It took many months of cries from all around the internet—and a particularly large groan from an ex-Lifehacker editor-in-chief—but Apple has not only acknowledged the existence of its iMessage problem, it's promising a fix.Update: Apple has finally fixed the issue by creating an iMessage de-registration system—see "Update" section below for details.Seemingly, if you switched from an iPhone to an Android device (or even BlackBerry or Windows Phone), you weren't getting your text messages. Apple's iMessage system all but crippled a user's ability to effectively communicate with their contacts, and in an age where texting trumps calling someone every time—it's totally ridiculous.

How iMessaging WorksWhen switching to a competing mobile platform, but keeping your same number (porting), many former iPhone users noticed a sudden bout of unpopularity. The problem is, when iPhone users enable iMessage for their messaging, they effectively lock themselves in to Apple's proprietary system. This is fine for messaging on an iPhone—everything is routed through Apple's servers rather than through your carrier's network, similar to Hangouts and WhatsApp.When sending iMessages from iOS device to iOS device (or even a Mac), the messages are sent faster, as they going through Apple's servers. When sending from an iOS device to a non-Apple device, those messages go to Apple's servers, and then are routed to carrier data to reach its destination.

The Problem with iMessageReceived messages work in similar fashion; with iMessage enabled, all your messages, from iOS and non-iOS senders alike, are routed through Apple. Herein lies the issue.If you switch to a non-iOS platform, but do not disable iMessage completely—meaning from an iPad, Mac, or other connected Apple device—your messages are still going through Apple's server. Only now, because you switched away from an iOS device, those servers have no idea where to send your message, meaning that you won't receive it. Image via Mashable

Update: Apple's Recommended Fix for This IssueWell, it took about five months, but Apple has finally created a service for de-registering your phone number from its iMessage system. Simply head to their official page and enter your phone number. You'll be sent a verification code—enter that in and your phone number will no longer be associated with iMessage.
Apple's Previoiusly Recommended Fix for This IssueApple's previous surefire solution was a fairly ridiculous one—have your contacts delete you, then re-add you. Or, as Adam Pash did, have your contacts open their Message settings, disable iMessage, send you a text (which will now be routed through SMS), then flip iMessage back on.Again, every contact you have would have to do this.
Other Available "Fixes"Others solutions included resetting your Apple ID password, logging out of Messages and FaceTime on all Apple devices, and removing the abandoned iPhone from your Device Profile—but for these methods to be effective, they needed to be done prior to activating your number on the new device.If you've already switched, sorry. If you traded in your old iPhone when you purchased your new device, then you're even more out of luck.Finally, there's the "wait 90 days" approach, where iMessage will "time out" after 90 days and turn itself off, but that's a mighty long time to be without reliable text messaging service. For most, if not all of us, this is a completely bullshit solution.

The Backlash Against AppleThe more cynical amongst us, myself included, posit that there is no reason for Apple to rush to implement a real fix to this problem. For many, the blame was dealt to their new smartphone. For others, it didn't matter to whom the blame fell, they just needed a working messaging platform, and switched back over to an iOS device.But now, the chorus of "boos" is ringing down hard on Apple, with a class action lawsuit in the works. The suit claims that Apple "failed to disclose that switching to a device other than one running on Apple's iOS operating system would result in the interference" and is based on "contractual interference and unfair competition laws."
Apple's AcknowledgementWhile the company is aware of the issue, and even has a not-so-helpful support page, it wasn't until a seperate iMessage bug surfaced that an official fix was teased by Apple, and reported by Re/code:"We recently fixed a server-side iMessage bug which was causing an issue for some users, and we have an additional bug fix in a future software update," Apple told Re/code in a statement. "For users still experiencing an issue, please contact AppleCare."Well, some news is better than no news, and thankfully these issues should now be totally cleared up with their new deregistering tool online for iMessage. Too bad it too them over 5 months to actually do something about it.

Perhaps it's because laptops are more difficult to steal, but we all know that a thief can and will steal anything.But thankfully, there is a small chance that Dropbox can you help you recover your lost or stolen laptop computer. When you have Dropbox installed on your computer, it automatically turns on at startup and runs in the background (unless you disabled that option). That means if your computer thief turns on your laptop, you might be able to snag his/her IP address.Just log in to your Dropbox account online and click on your name to open up the drop-down menu options. Select Settings and click on the Security tab. There you can see the devices linked to your account. Find the stolen laptop (if it's still there) and hover your mouse over the blue info icon next to Most Recent Activity. How easy is that!Well, it's not exactly as simple as the video makes it out to be. Anyone that has dealt with IP addresses knows that you cannot get an exact location unless you work for the CIA or guest star on "Homeland".But now that you're equipped with the current IP address of that thieving ass, you do have a few more options in recovering your computer.

