How To: Add a Custom Background Image to Your iPhone's Control Center

How To: Add a Custom Background Image to Your iPhone's Control Center
A few months ago, we showed off a great third-party keyboard for iOS 8 called CooolKey which lets you customize the keyboard itself with any background image you want. Well, take that idea and apply it to the Control Center and we have CCBackground. This is a Cydia tweak, so unlike with CooolKey, you will need to have a jailbroken iOS 8 device to add a Control Center wallpaper. Note, this will only work on an iPhone or iPod touch, not an iPad. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install CCBackgroundOpen up the Cydia app and search for and install "CCBackground" from developer TheJailPad in the BigBoss repo. Once installed, make sure to respring to full install it.

Step 2: Configure CCBackgroundAfter you've restarted your springboard, head into your Settings app and select the "CCBackground" options towards the bottom. In the preferences, you'll be able to enable the tweak and select your image. There's also an option to prevent your image from appearing in landscape mode, since it'll most likely be squeezed, but unfortunately, it did not functioned for me on my iPhone 6. If it works for you, awesome.

Step 3: Choose Your Image & RespringOnce you've selected an image from your Camera Roll, tap "Done" in the upper-right corner, and your device will automatically respring. After your system is back up and running, you should now have an awesome background in your Control Center. Just slide up and take a look. Now, if only someone would take this idea and apply it to the recent apps menu, we would have total background customization!

Accidentally deleting important files can happen as easily as swiping left on something and watching it disappear into the ether. Of course, Apple allows automatic backups through iCloud, which ensures that your data is always stored safely in the cloud in case of emergency. If you want to restore something you erased, like a contact, calendar event, reminder, etc. (there's a built-in way to recover photos and videos, so you don't have to worry about that), the old way of getting it back was to restore your entire device, either through iTunes on your computer or iCloud on your iOS device, which can take a bit of time.Luckily, the web version of iCloud offers a viable option to restoring your entire device—just choose what you want to restore. Using iCloud on your computer, you can pick to restore certain files, contacts, reminders, or your calendar.

Step 1: Sign into iCloud on Your ComputerOn your desktop browser, go to iCloud.com and sign it with your Apple ID credentials. The iCloud website does not work well with mobile devices—even if you request the desktop site.

Step 2: Go to SettingsAfter selecting Settings from the iCloud menu, look for the Advanced section on the page at the bottom left. There are three options underneath Advanced, including:Restore Files (from apps that support iCloud Drive) Restore Contacts Restore Calendars and Reminders You can use any of these settings to recover data from previous iCloud backups, which occur in the background whenever you're connected to Wi-Fi and a charger.

Step 3: Find Your Backup FileWhichever option you select, a window will appear where you can rifle through an archive of the backups you have for files, contacts, and calendars. Several months of backups will be available to choose from, which should be more than enough to retrieve what you want.

Step 4: Restore Your BackupOnce you're ready to get back old data, hit "Restore" next to the correct backup, hit "Restore" again on the new window, then just wait. When your data is finished restoring, you'll receive a confirmation through iCloud, as well as through the email that's attached to your Apple ID. Your files will be updated almost instantly, allowing you to go back on your iOS device to view your once-missing data.Follow Apple Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Apple tips.

How To: Edit Your iPhone Pics Using Third-Party Editing Tools in iOS 8's Stock Photos App

Extensibility is a feature that allows developers to integrate their apps into iOS 8 in different ways—that's how we have widgets in the Notification Center, more sharing options in the Photos app, the use of third-party keyboards such as SwiftKey, and more.Another such feature that has emanated from extensibility, which I very much welcome as an avid photographer, is the ability to use third-party photo editing tools directly from the Photos app. With this feature, you can add filters, instill text, and use other tools to edit all of your photos from a single app. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
In Photos, select a picture you would like to edit, then tap on Edit. At the top left, you'll see a circle icon with three-dots in it: this is the new icon that appears when you have a third-party app on your device that connects with your built-in photo editor. Note: The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have the circle icon with three dots located at the bottom of the screen, since the device has more room for icons. When you tap on the icon, you'll get a screen where a listing of your compatible apps will be. If you don't see any there, tap on More to view the apps that are compatible with the built-in photo editor, then enable them so they show up in the editing tools menu. Now that the app is enabled, go back to the menu where you'll see the new app icon appear. Tap on it, and the tools that you would usually see only in the third-party app will now appear integrated in the Photos app. With Litely, the filters from the app are available directly through the Photos app—just scroll down to select one, then swipe left and right to adjust its intensity. Tap Done when you're finished and your photo will be saved with your edits. For all of you iPhoneographers, this is a feature that you're sure to love as it rolls out with more third-party apps.

