How To: Create a Gamertag in Google Play Games
Android's Google Play Games app has let you track your feats and accomplishments in the games you play for quite a while now, but for some, the immersion experience might be broken after you finish dominating a game only to see your regular-ass name from your Google account on the leaderboard.Don't Miss: How to Record Gameplay in Google Play Games Most (if not all) other online gaming experiences let you create your own gamertag to use. It's just more fun to imagine that "ProfessorX-RayCharles" got the game-winning kill, or set a new high score, etc. Whatever it was, it was probably something that a dipshit named "Eric Ramsley" wouldn't have been able to do in real life. Unless someone's working on a game called "Blog Post Simulator" (if it turns out someone is working on that game, the creator should kindly direct his or her attention here—you'll need it).Where was I? Oh, right. In late-February, Google Play Games has given users the opportunity to create an official Gamer ID. It's still tied to your regular Google account, so you won't need to create a new one.

How to Create a Gamer IDJust open up the Google Play Games app on your device, and you should see your current ID—whichever Google account you use to sign into Google Play Games—at the top of the screen. Just tap on this, and on the next screen you should see an edit button in the top right that looks like a pencil. You'll be prompted with a screen that asks if you'd like to create a Gamer ID; tap Next, and you'll be able to enter whichever tag you like. Keep in mind, the IDs are unique, so you'll have to add some numbers or change the spelling if someone's already taken your choice. After you pick a name, you can decide whether your ID is public or private, and if you want other users to be able to associate your ID with your email address and real name. You'll also have a choice of more than 40 avatars to use as your profile picture.Once you're done with all that, get playing and see how far up the leaderboards you can make it. To change your Gamer ID or avatar, simply repeat the process.

How To: Access & Control Your Computer Remotely with Your Nexus 5

How To: Access & Control Your Computer Remotely with Your Nexus 5
With popular remote desktop app LogMeIn recently ending its free service, lots of Android users have begun looking for alternatives. There are some good ones out there like TeamViewer and Microsoft Remote Desktop, but today, Google released an app that makes a pretty good contender. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Pairing with an app for its popular desktop web browser, Google's Chrome Remote Desktop Android client lets you access and control your Linux, Mac, or Windows PC from afar.
What You'll NeedChrome Desktop Browser An internet connection for both devices

Step 1: Install Chrome Remote Desktop on Your ComputerFirst, you'll need to install an app for Chrome on your computer. Head over to the Chrome Web Store to get it installed. Note: As Peter pointed out in the comments, Linux systems will only be allowed to use the remote assistance feature. Currently, Chrome Remote Desktop can:Provide remote assistance to Windows, Mac and Linux users, or access your Windows (XP and above) and Mac (OS X 10.6 and above) desktops at any time.

Step 2: Authorize Chrome Remote DesktopIn order for Chrome Remote Desktop to display your computer's entire screen, you'll need to grant it full access to your PC. Once you've installed and launched Chrome Remote Desktop, you'll be greeted by a dialog box telling you just that. Click Continue from here. Next, you'll be given a list of permissions that the app will be granted. Click Accept to continue.

Step 3: Enable Remote ConnectionsTo allow your Nexus 5 to connect to your computer, you'll need to configure one more setting here. In the box labeled My Computers, click the Enable Remote Connections next to the computer you wish to access remotely. Now you'll be asked to enter a PIN that will be used to access this computer. Pick a 6 digit number that you will remember, and enter it in both fields. At this point, the computer side of things are all set up. The next steps will be done from your Nexus 5.

Step 4: Install Chrome Remote Desktop on Your Nexus 5From the Google Play app on your Nexus 5, search Chrome Remote Desktop and install the app. Alternatively, you can point your Nexus 5's web browser to this link.

Step 5: Enter the PIN That You Chose EarlierWhen you open the app, you'll be greeted with a list of computers that you have set up. Tap the one that you wish to control remotely, and it will ask for the PIN you chose earlier. If you don't want to be asked to type in a PIN every time you connect to this computer, tick the box next to Don't ask for PIN again.

Controlling Your Computer RemotelyNavigating your computer from your Nexus 5 is simple. Just drag the mouse pointer around by sliding your finger across the screen. To zoom in on a particular section of your computer's screen, simply pinch in or out with two fingers like you would in many other Android apps. To type, simply tap a text field with the mouse pointer, then hit the keyboard icon near the top of the screen. The three-dot menu button at the top right can simulate pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL on your PC to access an advanced menu, or allow you to close the connection. On a good connection, this app is amazing. I'm not trying to sucker you, it really is fast and responsive, and gives you full access to your computer. Now you have full access to your PC, right from your Nexus 5. I guess we're running out of excuses for not working...