Track Down the IP AddressOnce you have the IP address in hand, you're going to need to locate the IP signal ASAP. Thieves are like ninjas, they move very quickly and most likely won't be in one spot for too long. There are sites like GeoBytes or Live IP Map that can help give an approximate location using the IP address you obtained from Dropbox.If you are good with maps, most of these sites give the longitude and latitude of the signal, making it a little more accurate. Keep in mind that a smart thief could spoof his or her IP address using a bunch of free hide my IP services.I used my IP address at work with the GeoBytes site and got a pretty accurate location (about 2 miles off), as well as a bunch of other information. While the map doesn't give an exact location like Find My iPhone does, this is a huge help for those of us that do not have any security apps on our laptops.
Call in BackupArmed with the useful information like the city where your laptop is and the longitude and latitude of the signal location, you are going to need some help.Calling the police and giving them this information could make it much easier for them to find the thief. They in turn can call the internet service provider, but this would require a warrant, which would take some time. Unless the IP address the thief used is from his or her house, it would be useless within a few hours.And remember, the police have much bigger things to deal with than locating a lost computer and can and most likely will blow you off. But if they do not, the information you provide can go a long way in helping them snag the punk that stole your computer.
Call the ISP DirectlyIf the 5-0 doesn't want to help you out, you can try and contact the ISP directly. Many of the IP locators mentioned above will give you the name of ISP, like Time Warner or Verizon.You might want to brush up on your social engineering skills first, because you would need to be very very slick to get one of the service agents to give you an exact location of the IP address. But hey, stranger things have happened. Maybe a little smooth talk and flattering, or crying and explaining how you were robbed at gun point could sway them to help you out. But don't, hold your breath.

But like I said, anything can happen.If the culprit doesn't understand how Dropbox is linked to a user account (yours), they could possibly upload their own information to the service by accident.Nevertheless, if they do upload documents or files, those items could reveal some information that could help you find them. A document with a first and last name, bank account information, utility bills, photos, you name it. So cross your fingers, because if this does happen, you are probably the luckiest person on earth.If you have a Windows computer, it might be a good idea to install something like Microsoft SyncToy, which will actually sync folders with Dropbox that remain outside of the main Dropbox folder. That way, they wouldn't even know they were uploading their files to the cloud! Sometimes you need more than just your brain to split the bill at a restaurant or to calculate how much your cable company is ripping you off.If your math skills are shaky like mine, or you just want to make sure you're unequivocally correct with your calculations, you obviously want to use a calculator. While the default calculator on Samsung Galaxy S3 is fine and dandy, it's just so...vanilla. CALCU has twelve great looking themes that can be swapped out in seconds and also features a cool calculation history so you can go back to breakdown the math previously entered. Open the app after installing and let's hop right in and begin calculating.

Choosing Your Calculator ThemesTo change the theme, hit the gear icon embedded in the keyboard to access the app settings. In the themes section, select a color pattern by tapping on its image and it'll automatically be applied.

Tweaking the Calculator SettingsSwiping to the left will move you into the Settings where you can adjust the display. Selecting Full Keyboard layout will add an advanced calculations section above the normal calculator (Normal vs. Full below seen below). Alternatively, this section can be accessed by sliding up on the display while using the normal calculator. And keeping the Thousands separators unchecked will remove the commas from longer strings of digits.

Experimenting with Lab FeaturesAnother swipe to the left in the Settings takes us to the Labs section, where newly implemented tweaks can be tested. Both of these features are somewhat redundant, but cool if you want to add more to the app. Swipe to perform calculation allows you to swipe down on the keyboard to perform the calculation. But since the calculation occurs as soon as it is input, this is more of a visual thing than an actual benefit.Swipe to clear, as the name implies, clears the screen back to zero with a quick swipe in the display area (where the calculation is performed). Again, you can clear the screen by pressing C on the keyboard, but who doesn't love options?

Swiping for History & Advanced FeaturesYou can access your calculation history by swiping up at anytime, as shown on the left below. This will bring up your recent calculations and can be cleared by hitting the the staggered lines in the bottom left. And as stated earlier, swiping from the bottom while in normal mode will bring up the advanced calculations, as shown on the right above.

Adding Keys to Your CalculatorLastly, you can add operators and constants to the keyboard itself. By swiping up once in full screen mode and swiping up twice in normal mode, you will bring up the additional keys. Tap on the + icon to bring up the tiny menu where you can choose between Operator and Constant. Once you are satisfied with the added keys, hit done and the changes will be saved. If you are unhappy with those additions, the calculator can be reset back to stock using the RESET key. Doing calculations is super fast as well. Entering in actions like 6 + 6 will automatically update without the need to hit the equal sign, which makes doing long calculations much faster.
