How To: Reclaim Up to 20 GB of Hard Drive Space After Installing Windows 10

Whether you're upgrading to the Windows 10 Insider Preview or the official build of the operating system, you'll notice a significant hit on hard drive space—up to 20 GB taken away from you. For those with older or even solid-state hard drives (SSDs), this can be a substantial hit.Luckily, there's a super easy way to reclaim some, or possibly all, of this space back, and it's done with Windows' built-in Disk Cleanup utility. To free up hard drive space, search for Disk Utility (or access it through the "Windows Administrative Tools" folder in the Start menu). From there, hit the option for "Clean up system files" and let Disk Cleanup relaunch. Now you'll see options in the "Files to delete" list for "Previous Windows installation(s)" and "Temporary Windows installation files." On my Windows 10 system, these two entries equaled 17 GB of space! Combine that with my very cluttered Recycle Bin, and I've now recovered over 21 GB of precious storage.Just note that by clearing these two entries, you will no longer be able to roll back to your previous version of Windows. So make sure it's something you want to do before actually doing it.Obviously, your mileage will vary with the amount of space you can clear, but in the end, you'll have more room for games, apps, videos, pictures... whatever have you.

How To: Increase Performance for Individual Apps on Your Galaxy S9

How To: Increase Performance for Individual Apps on Your Galaxy S9
Samsung's Galaxy S9 is a powerhouse, driven by the Snapdragon 845. Still, this SoC lags behind the A11 Bionic chip that's inside the iPhone X — meaning you'll need a few tricks in order to squeeze out some extra performance from your phone. Fortunately, there's an app made by Samsung that will help you do just that.Game Tuner is a Samsung-created app that helps performance across all Galaxy devices — including the Galaxy S9. Even though it's called Game Tuner, it can increase performance for any app installed on your phone, but it also has the ability to save battery life and generate heat — when used correctly.

Step 1: Download & Install Game TunerFirst, head to Google Play and search for "Game Tuner" or tap the link below. Hit "Install" to download and install the app, then open it up.Install Samsung's Game Tuner app for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Add Your Non-Game AppsBy default, your games will be added to Game Tuner, so you don't need to worry about adding those. To add your non-game apps, tap the tab that says "Non-Game Apps." Then, hit "Add/Remove Apps." A list of your third-party apps will appear before you, and you can tap any of them to add them to Game Tuner. When you've chosen a few apps, hit "Save" on the bottom.

Step 3: Choose a ModeYou can get really complicated with all types of modes, and there are no wrong answers here. Tap the "Modes" tab, and they'll all be listed in front of you. Game Tuner largely works by changing the screen resolution on a per-app basis, so your processor doesn't need to work as hard when rendering images."Maximum quality" won't change a thing. "Balanced quality" drops your screen resolution a bit to boost performance, and "Balanced power saving" drops it even more. I don't personally recommend "Maximum power saving," as it also decreases your frame-rate to 30 FPS (frames per second), which will appear stuttery and jarring. I actually really like the idea of the "Smart" settings, which will change the settings based on your battery life. Tap the mode you want, then hit "Save." Now you should be able to eek out that extra bit of performance on your Galaxy S9. You'll even be able to maintain that same level of performance when your battery starts to die with the "Smart" mode, and you don't even need to worry about keeping tabs on your apps. What apps are you planning to optimize? Are you excited to 'unlock' the power of your S9? News: Everything We Know About the Sony Xperia XZ4 So Far

News: Everything We Know About the Sony Xperia XZ4 So Far
Update February 25: The new Sony Xperia flagship has been announced, and it has a new name: The Sony Xperia 1. You can read all of the official specs and details at our full article on Sony's new model.Though not famous as the iPhone and Galaxy, Sony's Xperia line of devices have become the mainstay of many Android aficionados. And with the introduction of the XZ2, the famous company ditched the familiar, blocky design that its smartphones were known for, in favor a sleek, curvier appearance. This same design element has carried over to the XZ3, and will likely continue on with the upcoming XZ4.With the arrival of the XZ4, Sony will likely pull out all the stops in terms of design in the hopes of grabbing some of the market share from more dominant competitors like Samsung and Google. Compared to other upcoming releases like the Galaxy S10, however, details regarding the XZ4 have been few and far between. That said, here's what we have so far regarding the upcoming Xperia flagship.