How To: Clean Up Android's Cluttered Share Menu

How To: Clean Up Android's Cluttered Share Menu
The share menu is a vital part of Android that lets you send data between between apps. Many of your favorite apps support the feature, including the new Direct Share sub-menu, which can lead to a messy share menu. However, there are a number of tools to clean up this clutter, three of which don't require root. With an organized share menu, you'll easily be able to send a picture, link, or file from one app to another without spending time looking through a list. We organized our list of tips based on both ease of use and how much it alters the share menu, with the simplest method at the top. Check out each one, and decide which method best fits your needs.Don't Miss: Android Basics — How to Use the Share Menu

Method 1: Pin Items to the TopFirst introduced in 6.0 Marshmallow, Android now includes the ability to pin the most used items in both your Direct Share menu and regular share menu to help ease the process of locating them. To pin an item, long-press it in the share menu choose the "Pin" option.Pinned items will be listed alphabetically by app name. While this solution is limited in customization options, it is the easiest to execute and does assist in undoing the clutter.More Info: How to Pin Items in Your Direct Share & Regular Share Menu

Method 2: Reorganize the Share Menu with AppChooserAnother way to enjoy a more organized share menu is to replace it with an app called AppChooser. AppChooser changes the look of the Android's share menu from rows of apps to a list, which you can edit.Install AppChooser for free from the Google Play Store When you install AppChooser, there will not be an option to open the app on its Play Store page. Instead, to launch it, you need to share an item. When selecting the share button (or option), a prompt will appear asking you if you wish to use Android System or AppChooser. Choose the latter to open the app. By default, the app will list every item in the share menu in alphabetical order. However, you can modify this. By selecting "a>z" button located in the bottom left corner of the display, you can use the pop-up menu to alter the order. The list can only be sorted from A to Z or Z to A. However, you can alter the list to also account for app usage. By selecting "Frequency," the list will show the most used apps on the top. "History" will place the last used app on the top of the list. With either option, the remaining portion of this list will be shown in the specified order, either A to Z or Z to A.You can long press an item to hide it from the list. There is a pro version available, which will increase the number of apps to three rows. Unfortunately, support ended in 2012, so don't expect any bug fixes or an updated UI (which uses design language from Android 2.3 Gingerbread).

Method 3: Replace the Share Menu with Fliktu (Or Andmade Share)My favorite option is Fliktu. Fliktu replaces the share menu with its own list. However, unlike any of the other methods, Fliktu also lets you use gestures to call up the share menu in relevant situations.Install Fliktu for free from the Google Play Store Fliktu reworks the UI to a three-item row behind a transparent background. Under the Menu tab of the app, you can customize the layout of its share menu. The top row can be manually set or determined based on frequency of use. You can also hide specific apps so they don't appear on the share menu. Fliktu also lets you use gestures to open this menu after selecting a link. Select the checkbox for "Enable Fliktu for Links" under the Links tab. Then, whenever you select a hyperlink, with a flick or shake of your phone, Fliktu will open instead of the browser. Once there, you can quickly share the link with an app.Similar functionality is extended to copied texts. After selecting the checkbox under the tab Clipboard, whenever you copy text, you can flick or shake your phone to open Fliktu to share the text with another app or person easily. With both features, you have only a few seconds to perform the gesture. Similar to AppChooser, this app isn't updated frequently. While the developer still supports it, it is a "side project" for him. The last update was in 2015, so like with our previous version, don't expect any bug fixes, UI changes, or new features anytime soon.Another option is Andmade Share which is similar to Fliktu without the gestures. It includes the ability to share with multiple apps simultaneously and allows for reorganization by long-pressing an item and dragging it up and down its list. However, it's not the prettiest UI, and support stopped in 2013. Additionally, it doesn't appear to work on Android Oreo.

Method 4: CustomShare Xposed Module (Root Required)Finally, there is an Xposed module called CustomShare. As with any Xposed module, you will need a rooted device and the Xposed Framework installed. Head to the link below for more information on how to install Xposed on your phone.Don't Miss: How to Install the Xposed Framework Once you have Xposed installed, search for CustomShare under "Download" and install the latest version. From there, you'll find the app in your app drawer. What's special about this one is it lets you change your phone's existing share menu instead of replacing it. CustomShare lets you remove up to 9 apps from the menu for free, but by purchasing CustomShare-Donator, you can gain the ability to remove as many as you'd like.More Info: How to Use CustomShare to Declutter Your Share Menu Any of the options above will help organize the mess known as the share menu. Depending on your preferences and needs, there is a different option that helps share your items quickly and effectively. Which method did you opt for? Let us know in the comments below.Don't Miss: 3 Ways to Remove Facebook if It Came Preinstalled on Your Android Phone - No Root RequiredFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Fix the Stuck Gray Apple Logo and Blue or Black Screen of Death on Your iPhone

How To: Fix the Stuck Gray Apple Logo and Blue or Black Screen of Death on Your iPhone

