How To: Avoid "Scuffgate" and Other iPhone 5 Problems

How To: Avoid "Scuffgate" and Other iPhone 5 Problems

Getting a new phone is like getting a pair of new socks—you can't wait to try them on and when you do, they feel totally awesome. Maybe that's just me, but for many customers that have already received their highly anticipated iPhone 5 in the mail, awesome is definitely not the word they are using. While the new iOS 6 has already received a good number of complaints, some customers have more pressing issues to be angered about, like receiving damaged new iPhones right out of the box. Image via wordpress.com

ScuffgateScuffgate, a completely legitimate reference to the Watergate scandal, is becoming a huge problem for Apple. There have been thousands of reports of iPhone 5s being delivered to eager customers with noticeable scuffs and scratches. Apple's new anodized aluminum casing was said to make the aluminum harder and thus more resistant to scratches and marks, but it seems that with regular handling, the anodized aluminum is removed, revealing the shinier bare aluminum underneath. Images via apple.com, photobucket.com Anodization is the process in which natural oxide film or coat is increased through electrolysis. And apparently that process makes it very susceptible to scratches, as iFixit demonstrates below: Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
And what does Apple say about this? Apple's SVP of Marketing, Phil Schiller, is calling it "normal".

Fixing Your Scuffed iPhone 5Luckily, all of those who received a damaged iPhone 5 can go into their local Apple Store and request a new one free of charge. Customers can also contact Apple's customer service and order a new phone to be shipped out. Thankfully, you will still be able to use your iPhone meanwhile, sending it back in the same box the new phone will be delivered in. It has also been suggested that people opt for the white iPhone 5 as it is less susceptible to such visible scuffing. Image via amazonaws.com If you are more of the nonchalant, quick-fix type, then using a flat black paint marker to touch up the edges is always an option. If you want to get really intense you can take apart your iPhone, like iFixit recently did, and then de-anodize it yourself. Image via extremetech.com After you take it all apart you are going to have to soak the casing in Greased Lightning for about half an hour. You of course need to remove as many of the electrical components as you can—or get risky and try and create a waterproof cover for them on your own. Once that's done you can use sandpaper or a copper sponge to buff the aluminum back down to its shiny base.

Leaking Light ProblemAnother cosmetic issue that has been discovered is this small light leakage. The leakage has only been confirmed on a few white iPhone 5s so far. With such a small sample size of complaints, its hard to judge how big of an issue this is. Image via vimg.net The crack is very hard to notice, being visible only in very low light, so it is possible that many people simply haven't seen it yet. But according to many people, Apple is fully willing to replace models with this defect. Image via apple.com Let us know if you find any other iPhone 5 problems—and how you solved them.

How To: Fix Screen Burns on Your Nexus 6 or Other AMOLED Device

How To: Fix Screen Burns on Your Nexus 6 or Other AMOLED Device
Many Nexus 6 owners, myself included, have already started to experience the dreaded burn-in issues that often come with AMOLED display technology. These displays are different than your typical LCD screen in that each pixel emits its own light instead of using a backlight, so this leaves AMOLED screens more susceptible to issues with dim or unresponsive pixels. This is particularly true for portions of the screen that display static elements—Android's navigation bar, for instance. While apps that can revive such burned-in pixels have existed in the past, most of these were written for Samsung devices. And since Samsung is the only manufacturer that still uses physical buttons, on-screen buttons that have become burned-in cannot be treated with these apps. But developer Brendon Sled has a brand new app that can fix all burned-in portions of an AMOLED display since it takes software navigation keys into consideration. It uses Android 5.0's built-in "Invert Colors" function to negate the effects of AMOLED burn-in—and I can personally vouch for its effectiveness as it has cured my own woes. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install AMOLED Burn-in FixerSled's app is called AMOLED Burn-in Fixer, and it's available on the Google Play Store for free. Search it by name to get it installed, or use this link to jump straight to the install page.