Announcement & ReleaseSony has been pretty consistent with unveiling its flagship devices on a biannual basis, with the first phone entering the market around spring, followed by the second handset around fall. For reference, we only need to look back to the XZ4's predecessors, the Xperia XZ2 and XZ3, which were released on April 5 and October 5, respectively.Based on past Xperia releases, it was widely accepted that Sony would aim for an April announcement for the XZ4, as speculated on by sites like Digital Trends. We may be in for an early treat, however, as the latest flagship may be announced earlier than usual, if we go by a newly-surfaced leak.Japanese site Sumahoinfo has gotten its hands on a Russian invite for Sony's press event for MWC 2019 in Barcelona. The presentation, which is scheduled to take place on February 25, 2019 at 2:30 AM EST, has fueled much speculation, with sites like XperiaBlog wondering if the XZ4's announcement will be made around that time. Image by Sumahoinfo/Twitter

DisplayThe Xperia XZ3 was no slouch in the screen department, and boasted a 6 inch OLED display which put it on par with other flagship phones like the Galaxy S9. If a recent leak turns out to be true, Sony will take things up a notch — without actually implementing one — with the XZ4.Onleaks and MySmartPrice have recently released CAD-based renders of the Xperia XZ4, which gives us the best estimation yet of how the flagship will look. One of the most apparent features of the device is its tall screen, which MySmartPrice mentions as being 6.5 inches diagonally. And unlike a whole slew of devices that copied Apple's notch, Sony decided to buck the trend and forgo its use. Image by MySmartPrice/YouTube Because of its massive notch-less display, the Xperia XZ4 will have an impressive aspect ratio of 21:9. Despite this, however, the XZ4 is relatively compact, and measures of 6.57 x 2.85 x 0.32 inches, due in part to its thin bezel design. Image by Sumahoinfo/Twitter

CamerasIn a first for Sony, the upcoming XZ4 will sport a main camera that consists of three separate lenses and sensors. According to renders leaked by MySmartPrice and Onleaks, the triple camera system will be arranged vertically along the top-center of the device for a more symmetrical look. Image by MySmartPrice/YouTube Apparently, that's just the tip of the iceberg, as Sony plans to equip its upcoming flagship with the most advanced camera sensors to date, if new rumors are to be believed. According to Japanese site Sumahoinfo, the Xperia XZ4 triple camera system will center around a main shooter with an impressive 52 MP sensor.Sumahoinfo goes on to claim that the newest Xperia will utilize a 16 MP telephoto camera located at the top, along with a 0.3 MP Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor placed at the bottom to compliment its main camera. Image by Sumahoinfo/Twitter While we should take this seemingly outlandish rumor with a grain of salt, it's definitely worth considering, given Sony's vast experience with camera development and manufacturing. Keep in mind that the company is a major supplier of camera modules (think Sony Exmor) for other OEMs like Google, Samsung, and LG, just to name a few.