We've all seen the blue screen of death at least one time in our lives. Image via hackspc.com I grew up using a Windows PC about the size of a small refrigerator and that damn screen popped up at least once a day. Thankfully, errors like these happen much less often, but now that our smartphones have basically become pocket PCs, these type of errors can and do happen.I've had my iPhone 4 for about two years now and have rarely run into any problems. But a few weeks ago, my phone got stuck on the apple load screen, and I had no idea what to do. I cried a little, then looked for a fix.Check out this poor guy below. His phone goes black during charge. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Skip to around 1:20 to see what I mean.Luckily, I wasn't the only one having problems like this. And even better, there is one simple fix to address all of the following issues.
Major IssuesiPhone restarts after reaching Blue Screen of Death iPhone stays stuck on the Apple logo Endless spinning gear during boot Black Screen of Death (phone is recognized by computer, but is inoperable)

The FixFor all of the above issues, there's a very simple fix. For those that have jailbroken their iPhone before, this process should be very familiar.Put your iPhone in DFU mode. You can place any iDevice in DFU mode by opening up iTunes and connecting your device to your computer with its cable. Once connected, press and hold the Sleep button and the Home button simultaneously on your device. After about ten seconds, let go of the Sleep button BUT continue to hold the Home button. Soon, you will see a message pop-up in iTunes that looks like this: This short video will also guide you through the process: Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
From here, you can either restore your iPhone and set it up like new (an option for those with recurring system issues) or simply restore from a previous backup (I hope you have one!)Now, if this does not solve your problems, you may have an actual hardware issue which may require you to go to an Apple Store and check it out.Hope this guide helped you guys out, and if you have any more tips or tricks for saving iPhones and whatnot, let us know in the comments.Original photo from Digital Trends

How To: Stream Games from Your Windows PC to Your iPhone
The greatest pain in owning a high-powered gaming PC is the simple fact that you can't play it all the time. Sometimes you have work or school, and other times, you may just want to go mobile. When something like this impedes your ability to play PC games, you may end up settling for mobile games. What if, instead of doing that, you were able to play your PC games from your iPhone?Let me introduce KinoConsole, a free app that lets you stream games from your Windows PC to your iPhone in HD. It's a little tricky to set up, but once you get the hang of it, streaming your favorite games will be a breeze. The only limitation is that your devices need to be on the same network. After you set everything up, you'll enjoy buttery smooth gameplay being broadcasted to your iPhone from your PC all the way in the next room. If that doesn't scream "the future is now," nothing does.
Step 1: Install Kinoni StreamerFirst, let me clear up some confusion with the naming scheme for this suite of apps. On Windows it's called Kinoni Streamer, and on mobile it's called KinoConsole. Kinoni themselves don't always stick with this naming convention either, so don't get to hung up on it.To start, download Kinoni Streamer on your PC, then launch the EXE file and follow the prompts to get the Windows portion of the software suite installed.

Step 2: Set a PasswordOnce you install Kinoni Streamer, the first thing you should do is set a password. This will allow you to give your phone access to your PC when you use it to play games. This added level of security is much appreciated, as it stops just anybody from being able to gain access to your games. To do so, open the Kinoni Streamer app on your PC and make sure the Connection tab is selected. From there, enter a password in the Password field, then confirm your password by entering it again in the Re-type Password field. Finally, click "OK" to save your password.

Step 3: Add Your Favorite GamesThis step is probably the most complicated one, so pay attention. Head over to the Quick Launch tab in Kinoni Streamer's main menu to begin. Here, you'll need to choose which games can be streamed to your iPhone.Click "Browse," bringing up Windows Explorer. You'll need to manually select each game, and sometimes they're located in drastically different places. I'll walk you through finding your Steam games, as that's the most popular place for people to play games. If you're looking for the application folder for a non-Steam game, your best bet would be to Google "<game name> file location Windows." Go to the hard drive where your Steam Games are (probably your C:\ drive). Next, click on the "SteamLibrary" folder, then "steamapps," and finally "common." Inside the "common" folder, you'll see all the Steam games that are in your Library.Double-click on a folder to open it, and find the application. You'll know it's the application itself as its "type" is displayed as "Application" in Windows Explorer, and it's the only file in the folder with the game's icon. If there are two files that show the game's icon, one is likely not an "Application." Once you've clicked on the application file, click "Open" in the bottom-right corner. After that, repeat this same process for any other games you'd like to stream to your iPhone. Once you get a few games loaded in the Quick Launch tab, click "OK" in the bottom-right corner. This will close out the application window on your computer, but it'll keep running in the background.

Step 4: Install KinoConsole on Your iPhoneNext, you'll need to install the KinoConsole app on your iPhone. To do that, either search for "KinoConsole" on the App Store, or just use this link to jump directly to it. Tap on "Get" to download and install it (you may need to use Touch ID or Face ID to continue), then open it up.

Step 5: Enter Your PasswordNext, make sure your iPhone is connected to the same local network as your PC. When you open up KinoConsole, your computer's name should show up, and it'll have a padlock on it. This indicates that you need to enter in the password that you set up on your PC in Step 2, so tap on the padlock and enter your password.