Step 2: Test for Burn-InAMOLED Burn-in Fixer offers an easy way to test your device for screen burn issues. From the app's main screen, select the "Test Burn-in" tab, then tap the "Hide UI" button. The solid gray background that takes up your entire screen at this point makes it easy to identify burn-in issues. Pay close attention to the navigation and status bar areas, as these are the most susceptible.

Step 3: Fix the Burn-InIf you do indeed have screen burn-in on your device, head back over to the main tab to fix it. From here, you can let the app know whether you're having issues with burn-in on both the navigation and status bars, or just the navigation bar. Next, tap the "Enable Inverted Colors" button, and you'll be taken to an Android settings menu. From here, scroll down a bit, then toggle the switch next to "Color inversion." After that, all of the elements on your screen will look like a photo negative. This is how the effects of burn-in will be reversed—by overlaying an inverted version of the burned-in elements.Since this process will take some time, it would be a good idea to adjust your display timeout. Head to "Settings," then "Display," then set the "Sleep" value to 30 minutes. Back in AMOLED Screen Burn-in Fixer, tap the "Hide Settings" button. At this point, only a negative version of the status bar and navigation bar should be visible. Since your burn-in issues may be more or less extreme than the next guy, there's no perfect timetable as to how long you should leave this screen visible. I'd suggest disabling the inverted colors after 5 minutes, then using the "Test Burn-in" feature to see how much progress has been made. For me, it took about 30 minutes of displaying the inverted screen to get rid of my burn-in issues—but it worked like a charm! How long did it take to get rid of your screen burn-in? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Root Your Nexus 5An Easy Guide for First-Timers

How To: Root Your Nexus 5An Easy Guide for First-Timers
It's time. You've experimented with apps from the Play Store, you've switched your lock screen, and maybe you've taken different launchers out for a spin. If, throughout your tinkering, you've found yourself chanting, "More. More. Give me more!" then now is the time. It's time to root.Rooting opens up a new realm of possibilities for your device. With a rooted device, you can install apps from Google Play that allow for even deeper customization. For example, apps like Hola let you unlock Netflix's full video catalog, and Rec. lets you record video of your screen. You can also flash custom ROMs (operating systems) like AOKP and Firefox OS that can completely change your Android experience, as well as install two totally different systems, and even mods like the LG G2 home launcher. If you've ever wondered how you can change the GPS icon in your status bar or add swipe gestures to the home screen, this is how you do it.The big 'R' word can be intimidating for first timers, but don't let it be! Rooting can be easy, and on a Nexus, it's even easier. Stick around and I'll show you how you can root your N5 with a quick download that does all the hard work for you. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
And don't worry, if you ever find out you don't like having a rooted device, unrooting your Nexus 5 is fairly easy.

Step 1: Enable USB DebuggingOn your Nexus head to Settings -> Developer options, then check the box marked USB debugging, which will allow your Windows PC to issue commands to your device. Images via wonderhowto.com If you don't see the Developer Options section, you're going to have to go to the About phone section in the Settings menu, scroll to the bottom, and tap on Build number repeatedly until you unlock it.

Step 2: Download CF-Auto-Root to Your Windows PCWe're going to use Android developer Chainfire's rooting tool CF-Auto-Root, which will do most of the heavy lifting for us. Take your computer's web browser to this link and download the .zip file from the bottom of the page. Extract the .zip file using an extractor like WinZip or WinRar. It's best to create a new folder for the files you're going to extract and extract them there.
Step 3: Boot Device into Bootloader ModePower down your N5 then boot into bootloader/fastboot mode by holding in the Volume Down and Power key at the same time. You should see a black screen with a picture of the Android mascot on his back.