Will Come in at Least Two VariantsSonny's flagship XZ line usually comes in multiple variants, and the XZ4 will be no exception. As reported by CompreRaja and Onleaks, a compact model is in the works, and will feature a smaller 5-inch display along with a single rear camera unit. And if the renders provided by Onleaks prove to be accurate, the XZ4 Compact will also sport dual front speakers, but at the cost of thicker upper and lower bezels. The XZ4 Compact, note the thicker bezels. Image by CompareRaja/YouTube
Battery & Internal SpecsThe march towards ever larger batteries continues on with the Xperia XZ4, and according to recent leaks, Sony's flagship will pack a sizable punch battery-wise. TechnoBezz reports that the XZ4 will have a massive 4,400 mAh battery, which will be truly impressive if true, especially when you consider the battery size in relation to its 6.57 x 2.85 x 0.32-inch frame. As a flagship handset, it's widely believed that the Android 9.0 Pie-based Xperia XZ4 will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 855 SoC, along with 6 GB or RAM. In addition, the device will come standard with 128 GB of internal storage, and feature MicrSD card support for up to 512 GB of expandable memory.
PricingSo far, there's no concrete information about how much the Xperia XZ4 will cost. Based off the XZ3's $900 price tag, however, Digital Trends speculates that the XZ4 will roughly cost around the same price, so start saving now if you'd like to purchase or upgrade to this device. That's all the juicy tidbits we have so far about Sony's potentially game changing flagship. Of course, we'll continue to stay on the lookout for any new information that bubbles up to the surface, so be sure to check back often.Don't Miss: Here's How Much Money You Could Save by Switching to Google FiFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: 12 Important Privacy & Security Features Google Added to Android 9.0 Pie

News: 12 Important Privacy & Security Features Google Added to Android 9.0 Pie
We know Android 9.0 will have the formal designation of Pie, following Google's age-old tradition of naming their OS after items you'd normally find on a dessert menu. And thanks to a slew of new features that centers around your overall security, P could also stand for Privacy.Android Pie will bring several changes to normal operations. Certain actions will be prevented to ensure protection, and support for a few advancements in cybersecurity will be included, making the mobile OS better protected against new threats. Finally, when it comes to our phones, danger can also come from nearby, so Android 9.0 will introduce new privacy protections to guard against this threat.

1. HTTPS Is the Default for AppsBy default, Android Pie will request that apps use HTTPS connections instead of HTTP. With HTTPS, data is secured during transit using TLS encryption, making it nearly impossible to intercept any data traveling to or from your device. While Android 9.0 doesn't prevent HTTP usage for legacy compatibility issues, it does strongly encourage all apps to use it. For end users, apps built for the new version can provide peace of mind, as personally identifiable information (such as your name and login information) is secured by default.
2. Restoring Your Device Requires a PasscodeBackups in Android 9.0 Pie are now encrypted. Therefore, users must enter their device's PIN, pattern, or password before restoring their device. This is helpful for stolen devices where users may use the remote wipe feature to protect their data.Previous versions allowed a tech-savvy thief to potentially use the restoration (if they knew your login) to gain access to your data. However, with Android Pie adding an extra layer of security, no one will have access to your data unless they know your login and PIN. However, like with all security measures, it's a double-edged sword. If you forget your own password or PIN, you may not be able to restore your device.

3. Unified Fingerprint Authentication DialogMany apps use the fingerprint scanner as a way to speed up authentication into your account. Android Pie standardize the look, feel, and placement of the fingerprint authentication dialog. Therefore, all apps (whether system or third-party) will have a similar prompt for fingerprint usage, allowing for a more consistent experience.

4. Lockdown ModeAndroid Pie introduces a new option in the power menu. Known as "Lockdown Mode," it's not enabled by default, but it can easily be toggled on under Settings –> Security –> Lock screen preferences.Once you've enabled the option, just bring up the power menu by long-pressing the power button. From there, pressing "Enter lockdown" will disable the convenient and less secure authentication methods such as fingerprint scanning and Smart Lock. Therefore, the only way to unlock your device is with the PIN, pattern, gesture, or passcode.
5. Background Apps Won't Have Mic AccessAndroid Pie will also introduce a number of changes to normal operations to combat malicious agents such as hackers. One such change come in the form of blocking apps' access to the microphone while the app is running in the background.Initially discovered by XDA, when the app enters into an idle state, Android Pie's audio system will stop any further access to the microphone. If a malicious app requests it, Android will send it empty data.

