will you give it a try?