Step 6: Play a GameYour games should appear on the main screen now, and they should be the exact same ones you added via Kinoni Streamer in Step 3. If you tap on a game, it'll be launched on your computer, which then gets mirrored to your iPhone via KinoConsole. Before you run off, though, read the rest of the article to learn the in-game control system.

Step 7: Learn the in-Game MenuOnce you launch a game, slide out from the left side of the screen to open the in-game menu. Each of the four options here are integral to your gaming experience, so don't shy away from testing each one thoroughly.

Option 1: Mouse ModeThe first button in the slide-out in-game menu is "Mouse mode," which toggles between two options. The first option is enabled by default, and it lets you use your finger to drag items. The second option doesn't have any clear applications, but it seemed to do the trick when the first one was behaving incorrectly. The first option displays a circle around the mouse pointer, while the second one does not.

Option 2: Keyboard ModeWhile using a virtual keyboard isn't the best way to play games, typing can be important in games for communication or for logging in. When you hit a snag, tap on the keyboard icon in the in-game menu to bring up your keyboard. Exit keyboard mode by tapping the icon again.

Option 3: Edit Game ControlsUnlike other solutions and games, KinoConsole has no on-screen controls by default. While this may seem like a hassle at first, it's actually liberating to only use the controls you need. Instead of superimposing an Xbox controller onto the screen, you get to mix and match which controls you need for any given game.KinoConsole, in-turn, saves each configuration on a per-game basis — so don't worry about needing to reconfigure each game every time. You're also free to connect your own Bluetooth controller if you'd like. KincoConsole has full support for them.Tap the third option (the wrench icon) in the in-app menu to get into edit mode. You know that you're in edit mode because a red rectangle will frame the screen. Add a new control by long-pressing where you want to add it. A menu will appear, where you get to choose exactly which control you want to add. The scheme and naming conventions mirror the Xbox 360 and Xbox One style, so the "A" button would be located in the bottom-middle on the right side. Of course, you can put it anywhere you want, but the game will act like it's located there. You can move around a control by dragging it — while you're still in edit mode, of course. You can also modify or remove a control. First long-press it to bring up two icons: Arrows and an "X." If you tap on the "X," the control will be deleted. Tap on the arrows to resize the control or change opacity. Resize the control by pinching (like making a picture larger), and change the opacity by performing a rotating gesture (like you're turning a radio knob). When you're done, swipe from the left again and tap on the wrench icon to stop editing the controls. Then, you can use the controls you created to navigate the game.

Option 4: Close the GameThe fourth option, which looks like a power button, fittingly closes the game, bringing you back to the "Games" page in KincoConsole. And there you have it. Now you won't need to be near your gaming PC in order to take advantage of all that it has to offer. What have you been playing via KinoConsole? Have you enjoyed your seamless 720p streaming? How To: Root Your Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge (US Models)

How To: Root Your Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge (US Models)
The international, Exynos-powered Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have had a working root method ever since a few days after release. But the North American variants—those using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 processor—have locked bootloaders, and have proven to be almost unrootable up until now.Don't Miss: How to Root Exynos Variants of the Galaxy S7 & S7 EdgeDeveloper br3w3r has stepped in to claim a root bounty worth nearly $2,000, and as a result of his work, SD820 versions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge can now be rooted. The process adds an extra step or two to traditional root methods since it relies on an engineering boot image, but those of us with AT&T and T-Mobile versions of the phone can finally step up to Superuser status.
Before You BeginFirst up, be aware that this root method is in its early stages of development, so there are a few bugs and quirks. As a result of these issues, we recommend that you only try this if you are comfortable with restoring the stock firmware on your device.Don't Miss: How to Restore the Stock Firmware on a Galaxy DeviceWorking on AT&T and T-Mobile. May work on Sprint. Do NOT try on Verizon variants yet.Secondly, this root method will require that you perform a factory reset on your device, so make sure to back up all important data before you get started.Beyond that, users have reported that this method does not trip the KNOX counter on the device, however it does cause Samsung Pay to stop working, which might be a deal breaker for some of you. Finally, this root method could theoretically work on all SD820 variants of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, but we have only confirmed it for the AT&T and T-Mobile ones. The Sprint variants have had mixed results, though you can refer to this XDA thread for workarounds for the issues it causes. As for Verizon Wireless users, we urge you to hold off on trying it out until a more stable root is available. If you are comfortable with these disclaimers, proceed at your own risk, but please be sure to read through the entire process before you take any steps to root your device.
RequirementsAT&T or T-Mobile Galaxy S7 or S7 edge (model numbers G930A, G935A, G903T, and G935T) with Snapdragon processor Windows PC USB data cable If you want to double check that you do have a Snapdragon processor, you can use a simple app to verify.
Step 1: Download Files to Your PCTo get started, there are two files you'll need to download to your PC. The first is an engineering boot image leaked from Samsung, which is what will make rooting possible later. Make sure to download the right engineering boot image for your particular model number.Download the engineering boot image for Galaxy S7 G930 models Download the engineering boot image for Galaxy S7 edge G935 models The second file is a modified version of Odin, the firmware-flashing tool for Windows, which was altered to enable the flashing of engineering boot images.Download the modified version of Odin

Step 2: Put Phone into Download Mode, Connect to PCNext, power your Galaxy completely off. When the screen goes black, press and hold the power, home, and volume down buttons. This will take you to Samsung's "Download mode" menu, where you'll need to press the volume up button to verify your choice. Once you've done that, plug your phone into your PC with a USB data cable. The button combination for entering Download mode.

