How To: Galaxy S5 Battery Dies Too Fast? Here's Why & How to Fix It

How To: Galaxy S5 Battery Dies Too Fast? Here's Why & How to Fix It
Samsung makes some wonderful phones, but one thing I've noticed is that battery life can start to degrade over time, causing the phone to die a lot faster than it used to. If you've been experiencing this issue, and have asked yourself, "Why does my Galaxy S5 die so fast?" there are a few likely causes—and we've got you covered with troubleshooting tips and simple fixes below.
Reason #1: Bad BatterySmartphone batteries are not designed to last forever—in fact, they begin to show signs of degradation after as little as 1 year. This means that as time goes on, your smartphone's battery isn't physically capable of holding as much of a charge as it once was.The Galaxy S5 was released almost 2 years ago, so battery degradation is beginning to become an issue. On the bright side, though, the battery is easily replaceable, and Samsung-certified batteries are relatively cheap. So before you try anything else, I'd suggest that you purchase a replacement battery, which start at less than $10 on Amazon. Here's a super simple way to test your battery to see if it needs replacing:
Reason #2: WakelocksIf a degrading battery isn't your issue, you're probably dealing with wakelocks. These are services used by apps to prevent your device from sleeping so that they can post notifications and sync data in the background, but the downside is that wakelocks are a huge battery drain. If you're a rooted user, there are several tools available for identifying and stopping wakelocks. We've covered many of these in the past, so the following links should go a long way towards fixing your battery issues.Identify Battery-Draining Wakelocks & Stop Them for Good Boost Battery Life by Taming Android's Location Wakelocks If your device is not rooted, on the other hand, dealing with wakelocks requires a different approach. Your best bet would be to keep an eye on Android's battery menu to find the apps that are draining the most juice, then simply uninstall or disable the offenders. For more information on this subject, see Tips 1-3 at the following guide.Find Out What Apps Are Draining Your Battery on Android
Reason #3: TouchWizIf you still feel like your phone is dying too fast after replacing the battery and taming any wakelocks, the only culprit left is Samsung's proprietary Android skin, TouchWiz. This is the base operating system installed on Galaxy devices, and it's infamous for being bloated, slow, and unfriendly towards batteries.Aside from perhaps installing a custom ROM, there's no way to completely rid your device of TouchWiz, but there are methods for keeping its negative effects to a minimum. I've covered the process for slimming down TouchWiz in the past, so if you're interested, check out the article below.Minimize TouchWiz on Galaxy Phones for a More Fluid Experience Which of these tips ultimately solved the battery issues you've been having with your Galaxy S5? News: Samsung's Galaxy Note 6 May Let You Scan Your Eye to Unlock

Samsung's next Galaxy Note smartphone is expected to contain some nifty new additions that the company hopes will give it the long desired edge it has been seeking over Apple. One of those features that might make the difference? An iris scanner, which could make it the first major smartphone on the market to have that technology included. The idea of using eye detection software isn't new to Samsung—they've invested in EyeVerify, a company that works with OEMs to bring eyeprint verification to Android devices. However, according to a report from the Dutch website Galaxy Club, it appears that iris scanners may be a permanent part of the new Note 6.Don't Miss: The Biometric Authentication Conundrum Long-time Galaxy users may also recall a TouchWiz feature called Smart Stay that used the front-facing camera to detect whether you were looking at the screen. This was done to "smartly" turn the screen off when it wasn't being used. An iris scanner would go a long way to make this tech much more efficient. The report went on to share a form that noted the arrival of parts to Samsung's research and development team in India. It is worth noting that the form doesn't designate whether these "iris cams" are for the Note 6 or any other upcoming Samsung product, just "Samsung Mobile." Import form for Samsung Mobile showing the 'Iris Cam.'. Image via Zauba Technologies & Data Services What makes this information intriguing is that while there is a lot more attention being paid to other feature such as water resistance and the inclusion of a USB Type-C port with reversible connector, as reported by SamMobile, an iris scanner isn't totally out of the question, especially if it could be used immediately on a flagship device like the Note. It's also is technology that wouldn't break the bank in the long run with estimates at about $5 per unit. And it could give users an added level of comfort in case they lose their device or it gets stolen.Follow Android Hacks on Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks on YouTube, Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: 9 Ways to Lock Your Android Without Using the Power Button