Step 4: Launch CF-Auto-RootConnect your device to your PC with a micro USB cable. Now navigate to the folder where you unzipped the CF-Auto-Root file. While within the the folder, hold down the Shift key, right-click, then select Open command window here.In the command window type: root-windows.bat

Step 5: Follow the Given InstructionsThe command window will guide you the rest of the way. It will first attempt to unlock your bootloader, a necessary step for rooting.Be warned: if your bootloader is not already unlocked, this process will erase all the data on your device, essentially leaving you with the original factory settings. If you're not sure if your bootloader is locked or unlocked, simply take a look at your device. At the bottom it will either read: Lock State - Unlocked or Lock State - Locked. If you want to unlock your bootloader before continuing, check out my guide before moving forward. Image via wonderhowto.com Once you issue the command, all that's left to do is sit and watch the magic happen. Image via wonderhowto.com Your phone will reboot with a red Android logo. Congratulations and welcome aboard. You are now rooted. You can now download root-only apps as well as custom recoveries that you can use to customize your device beyond your wildest dreams. Check back soon for easy tutorials and for the fun to really begin.
TroubleshootingThe most common issue folks have is that the root-windows.bat command fails. If you run into this, it's most likely the result of not having the proper fastboot drivers for your N5. You could try installing the Universal Naked Driver; the latest one being Universal_Naked_Driver_0.73.zip.If you're having any problems, let me hear about it in the comments and I'll do my best to lend a hand.

How To: Use Your Smartphone to Check for Dead Batteries

How To: Use Your Smartphone to Check for Dead Batteries
We've all been there. Channel surfing lazily whilst reclining on the sofa—then all of a sudden, the remote stops working. Out of frustration, you hold the remote up higher, press the buttons harder, or maybe a even give it a good smack hoping that will fix it. Right around this time, you start to wonder if your trusty old remote has finally called it quits or if it's just a dead battery. But don't get up off the couch to go fumbling around for a pair of triple-A's just yet—because chances are, you have a perfectly suitable remote tester sitting in your pocket right now. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Smartphone Camera to the Rescue! To figure out what's wrong with your remote, pull out your smartphone and open the camera app. Point the TV remote towards the camera on your phone, then press and hold any button. If your remote is functioning properly, you should see a pinkish light near the tip of your remote when looking at it through your phone's display. If the light it emits is extremely faint and almost unnoticeable, it's probably time to replace the batteries in your remote. If no light is visible, there are a number of factors to consider. First, the batteries in your remote could be completely dead, or your remote might actually be broken. Secondly, remotes that use a Bluetooth or radio frequency signal will not have such a light. Finally, if you're trying this trick with a newer iPhone, you may have to switch to the front-facing camera to see the light on your remote.
Why It WorksMuch like ultraviolet light, infrared lies just outside of the color spectrum that is normally visible to the human eye. Remember Roy G. Biv from your grade school days? Well these "invisible" light frequencies would serve as bookends to that old adage.Your TV remote operates by flashing a series of infrared impulses toward a sensor on the front of your television—a sort of Morse Code that tells your big screen which channel it should tune to. Your smartphone's camera is not quite as discriminate as the human eye, so it can perceive these infrared bursts rather easily. Most high-end cameras and DSLRs have infrared filters these days, which help reduce noise in your photographs, but block out the light being emitted by your remote. The same goes for the rear-facing camera lens on newer-generation iPhones, which is why you'll have to use the seflie camera instead.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter to stay up to date on new web apps, as well as how-tos and news on anything tech.

News: Apple Just Released iOS 12.2 Beta 2 for iPhone to Developers, Includes Four New Animoji

On Monday, Feb. 4, Apple released the second developer beta for iOS 12.2. The update features bug fixes to users running iOS 12.2 beta 1, as well as four new Animoji for Face ID devices. Developers are strongly encouraged to update their iPhones. It's unclear at this time whether the update includes a fix for the Group FaceTime bug discovered last week. The main attraction for 12.2 dev beta 2 is the addition of four new Animoji — users can now choose from a giraffe, shark, boar, and owl on their iPhone X, XS, XS Max, or XR. In addition to the new Animoji, AT&T users in certain markets may see a new "5G E" symbol on their iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR. Don't be mistaken — there are currently no 5G networks for any smartphones to connect to in the US. Rather, this marks AT&T "5G Evolution" technology, a slightly speedier version of the 4G LTE we all know.Update: Apple's iOS 12.2 Developer Beta 3 Is Available to Install The update also contains a number of bug fixes, as well as some new and preexisting issues:Apple Pay Known IssuesYou might be unable to authenticate within Wallet after selecting a card.