Step 3: Flash Engineering Boot Image with OdinBack on your PC now, extract the ModifiedODIN.zip file that you downloaded in Step 1. From here, right-click the OdinPrinceComsy.exe file, then choose "Run as administrator." Next, from Odin's main menu, click the "AP" button in the middle of the screen. From here, use the file browser menu to select the G93xEngineeringBoot.tar file that you downloaded earlier. At this point, just wait a few seconds until the Log tab shows a message that says "Leave CS." Once that happens, click the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen to flash the engineering boot image. The process shouldn't take very long, and when it's done, your phone will automatically reboot. When the phone reboots, you can disconnect the USB data cable.
Step 4: Perform a Factory ResetThis part's a little hard to stomach, but it's in your best interest. You could potentially get away without factory resetting your device, but the vast majority of users that didn't wipe all data have reported issues. So you could skip this step and see if it works for you, but you'll probably end up wasting a lot of time if you don't perform a full wipe. After flashing the engineering boot image with Odin, your phone will have automatically rebooted. If it successfully booted back into Android, simply power the phone off to begin. Then, when the screen goes black, press and hold the home, power, and volume up buttons to enter recovery mode. However, if your phone is stuck in a bootloop at this point, you'll have to try a different button combination. First, press and hold the power and volume down buttons simultaneously to force a reboot. Then, immediately after the screen goes black, press and hold the home, power, and volume up buttons, and you'll be taken to recovery mode. From here, use the volume buttons to highlight the "Wipe data/factory reset" option, then press the power button to select it. Next, highlight the "Yes" option, then select it to perform a factory reset. When you're done here, reboot your phone by selecting the "Reboot system now" option. This first boot will take longer than usual, so give your phone 10-15 minutes to finish booting up.
Step 5: Run Through the Initial SetupOnce you've rebooted, you'll be greeted by Android's initial setup guide. Go ahead and log in with your Google account, then finalize the setup. There's an outside chance that you may need to perform another factory reset later in the process, so you shouldn't bother with restoring apps and things of that nature just yet.

Step 6: Install ADB on Your PC, Enable USB Debugging on Your PhoneNow that you've successfully installed the engineering boot image and got Android back up and running, your phone is ready to be rooted. For this part, you'll need to install ADB on your computer, then enable USB debugging on your phone.Once you've taken care of that, connect your phone to your computer again, at which point you should see a message on your phone asking if you'd like to allow access from this computer. Tick the box next to "Always allow" on this popup, then press "OK."

Step 7: Download & Extract the Root FilesNext, you'll need to download the files that will actually root your device onto your computer, which you can snag below.Download the SuperSU root files Once you've done that, extract the contents of the ZIP, then copy them over to the platform-tools folder in your ADB installation directory. For most users, this folder will be located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools.

Step 8: Root Your DeviceOnce you've copied the files, hold down the shift button on your keyboard, then right-click any empty space in this folder. From here, choose "Open command window here." Next, simply type root.bat into the command prompt, then press enter. You'll see quite a bit of text scrolling by as the utility roots your device, and at this point, you'll almost be ready to go.
Step 9: RebootThe root script should automatically reboot your phone when it's done, but if not, go ahead and reboot manually to finalize your work. If your device gets stuck in a bootloop at this point, you'll have to perform another factory reset, so refer back to Step 4 for instructions on that. Beyond that, it's safe to disconnect your phone from your computer at this point.

Step 10: Verify RootWhen you get back up, your device should be fully rooted. To verify this, download an app called Root Checker from developer joeykrim.Install Root Checker for free from the Google Play Store Once you've installed the app, simply open it up and tap "Verify Root." From here, tap "Grant" when prompted to give the app Superuser access, and if everything went off without a hitch, you'll see a message saying "Congratulations! Root access is properly installed on this device!"
Notes & Troubleshooting TipsAs I mentioned at the beginning, this root method has a few quirks. For starters, you should not update the Superuser binaries, even if prompted by the SuperSU app. This is because the new binaries might not be compatible with this root method. On top of that, most users have reported that Wi-Fi credentials are lost upon rebooting. If you encounter this issue, install BuildProp Editor by JRummy, then change the ro.securestorage.support=true line to ro.securestorage.support=false.Then finally, T-Mobile users will probably notice a new RCS icon in their status bar that looks a bit like a thunder cloud. If you'd like to disable this icon, you can try flashing this ZIP with FlashFire.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

