News: Every Picture-in-Picture Compatible Android App
For those of us who love to multitask, picture-in-picture mode is a godsend. The feature, introduced in Android 8.0 Oreo, lets you enjoy videos in a floating window overlaid on top of another app. However, while the OS does have native support, only a select number of apps support the feature.Despite Oreo being almost a year old and Android 9.0 releasing soon, there are still only a handful of apps that support the feature. Because picture-in-picture (PiP) mode has a limited use-case, only apps that benefit from the new feature have implemented it. As a result, the list is short — but it is growing. With many apps on the list, you'll need to enable the feature first before using it. Check out the link below on how to activate PiP in supported apps.Don't Miss: How to Use the New Picture-in-Picture Mode in Android Oreo

Compatible AppsYouTube: Music videos require YouTube Premium. All other videos now work with PiP in the US without a subscription. YouTube TV: All live and on-demand content. Netflix: Requires Android 8.1 Oreo or higher. Twitch: Must be enabled within the app's settings. Google Maps: Turn-by-turn directions support PiP mode. Google Play Movies & TV: All movies and TV shows work with PiP. Google Duo: All video calls initiated or received. Facebook: All videos viewed in Facebook's video player work with PiP. Instagram: All videos watched within the app. IGTV: All videos watched within the app. Google Chrome: Videos must be viewed in full screen first to activate PiP mode. YouTube not supported. Brave Browser: Videos must be viewed in full screen first to activate PiP mode. YouTube not supported. Microsoft Edge: Videos must be viewed in full screen first to activate PiP mode. YouTube not supported. VLC Media Player: Must enable in app's settings first. WhatsApp: Video calling supports PiP mode. Telegram: Video calls and videos shared within the app both support PiP mode. Pocket Casts: Video podcasts support PiP mode. HDHomeRun: Live TV supports PiP mode. While this list is small relative to the number of media apps on the market, it continues to grow. We hope other major video streaming services like Hulu, Prime Video, and VRV will eventually add the feature so their customers can enjoy it.We'll keep this list updated as we find more apps that support Picture-in-Picture mode, so check back for new entries. How To: Take a Screenshot on Any Smartphone or Tablet

How To: Take a Screenshot on Any Smartphone or Tablet
Taking screen captures is a standard feature on iPhones and newer Android smartphones, but for some reason it's not very intuitive. Screenshots allow you to share your phone's screen with your friends, document technical problems for customer support, and even make how-to guides easier to follow. So, it's definitely worth remembering. Here's how you do it.

iPhoneTo take a photo of the current screen on your iPhone, simply hold down the Home and Sleep/Wake (aka On/Off) buttons at the same time. On an iPhone running 2.0, your screen will flash white. On devices running iOS 2.1 and higher, there will also be a nifty camera shutter sound effect. Image via ted.me To access your screenshots, just go to Photos, then Camera Roll. The process for taking a screenshot on your iPhone is pretty much the same for your iPad and iPod touch. Click here to learn more.

AndroidOn an Android phone running 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), hold the Volume Down and Power buttons down at the same time. The screen will flash and you'll hear a sound effect. If you look to your notification bar, you should also see a little picture icon appear and disappear, along with a Saving Screenshot message. You will then be alerted when the screenshot has been successfully saved. Pretty easy, right? It didn't use to be! Image via millionclues.com If you're on a phone running Jelly Bean (4.1) or later, you can view a preview of the screenshot by pulling down your notification drawer. Image via howtogeek.com Your picture can now be found in a new folder called Screenshot in the Gallery app. Image via howtogeek.com

BlackBerryUnlike iPhone and Android phones, the Blackberry unfortunately does not have a built-in screenshot function. However, a third-party app, Capture It, will make sure you don't feel left out.Simply open www.captureitota.com with your phone's browser, scroll down, and click on Download. Install the app and head on over to your phone's Options. Then navigate to Application Management (Applications if your OS is older than BlackBerry 6). Find Capture It, press the Menu button, select Edit Permissions, and change all permissions to Allow. Now all you need to do to take screenshots is select Capture It by hitting your Menu button and scrolling down to the option. It's not quite as convenient as an Android or iPhone, but it works!