How To: 9 Ways to Lock Your Android Without Using the Power Button
Given how much use it gets on a daily basis, the power button is always one of the first hardware features to call it quits on an Android phone or tablet. So if your power button is acting up, or you don't want it to, you can extend its lifetime by simply finding ways to use it less. One of the biggest and least important uses of the power button is using it lock the device. Why least important? Because there are plenty of ways to turn your screen off and lock the device, and here are 9 great examples.#1. Use Floating Softkeys (Android 2.2+)One of the simplest methods, which is still very convenient, is adding a softkey to your home screen. It'll be readily available, and with one tap, you'll be locking your device in a second or less.
#2. Let Gravity Do It for You (Android 2.3.3+)With the application Gravity Screen, there's no need to even touch the device, as setting it face down will automatically lock it. Just set your smartphone down while you work and conserve a little battery life. Pick it back up and Gravity Screen will automatically flip on the display for you.
#3. Give It a Quick, Firm Shake (Android 4.0.3+, Root)Shaking your phone may look odd if someone sees you out of the corner of their eye, but the action makes it easy to lock your Android whenever you want. The shake required is on the firmer side, but this prevents any accidents from happening with a hyper-sensitive motion sensor.
#4. Swipe Your Screen (Android 4.0+)Swiping is an action we are consistently performing while we use our devices, so add a simple swiping gesture that'll let you seamlessly power down the display and lock your device.
#5. Try an Invisible Shortcut (Android 2.2+)While you could use a visible shortcut to lock your device, using an invisible one alleviates home screen clutter, but it's also just cool because only you will know where you placed it.
#6. Double-Tap the Status Bar (Android 2.0+, Root)What makes the double-tap method useful is that it can be performed from anywhere on your device. Although this mod works on Lollipop-running devices, it's not the easiest to perform due to Lollipop's notification panel, so if you're having trouble getting it just right, consider using another method before settling on this one.
#7. Repurpose the Google Now Gesture (Android 4.0+, Root)Who honestly uses their Google Now gesture? If you're like me and find this gesture useless, then change what it does. By assigning the screen-off action to the Google Now gesture, you'll be able to get some practical use out of this feature with a simple swipe up.
#8. Place It in Your Pocket (Android 4.0+)Pocket Lock has one of the most practical methods for locking your device: just place it in your pocket. Using the built-in gyroscope, the app will identify the position of the device in your pocket and lock it.
#9. Double Tap Your Screen (Android 4.0+)With this non-root take on the double-tap method, you will have the option to designate an activation area on your screen that can toggle the display off from within any application or screen.
There could technically be a #10 right now, but I assume you're all to smart for me to mention just going into the settings and using the time-out feature to automatically turn the screen off after a set interval.Want to get more out of your volume buttons? They can do much, much more than just raise and lower volume levels. Check out my other guide, "9 Alternative Uses for Your Android's Volume Keys," to see for yourself.Make sure to follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

How To: Switch Apps on the HTC One Like a Speed Demon Without a Multitask Button to Press

How To: Switch Apps on the HTC One Like a Speed Demon Without a Multitask Button to Press
There's no shortage of reasons to love the One, yet a feature curiously omitted from the device, much to the chagrin of power users, is a multitasking button. Most Android devices, in addition to 'home' and 'back' keys, have a 'multitasking' key which opens a task switcher and allows the user to quickly switch between apps. The One, however, forgoes the multitasking key allocating the task switcher to a double tap of the home key.One solution to avoid the cumbersome double tap is to convert the HTC logo into a 3rd button, but there's actually a faster gesture that you can enable with this softMod. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download Loopr from Play StoreGive Loopr - Task Switcher an install from the Play Store; it won't cost you a thing. Opening the app will take you to a tour outlining features. Swipe through it or hit home to skip it. Either way, you're going to need to set it up.

Step 2: Enable LooprLoopr will appear in your notifications, though you won't see it unless you pull the drop down menu. Go ahead and do that then tap the app to get to the set up screen. Make sure the box next to Service is checked. If you ever decide to stop using Loopr, tick this box again to disable the app.

Step 3: Edit 'Trigger'Loopr works by launching its own task switcher whenever you enact a gesture by dragging your finger or thumb from either edge of the screen. Tap Edit trigger to set this up.You'll see a bar that measures sensitivity as well as two sets of adjustable brackets at each edge of the screen. You can increase the of effect for either set of brackets in addition to the location of the gesture by dragging the brackets around. You can also turn the gesture on or off entirely by tapping the center where you'll see a toggle that reads 'on'.I find it's best to leave the gestures near the default location around the bottom center edge of the screen where your thumb will rest naturally. But feel free to tinker. I did find that I had to turn the sensitivity up before I was able to open the switcher successfully.

Step 4: Set DelayMany apps, such as Gmail, have navigation drawers that can be accessed by dragging from the left edge of the screen. This could interfere with the Loopr gesture. You could offset this by setting up a delay for the trigger in the Loopr launch menu.A 1/4 second delay worked for me and is still pretty fast, but you could set up a delay as long as one second of having to hold the gesture before the task switcher appears. Alternatively, you could disable the trigger on the left side using the method discussed above, or you could intentionally avoid your set trigger zone when you need to.

Step 5: Switch Tasks Like a ChampionWith everything set up the way you need it to be, launch the Loopr's task switcher anytime by using the gestures you've set. You'll see a radial semicircle of your five most recent apps. Simple, quick, and sleeker than HTC's card like app switcher. If you want to see even more, drag up to the plus sign with the radial open then back down to view older apps. Drag out to the app and release to launch the app. Just make sure the app icon is highlighted before you release or it won't launch. I overshot a few times while testing. You'll now be switching tasks in milliseconds. Multitasking key not needed.

From any screen, you can now simply expand your notification tray to get quick access to media volume controls. There are buttons for lowering and raising the volume as well as muting it altogether, so you should never be caught off guard by blaring video volumes again.