News: 30+ New iOS 12.2 Features for iPhone You Don't Want to Miss

News: 30+ New iOS 12.2 Features for iPhone You Don't Want to Miss
A few months ago, iOS 12.1 came out with a handful of useful new features, and iOS 12.2 goes even further. While some of iOS 12.2's new features for iPhone are much welcomed, there are some that we'd be better without.Apple's iOS 12.2 started beta testing on Jan. 4, 2019, and became a stable release to download on any iOS device less than three months later on March 25, just after Apple's special event that introduced a slew of new services. The Apple News+ subscription is available now, while Apple TV Channels will appear in May; Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ this fall; and the Apple Card credit card partnered with Goldman Sachs and MasterCard this summer. While most of these services aren't available yet, everything else below you can use right away.

1. There's the New Apple News+ Subscription ServiceWhen you subscribe to Apple News+, Apple's new magazine subscription service will cost you $9.99 per month, and you can access your digital magazines from the new "News+" tab in the middle. The subscription option includes magazines from over 300 sources including:The Atlantic, Better Homes & Gardens, Bon Appétit, Condé Nast Traveler, ELLE, Entertainment Weekly, ESPN The Magazine, Esquire, Food & Wine, Good Housekeeping, GQ, Health, InStyle, Martha Stewart Living, National Geographic, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, O, The Oprah Magazine, Parents, People, Real Simple, Rolling Stone, Runner's World, Sports Illustrated, TIME, Travel + Leisure, Vanity Fair, Vogue, WIRED, and Woman's DayThere is also access to online newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and Toronto Star, as well as "premium online publications" including theSkimm; The Highlight by Vox; New York Magazine's sites Vulture, The Cut, and Grub Street; and Extra Crunch from Verizon Media's TechCrunch.Don't Miss: Cancel the Apple News+ Auto-Renewal Before Your Trial Ends

2. There Are New Animoji to Play WithIf you have an iPhone X, XS, XS Max, or XR, there are four new Animoji characters to use in Messages and FaceTime, bringing the total number of Animoji to 24, not including customizable Memoji. The new animated AR emoji characters include a giraffe, shark, boar, and owl.Don't Miss: How to Use Animoji & Memoji in FaceTime Video Calls

3. You Can View Air Quality in Apple MapsWhenever you view a city or town in Apple Maps in iOS 12.2, you can see the AQI for the area. The AQI, or air quality index, is a set of numbers and colors that describe how clean or polluted the air is. Apple added AQI data to the Weather app in iOS 12.0, but it's just now making it to Maps.Whenever you can see the current weather in the bottom right of a map, you'll be able to see the AQI value — from 0 to 500, least to most polluted — and its associated color right beneath it. However, it's opt-in, so you need to toggle the setting on before it will work. Check out our guide to see how and to see what all the values mean.Full Guide: How to View Air Quality in Apple Maps to Avoid Pollution

4. You Can Toggle Off Weather Forecasts in MapsBefore the introduction of AQI values in Apple Maps, you were stuck with viewing the current weather for an area viewed on the screen. But since its addition, there's a new section in the Maps settings that lets you toggle off the bottom-right weather conditions icon. I've never found the weather information annoying or unuseful in Maps, but if you have, you now have the option to get rid of it. If you only care about the AQI conditions, you can keep that visible.
5. There's Hey Siri Support for the New AirPodsThere's a new AirPods setup screen that includes "Hey Siri," which is for the new second-generation AirPods releasing on March 26. If you want to use Siri hands-free on AirPods, you'll need the new ones, though you can still use Siri on the first-gens.Preorder on Amazon: AirPods with Wireless Charging Case ($199)
6. You Can Use Siri to Play Videos on Apple TVNew to Siri, in general, is the ability to ask your iPhone to play "any video, show, movie, sports game, or channel" on your Apple TV. An example given by Apple is to say, "Hey Siri, play Free Solo on my TV."

7. Siri Has Inline Music Playback FinallyBefore, whenever you asked Siri to play something in the Music app, it'd do it, but all that would come up on the Siri screen would be a huge "Open Music" button. Now, you get the Now Playing widget so you can skip tracks right away if need be without opening Music or using the Control Center or Notifications Center widget. Playing music with Siri in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

8. Device Details Are More OrganizedA tiny yet welcomed feature is a reorganized "About" screen in the "General" settings. Now, instead of just having your device's name by itself, it's joined by the software version, model name, model number, and serial number. All of those were available before in the big section of information, except the model name that shows "iPhone XS Max" or whatever type it is, which is completely new here.Storage information also has its own section now, and there's a new section for your "Limited Warranty" or "AppleCare+" if you have one. The "About" page (left) and after (right) the update.