Privacy 101: How to Prevent Apps from Accessing Your iPhone's Microphone

Privacy 101: How to Prevent Apps from Accessing Your iPhone's Microphone
Any app on your iPhone could potentially listen in on your conversations and use that information to target you with tailored ads. Although most companies, including Facebook and Apple, have come out and vehemently denied these claims of spying on consumers, who's to say they're telling the truth? The only way to be sure you're safe is to take matters into your own hands.Regardless of how transparent some companies may seem, they're still in the business of making money, and learning everything about you can make them billions. In this article, we'll explain the technology that these applications use to listen in on you and how you can prevent them from accessing your smartphone or tablet's microphone. Even if these apps aren't listening to all of your conversations, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Are Gaming Apps Listening in on You?Back in December 2017, The New York Times published an article detailing how certain mobile gaming apps keep tabs on their users by listening to certain sounds through their smartphone's mic. Using software from a company known as Alphonso, which collects viewing data for advertisers, certain gaming applications can use your phone's microphone to learn what you watch, listening in the background for audio signals playing from your TV, including gaming consoles, TV shows, streaming programs, and advertisements. The information is then analyzed and paired with your location (yes, they can also track your location) to learn which ads resulted in you going to a restaurant or retailer, for example. If you go to Alphonso's website, they even have a template for mobile app developers to copy and paste into their app descriptions, explaining how their apps integrated with Alphonso Automated Content Recognition ("ACR") software can listen in on you. However, it is important to note three things: 1) audio samples don't leave your device, but are instead "hashed into digital audio signatures," 2) the ACR software does not "recognize or understand human conversations," and most importantly, 3) the software can only gain access to your phone's microphone with your consent.Editor's Note: As of the day this article was published, we could no longer find any applications using the ACR software to listen in on you in the App Store.
'Hey Siri' & Other TriggersSadly, these malicious gaming apps aren't the only ones who could be listening in. Do you use triggers to prompt Siri ("Hey Siri") or Google ("Okay Google")? If so, these applications are listening in on you, and they have the potential to record your conversations. Although Apple recently sent a letter to Reuters claiming that their devices do not record audio while listening for Siri commands, lying isn't out of the question for the tech giant.Even worse, there's potential that other applications on your smartphone, such as Facebook and Instagram, could have hundreds or thousands of hidden triggers, although what they are is anyone's guess. A conversation about wanting to purchase a new pair of glasses could activate the trigger. Once this happens, audio could be recorded and data transferred in encrypted form, making it nearly impossible to track.Luckily, applications can only listen in on you and triggers can only be activated if you're giving them access to your microphone.

Step 1: Don't Give Microphone Access to AppsThe first time you download and use an application, it may ask you to grant it access to your smartphone's microphone. While it makes sense to do it for some apps (WhatsApp), it may not be necessary for others (Fortnite). If an application asks you for access to the microphone, tap on "Don't Allow." Even if you do give an application access to the microphone, you can always go into the settings and remove access later on. It's worth noting that removing access to the microphone may break certain functionality within some apps. For example, in the screenshot above, Amazon's voice search feature wouldn't work without microphone access. If this becomes a problem, you can always re-enable microphone access using the instructions in the next step, though you should do this sparingly and only with apps you explicitly trust.

Step 2: Remove Microphone Access to Third-Party AppsIf you want to remove microphone access to a third-party application after it's been granted, simply go to the Settings app and tap on "Privacy" and then on "Microphone." You'll see a list of every third-party application that has access to your microphone. Toggle any of the switches to off (see below) to remove microphone access.

Step 3: Disable 'Hey Siri'Not all applications with access to your microphone appear under the Microphone setting, including Siri. If you want Siri to stop listening for the "Hey Siri" trigger all of the time, disable the feature. Go to the Settings app and tap on "Siri & Search." Scroll down and turn off "Listen for Hey Siri." Although Siri will still use your microphone when you turn it on, it won't actively be listening to you in the background. How To: Manage App Permissions on Android (No Root Required)

How To: Manage App Permissions on Android (No Root Required)
When it comes to app permissions, Android takes an "all or nothing" approach. You have no granular control over what data apps can access, so the only way to prevent an app from seeing your location or starting up on boot, for instance, is to not install the app in the first place. In the past, we've covered mods that will allow you to revoke individual permissions for your installed apps, but these all had one thing in common—they required root access. But a new app from developer Zack Wang takes a creative approach to this problem, and the end result is a granular permission control system that does not require root.Essentially, the app can take any of your existing apps, then inject a wrapper into their coding that allows you to disable certain permissions. It's a rather ingenious solution, since its only requirement is that you've enabled Unknown sources in your phone's Security settings under.
Step 1: Install MoboCleanThe no-root solution for managing app permissions on Android is called MoboClean (formly called UU AppPurifier), and it's available for free directly from the developer.

Step 2: "Purify" Your AppsWhen you first launch MoboClean, you'll be given a chance to review the app's license agreement. Tap "Agree" on this message, then you'll be taken to the main menu. To begin revoking app permissions, tap the "Purify" button in the middle of the screen. From here, press the "Next" button, and you'll be taken to a list of all your installed apps. Using this menu, select any apps whose permissions you'd like to revoke, then press the "Purify" button at the bottom of the screen. At this point, the app will go about working its magic. From a more technical standpoint, a wrapper that will provide a permission management interface is being injected into the APK installer file for the apps you've selected. Momentarily, MoboClean will ask you to uninstall the original copy of this app, then install the modified version immediately after. So allow the app to inject its wrapper into the APK, then a system menu will appear asking you to uninstall the app that's being modified. Tap "OK" on this dialog box, but note that this app's existing data will be lost in the process, so you'll have to log back into any associated accounts later. Immediately after that's finished, another system menu will appear asking you to re-install this app. Tap the "Install" button here, then repeat this same uninstall/re-install process for any other apps you elected to modify. When all apps have been purified, you'll be taken to the "Manage permissions" screen.

