How To: Repurpose Android's Google Now Gesture to Lock Your Device
The Google Now gesture included in the Google Now Launcher and on Nexus devices isn't something I regularly utilize, and you might not either. There is a way to disable it, which is a good idea if you were executing it accidentally, but what's even better than disabling it? Repurposing it!We've already showed you how to launch applications using the Google Now gesture, but now there's another way to take advantage of this shortcut, thanks to developer Keerthi Kumar. By using his new app, you'll be able to save some wear and tear on your power button and lock your device by way of the upward-swipe Google Now gesture. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install ScreenOffThe installation is simple, but you will need to ensure that your device is rooted. If it's not, take a look at our rooting guide for Android, then report back here. Also, since ScreenOff is not on Google Play, you will need to make sure "Unknown sources" is enabled so you can install the APK file.Now download the ScreenOff APK (currently version 1.1), then install it like any other APK file. For newer versions, make sure to keep eyes on Keerthi's XDA thread.

Step 2: Enable ScreenOff Google Now GestureWhen you swipe up from the bottom of the display to perform the Google Now gesture, you will be prompted to select how you would like to complete the action. Select "Screen Off," then "Always."

Step 3: Allow Root Access (Important)On the XDA thread, plenty of the issues reported were a result of this step. When you first perform the gesture, you will need to wait a second or two for the Superuser request to pop up, then select "Grant." If the app is not granted access through this popup, you will have issues, resulting in the need to uninstall and reinstall the app. With Superuser access granted, you can now swipe up to turn your screen off and lock the device. And unlike other screen-off apps, like Pocket Lock or Gravity Screen, ScreenOff will not disable the Smart Lock feature introduced on Lollipop.

Other ScreenOff OptionsAlong with the Google Now gesture, ScreenOff offers a couple of other ways to turn your screen off. Using the icon in the app drawer or a widget, you can turn your screen off without using the hard key. Some people have had issues with the widget not being applicable, so just be aware of that. On a recent trip to Palm Springs, I found myself navigating with Google Maps and virtually exploring my destiniation using its built-in Street View feature. The thing is, using Street View can make keeping track of your exact location difficult as you zoom in, out, and about. It's a little discombobulating.Google may not yet offer a way to view Maps and Street View simultaneously, but dev Mark Acme does with his app Street Panorama. This app divides your screen in two, with the top portion displaying the street view and the bottom half the map pinpointing your current location. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Head on over to the Google Play Store to search for and install Street Panorama, or just hit this link on your device to go directly there. When you first open the app, it will automatically show your current location, assuming you have location services (GPS) enabled on your device. To change areas, type in an address, city, country, state, or even a landmark, and the map will jump to that location.To move the pin on the map section, simply tap and hold where you'd like to drop it. When moving through the top half (Street View), you can use the on-screen arrows, or move forward and back with your volume keys. (1) The White household. (2) The Eiffel Tower. Depending on who you ask, the OnePlus One smartphone has so far been either a bit of a letdown or a rousing success.New to the industry, manufacturer OnePlus has been unable to keep up with the high demand for its first flagship device. Even today, a few months after the launch party, customers can only purchase a OnePlus One if they have an invitation to do so. Invites can be given by other One owners, or by winning one in an official (sometimes insulting) contest.The high demand is partly due to the CyanogenMod firmware that comes pre-installed on the One. In a move to attract some of the more hardcore Android fans, OnePlus contracted the development team at Cyanogen, Inc. to build the stock software that ships with their flagship. This build was tailor-made for the One, and featured many exclusive tweaks and optimizations that won't be found on the standard version of CyanogenMod.One such feature is a sleek new revamped lock screen. Originally exclusive to the OnePlus One's "CyanogenMod 11S" build, developer Selçuk Erkol has ported this lock screen to all devices. Installing this lock screen app doesn't require root or any special permissions, and you don't even need an invite to try it out. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Erkol's OnePlus One lock screen app is not available on Google Play. As such, you'll need to be sure that your phone is set to allow for installation of apps from unknown sources.

Step 1: Install OnePlusOneLockScreenInstalling the lock screen replacement app is simple—you'll just need to download an installer file. From your Android device, tap this link to get the file.If you're using the Chrome browser for Android, you'll have to press OK on the pop-up that shows directly after you've tapped that link. From there, wait until the file has finished downloading, then tap the Download Complete notification. At this point, Android's installer interface should come right up. Review the permissions and tap Install from this screen, then press Open when it's finished.

Step 2: Configure OnePlusOneLockScreenThe interface is pretty drab, but the app functions beautifully. To enable the OnePlus One lock screen on your phone, just toggle the Set Lockscreen option to On. Next, you can use the Changed Lock Color option to change the color of the lower half of the OnePlus One lock screen.

Step 3: Disable Your Existing Lock ScreenAt this point, your new lock screen will already be in place. But the existing Android lock screen will be hidden behind it, effectively leaving you with two lock screens.To remedy this, a quick trip into Settings is needed. From here, head into Security, then select Screen Lock. To disable the stock lock screen and leave only the new OnePlus One lock screen in place, select None from this menu. With that out of the way, you're ready to start enjoying your new lock screen. To unlock your device, you'll simply need to swipe downward on the lower half of the screen. Or maybe ... we wait things out and grab the next Pixel after that?According to Google, Pixel phones continuously get security updates at least three years past the time of the phone's official release, or for a minimum of 18 months after the last Pixel is sold from the Google Store.