9. You Can Customize Your Downtime Each DayBefore, you could only set Screen Time's "Downtime" feature for a specific amount of time for every day, but in iOS 12.2, you can choose specific days with specific times for each. You can even turn it off for some days and on for others.Full Guide: Set Different Downtime Schedules for Each Day of the Week The "Downtime" settings in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

10. And Temporarily Toggle App Limits On or OffSpeaking of Screen Time, if you have "App Limits" set up for your device or a child's device, when you open the "App Limits" option, you'll see a new toggle up top. This lets you turn it on or off temporarily whenever needed.

11. Safari Prevents Sites from Collecting Motion DataThere's a new Safari setting called "Motion & Orientation Access" that's toggled off by default. Previously, web apps had access to accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data, but now it's opt-in because it could be used "data for tracking, analytics-gathering, and audience recognition," according to The Verge. This may prevent virtual reality and augmented reality content on websites from working correctly, though Apple's AR Quick Look feature seemed to be working properly without it. However, when visiting Apple's Experience iPhone website, it was clear that motion data was being blocked with the toggle off. With the setting off (left) vs. with it toggled on (right).

12. Searching Is Easier in Safari with ArrowsWhen performing a web search in Safari, there are now blur arrows next to suggested searches that appear under the search bar. Tapping on an arrow will autofill that suggestion into the search bar, but it won't take you there automatically. You can still tap on the actual words next to the arrow to open that search up right away, but the arrow helps narrow your search down and get other recommendations.

13. Safari Shames Unsecured Websites Even MoreSafari would already warn you if a site's certificate is expired or illegitimate, and it would also notify you when a site was not secure during a login or checkout process. Now, Safari shames websites even more for not implementing HTTPS, an application protocol that encrypts data you send to and receive from a site. So whenever you land on a webpage that only uses HTTP, it will say "Not Secure" in the address bar. This also applies to the Safari browser when used inside apps.
14. There's No More 'Do Not Track' OptionWhile the "Do Not Track" option was nothing more than a security blanket for Safari, it was still a way to hope that some websites and advertisers would acknowledge your request to not be tracked when browsing. Apple's finally admitting defeat, essentially saying that it never really mattered to begin with.More Info: Apple's Ditching the 'Do Not Track' Option for Safari in iOS 12.2
15. AutoFill Signs You in Automatically in SafariBefore, when you would use AutoFill for usernames and passwords in Safari, it would just fill in the info but you'd still have to tap "Log In" or "Enter" or whatever to actually sign in. Now, right after you AutoFill the credentials for a website account, it'll log you in right away.

16. There Are More Editorial Highlights in Music's BrowseIn older Music versions, you'd only see a carousel of highlights at the top of the "Browse" tab, but now the whole tab itself is jam-packed full of hot and trending albums, songs, artists, and playlists. "Browse" in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

17. Wallet Received a Streamlined InterfaceApple updated its Wallet app's user interface a little bit in iOS 12.2. It definitely looks sleeker in some aspects, but it's really only visual changes. For instance, when you're viewing a card or pass, instead of seeing your additional cards and passes hidden at the bottom, they're entirely gone (this does not apply to the Wallet shortcut). So now you have to hit "Done" instead of just tapping another card, though, you can also still swipe down on the card to see all cards and passes. When viewing a credit or debit card by itself, any Apple Pay transactions will show up right underneath for a quick lookover. Also, the ellipsis (•••) button has also moved from the bottom to the top, which is where you access more details for the card or pass, and instead of square menu boxes, they're now rounded.

18. Apple Pay Cash Lets You Transfer to Bank InstantlySpeaking of Wallet, your Apple Pay Cash card's look is also revamped. When accessing the card, you still see your last transaction, but you also see all transactions for the last year, in some cases. Additionally, Apple states that you can now transfer money to your bank account instantly using your Visa debit card. Before, it could take days.

19. There's a Color Picker KeyboardOne of the more interesting additions is a color-based keyboard, a move that benefits developers more than anyone else. The keyboard color picker layout can only be accessed using an HTML5 color picker tool online right now, activated with the input type="color" element. Only simple colors appear in standard hexadecimal format, so RGB alpha colors, which appear in different opacities, won't work.It looks almost exactly like the color picker tool in the Notes app and the Markup tool in Photos, Mail, et. al., only it's its own keyboard, not a pop-up selector. You can test it out at W3Schools' HTML5 Color Picker or on Mozilla's tool. The color picker in Apple apps (left) vs. the new color keyboard (right).
20. New Third-Party TVs Get AirPlay 2 & HomeKit SupportApple announced at the beginning of the year that third-party TVs from manufacturers such as Sony, LG, and Vizio will be getting AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support. Samsung's TVs will also get AirPlay 2 functionality but is opting to include the iTunes Movies and TV Shows app instead of having HomeKit support. The update has shown signs of this support, where TV options show up in the Home app, such as a new "Allow Speaker & TV Access" to choose exactly who can view and send content to AirPlay 2 devices. Before, it just said "Allow Speaker Access." Hidden controls were also found for including TVs into home automation, such as dimming the lights when playing a movie.Siri is also apart of this, as you'll be able to tell Siri to open an app or play content on your TV, as mentioned above for Apple TV, as well as turn the TV off and on. Plus, you'll be able to AirPlay content from your iPhone to your TV just like you can on an Apple TV.Shop Smart TVs on Amazon | Best Buy | Walmart