News: Finally, Real Proof That the iPhone 7 Will Come with a Headphones Lightning Adapter

News: Finally, Real Proof That the iPhone 7 Will Come with a Headphones Lightning Adapter

We've been hearing rumors for months now that suggest Apple will be getting rid of the 3.5 mm headphone jack in the iPhone 7, which will presumably be replaced by an adapter that connects your earbuds directly to the Lightning port. But finally, thanks to Vietnamese site Tinhte, we now have some hard evidence to back up this claim.Don't Miss: Everything We Know About the iPhone 7
The adapter cable looks to be about as simple as it can get—you just plug one side into your iPhone's Lightning port, then connect your earbuds to the other end. The design and form factor are in line with previous Apple adapters, which is a solid indication that this leak is the real deal.Adding to the credibility, the above video includes a little demonstration. We can clearly see that the new adapter works fine on a device running the iOS 10 beta, but an error message appears when the leaker plugs it into an iOS 9 device. At the very least, this would be pretty hard to fake.Amazingly enough, this leak wasn't recorded on a potato, for once. The video gives you a great look at the new adapter, and the leaker even snapped a few pics in crystal-clear quality, which you can check out below. Images via Tinhte The downside to this new adapter is that it doesn't let you charge your iPhone while you listen to music, but hopefully we'll see some third-party accessories that let you do both at once. This new 3.5 mm-to-Lightning adapter is rumored to be included with the new iPhone, so it's likely that Apple's signature EarPods will come with the same 3.5 mm jack they've always had (other brands already make Lightning headphones). Apple is said to be working on wireless earbuds, but you'll probably have to make an additional purchase for those—if they even materialize.Apple will surely face some backlash for releasing a device without a headphone jack, but this move should allow them to make the iPhone 7 a bit thinner, in line with the new Moto Z, which also axed the headphone jack in favor of a 3.5 mm-to-USB C adapter.Follow Gadget Hacks on YouTube, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter

How To: Turn the HTC Logo on Your HTC One into a Working Menu & Power Button

How To: Turn the HTC Logo on Your HTC One into a Working Menu & Power Button
Like many other smartphones, the HTC One has a few capacitive keys on the bottom of the device, but that's the problem. It only has a few keys, meaning two, which are the Back and Home keys.Other devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 2, also only have two capacitive keys, but they additionally have a hard button that gives them a total of three options at the bottom—Back, Home, and Menu.On the HTC One, there is the HTC logo in-between the Back and Home keys, but it's just that—a logo. Why did they choose not to make that a key also? Who knows, but today, I'm going to show you how to softMod your HTC One so that logo actually does something. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
To turn the HTC logo into a working capacitive key, we'll need to install a custom kernel. What's a kernel? Well, keep reading.

Kernels ExplainedThe way operating systems work is through the use of kernels, frameworks, applications, libraries, and the runtime. The picture below lays out the different parts of the Android operating system. Image via wikimedia.org You'll notice that the kernel deals with direct relations between the hardware and software. Developers often create custom kernels to add additional features for devices that the manufacturers either leave out or disable. That being said, third-party kernels have no stability guaranteed, so caution is needed when installing them and compatibility must be ensured.
Compatibility WarningThis mod was created for the International variant of the HTC One and only works on GSM models with an unlocked bootloader. I have only tested it out on the AT&T version, so your mileage may vary.It does not work on CDMA models (Sprint, Verizon), so don't even try it!
Step 1: Download the KernelWe're going to be using teaMseven_kernel_SENSE, made possible by Peter Hofinger (aka n3oc0rt3x) and Pal Zoltan Illes (aka illespal). You can download it directly from here. You'll want to copy it to the root of the internal storage for easy flashing in recovery mode.
Step 2: Do a Nandroid BackupFirst, we'll need to boot into recovery to do a nandroid backup. If you're using TWRP, this is how you do it.Turn off your device. Press and hold Volume Down and Power to boot into HBOOT. Press Volume Down to select Recovery. Press the Power button to confirm. Tap Backup. Select Boot, Cache, Data, Recovery, and System and Swipe to back up your device. When it's finished, tap the Home button.

Step 3: Install the KernelNow that we're all backed up and ready to go, we'll install our new kernel. From the TWRP custom recovery menu, do the following.Tap Install. Select the teaMSeven .zip file. Swipe to Confirm Flash and start the Aroma installer.

Step 4: Choose Your OptionsThe mod gives you a multitude of options regarding button mapping, including the ability to make the capacitive LEDs pulse when you receive notifications (if the device is not charging and screen is off).I personally prefer the Logo2Wake and Logo2Menu - Logo2Sleep long tap option because this will basically turn your HTC logo into a power and menu button. You'll be able to tap on the logo to wake the device, just like you would with the power button, and when the screen is on, tap once to open up the menu. To put it to sleep, just long-press on the logo. A quick note: If you install an option enabling the Menu button, you'll want to tick the box labeled Remove 3 dot menu, which will remove the on-screen three-dot menu from showing in non-Sense apps. Images via wonderhowto.com Once it is finished, tap Finish, tap Yes to reboot, and you are good to go!

Reverting Back to Stock Boring KeysIf you want to go back to stock, you can re-flash the .zip file and just select the Stock option instead, which will return your HTC One back to normal, with an HTC logo that does nothing.