Step 3: Revoke App PermissionsWhen the "Purification" process is complete, simply select an app to modify its permissions. From here, you can revoke the app's permissions to run on startup, hold a background process, or post new notifications. Beneath these options, you can revoke privacy-related permissions. Just select a permission, then choose either "Prompt" or "Deny." When you're done modifying an app's permissions, tap "OK" at the bottom of the screen. Coinbase 101: How to Buy & Sell Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum & Litecoin
Coinbase has become the most popular mobile wallet app due in large part to its user-friendliness. The app takes the hassle out of buying and selling Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ethereum (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC), letting Android and iPhone users alike trade their favorite cryptocurrency in a few easy steps.Cryptocurrency wallet apps tend to center around security and privacy, often at the expense of ease of use. Coinbase instead has focused on both security and convenience, letting you process mobile transactions as easy as you would using your favorite mobile banking app. In a way, this app has been a huge blessing for the world of cryptocurrencies, as it makes it more accessible to the average person, paving the way for mainstream acceptance.Don't Miss: All the Coinbase Fees & Fine Print You Need to Know About Buying and selling digital currencies on Coinbase is pretty straightforward once you have your account set up, though there are some small tidbits that you may want to pay closer attention to in order to avoid any potential headaches. We've covered the process in more detail below, so read further if you're ready to get started with cryptocurrency.

Step 1: Pick a Digital Currency to Buy or SellTo get started, open Coinbase and start a new transaction by tapping on your desired digital currency's information card from the main screen. You'll now be taken to an overview page displaying the cryptocurrency's current price, along with a graph showing its highs and lows over the past hour, day, week, etc. Tap on either the "Buy" or "Sell" button, depending on the transaction you want to conduct. Alternatively, you can access your wallets by tapping on "Accounts" at the bottom of your screen. Once inside "Accounts," you're free to select from the list of available wallets, so tap on the wallet you wish to conduct a transaction with. You'll now be taken to that particular coin's wallet, which shows your transaction history, so tap on either "Buy" or "Sell," depending on what you wish to do. Once inside the buy page, you'll have the option to select a different cryptocurrency to buy from the top tabs, that way you don't have to go back and do either of the above options again.

Step 2: Buy Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, or LitecoinInside the sales page, you'll first want to choose which account to use to pay for your digital currency purchase. Note that there can be wait times depending on how you want to pay. Debit and credit card buys, as well as ones from your USD wallet, are available immediately, while bank transfers can take up to and even over a week sometimes. When you know how you want to pay, tap on the "Payment" tab and select a funding source from within the "Payment Method" page that appears. You'll be automatically taken back to the sales page after choosing a payment method, and you'll be free to enter the amount you wish to buy. Input the dollar amount of the cryptocurrency you want to buy in the USD box to the left. The value of the digital coin will automatically populate in the BTC, BCH, ETH, or LTC box. You can also enter the amount you want to purchase in the cryptocurrency box on the right-hand side, which will then display its dollar value on the USD box.Keep in mind that there are variable fees depending on the amount you purchase, and those fees are included in the amount you choose, not added on afterward. So, if you want to buy $100 worth of bitcoins using a bank transfer, you will need to type in $102.99 instead, to account for the fee. Also, there are maximum weekly limits you'll need to abide by, as well as any limits imposed by your bank.Once you're satisfied with the price and amount of digital currency you want to buy, either tap on the blue "Buy" button at the bottom of the screen if you have an iPhone or tap "Next" in the upper-right corner if you use an Android device. You'll then be taken to a confirmation page which summarizes your purchase, complete with the rate at which you purchased the coin, time of arrival, payment method, and fees charged by Coinbase. Now, either tap on the arrow sign in the upper-left corner of your screen to go back and edit your purchase or select the blue "Confirm buy" button at the bottom of the screen to finalize the transaction.

Step 3: Sell Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, or LitecoinThe steps for selling your cryptocurrencies are basically the same as buying, apart from a few key differences. After you hit "Sell" on the cryptocurrency you want, because you're receiving money, you'll need to first choose an account to deposit your proceeds into. So, tap on the "Deposit to" tab, and select either your USD wallet or bank account from within the Destination Account page. After choosing an account to deposit your money into, you'll be automatically taken back to the sales page. From there, either input the cryptocurrency amount or its dollar value, but remember to factor in the fees.Once you're done, either tap on the blue "Sell" button if you have an iPhone or tap on "Next" in the upper-right corner if you have an Android device. A confirmation page will now appear showing the rate, time of arrival, withdrawal method, and applied fees. So either tap on the arrow sign in the upper-left corner to go back and tweak the sale or select the blue "Confirm sell" button to finalize the transaction if you're satisfied with your selection.Note that if you are transferring money to a banking account instead of your USD wallet, it may take up to a week for the funds to process. The USD wallet is instant. Now that wasn't that bad, was it?