21. The Apple TV Remote Has a New IconNow that the Apple TV isn't the only TV that can be controlled with your iPhone with AirPlay 2, and with the new Apple TV Channels subscription, it's time to update the Apple TV Remote, which will work with those other TV sets. So instead of the Apple TV image, the image is now a remote control. This icon appears in the Control Center for its control tile, as well as in other areas of iOS such as inside the video Now Playing screen in Siri, the lock screen, etc. The old icon in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

22. The Apple TV Remote Control Looks BetterWhen using the Apple TV Remote in the Control Center, it would expand into a bigger card that let you access the menu, play/pause, use Siri, AirPlay content, rewind, fast-forward, and use the touchpad. Now, when you tap or long-press on the control, it expands full screen. The rewind and fast-forward buttons only appear when content is playing, and everything else is there plus a new "Search" button. The TV Remote in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

23. There's a New Screen Mirroring IconThe icon for "Screen Mirroring" has changed to more accurately visual what screen mirroring actually is. The former icon was very confusing, with just a triangle pointing up to a screen. The improved icon shows two displays. The Screen Mirroring control in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

24. And a New AirPlay Icon for VideoSee that old Screen Mirroring icon up above? Welp, that's your new AirPlay icon now for videos. Previously, the AirPlay icon was a triangle tower with circular airwaves being emitted, and that's still the same case for audio being AirPlayed. For video streams, the triangle, which basically is a sideways play button, is pointing up toward the display (or device) your AirPlaying too.

25. Now Playing on the Lock Screen Has More Video ControlsThe UI on the lock screen's Now Playing widget is a little different for videos being AirPlayed. You get that new icon mentioned above, which you can tap to select and deselect AirPlay 2 speakers. You also get the Apple TV remote icon, captions button, and some volume up and down buttons instead of a slider control. Image by Appleinsider/YouTube
26. AirPlay Groups Items by Content Type NowIf you have multiple AirPlay devices that work with your iPhone, the "destinations are now grouped by content type making it faster for you to find what device you want to play to," according to Apple.
27. You Can Multiple Task While AirPlaying VideoWhen you're AirPlaying video to a TV, you can now continue to use your iPhone to browse apps and play short audio and video files on your iPhone — without disrupting the AirPlay stream.

28. Apple News Is Now Available in CanadaIf you're in the northern section of North America, you won't have to miss out on Apple's news platform anymore since iOS 12.2 includes News support for Canada. At first, the number of sources available in the Apple News app will be limited, but it will continue to grow for Canadians as time goes on. But you can view news sources in either English or French, a nice addition. Also, Canadians can also subscribe to Apple News+ for $12.99 a month.

29. Apple News Got a Slight FaceliftAlso new to News are small visual changes. First, the "Apple" in "Apple News" up top by the date is replaced by the Apple icon, similar to how it is for Apple Pay. Also, the News logo and current temperature have been removed from the top right. Why did Apple remove those? Who knows. I don't see why the temperature had to go (except that it was buggy on occasion), but the News icon wasn't necessary. "Digest" is also replaced by the new "News+" tab.Don't Miss: iOS 12.2 Made Loving & Disliking Stories Harder in Apple News The "Today" view in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

30. Apple News Has a New Home Screen IconThe new home screen app icon for News is different. While the "N" part looks almost the same, only with some more curves, it now is the focus of the icon. Basically, it's like the zoomed in to the "N" in the old icon and cropped everything else out, leaving only a white border and adding some curves to the inside portion of the letter. The old icon in iOS 12.1.4 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right).

31. Siri Can Suggest 'Today at Apple' SessionsIf you live near an Apple Store that has "Today at Apple" mini classes, you might be able to get recommendations from Siri about upcoming events. In the "Siri & Search" settings for the Apple Store app, there's a new toggle for "Find Interests in Other Apps." By default, this is toggled on, so it's opt out, but with it on, it states that "Siri can suggest Today at Apple sessions based on your Safari and app usage."

32. AT&T Shows Up as '5G E' for Some UsersIf you have AT&T as your carrier, you might see a new "5G E" symbol instead of the normal "LTE" in the status bar. The new symbol stands for "5G Evolution," which is not to be confused with "5G" at all. Currently, there are no iPhone models that can support 5G speeds, so for those that see it on an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, XS, XS Max, or XR, it just means you've got Advanced 4G LTE speeds, a small step up from regular 4G.