6. Background Apps Won't Have Camera Access EitherAdditionally, the same protection provided to the microphone will be extended to the camera. According to XDA, when an app is idle, Android will generate an error message and stop access if it tries to use the camera.
7. Data Privacy for Other SensorsAndroid 9.0 Pie also includes new privacy changes to protect users against malicious use of the other sensors. As highlighted in our article, many of the other sensors included in our phones are quite dangerous when used incorrectly. It seems the Android team is aware of this and included several modifications to combat such threats. The biggest change is that Android Pie will prevent continuous reporting from sensors such as the accelerometer and gyroscope. It was possible in the previous versions of Android to use continuous reporting mode for a number of unintended usages, such as learning your current location, including accounting for any turns in your commute.Don't Miss: 6 Crazy Ways Your Phone Could Be Used to Spy on YouAndroid Pie will also prevent on-change or one-shot reporting modes in sensors. The on-change reporting mode reports to an app whenever a change in an action is detected by the sensor. An example would be using the accelerometer to detect a change in your speed. One-shot reporting mode reports back to an app when a specific event is detected, and will then deactivate the sensor. When the sensor deactivates, an app could theoretically collect the data it reported without detection. This is no longer the case in Android 9.0.When an app needs a sensor to remain on to detect an event, Android Pie is asking that developers use the foreground service, which keeps an active notification so users know exactly what the app is doing, including its usage of the sensor.
8. Alert Tone When Your Call Is Being RecordedIn cases where phones are able to record calls, Android Pie will play a tone every fifteen seconds, alerting the other party that they are being taped, according to XDA. The inclusion of this tone makes Android's call recording API more in line with some states' two-party consent laws, which require both parties to be aware of the recording for it to be legal.

9. DNS Over TLS & Private DNSAndroid 9.0 supports RFC 7858, commonly known as "DNS over TLS." The new protocol secures DNS queries by establishing an encrypted connection using TLS (the same protocol used for encrypted HTTPS connection). This protects your browsing history, as the name of the website you are visiting will also be protected using this encryption protocol.By default, if your network's DNS server supports the feature, your device will automatically use the new protocol. However, for those not wishing to wait for their network, you can now switch the default DNS server for all apps on your phone. Previously, the only way to switch your DNS server was to establish a VPN connection.
10. Protected Confirmation APIWhen you conduct a transaction that involves sensitive information, developers can now use the Protected Confirmation API to ensure users agreed to the transaction (and all that it entailed). Using the new API, developers display a prompt to the user which reaffirms the transaction. Once the user agrees to the prompt, the app will receive a cryptographic signature which provides high assurance that the user read the prompt and agreed to the transaction.
11. Hardware Security ModuleDevices launching with Android Pie can now support a feature called StrongBox Keymaster, which would reside in the hardware security module. Cryptographic keys can be checked within the module, which has a number of features to protect against tampering, including isolation from the rest of the hardware. This wouldn't affect most current phones, but it paves the way for heightened security in new devices that ship with Android P or higher preinstalled.

12. Improved Protection for Hardware Serial NumberAll smartphones include a unique serial number that remains on the device no matter what is done to the software. This unique ID is key for retrieving stolen phones, as this number stays the same no matter what others may try to do to it (including stealing it). However, as mentioned in our article, this can also be used by advertisers to identify you. Continuing from the protection built in Android 8.0 Oreo, Android Pie will set the hardware serial number to unknown, protecting against apps trying to access this information. It looks like Android 9.0 Pie is shaping up to be a true full-number update. With the expected visual changes known as Material Design 2, combined with the numerous modifications both under-the-hood and on the surface, users can expect Android Pie to a big step forward. From a security and privacy perspective, Android Pie will be the most secure version yet, helping to quell the arguments that when it comes to a secure phone, you should opt for an iPhone.Don't Miss: 44 Cool New Features & Changes In Android 9.0 PieFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Prevent Thieves from Turning Off Your Stolen Nexus So You Can Locate It

How To: Prevent Thieves from Turning Off Your Stolen Nexus So You Can Locate It
Back in August, Google introduced Android Device Manager. This new service allowed you to locate, lock, or wipe a lost or stolen Android device from either a companion app or a web interface. Effectively, this is the "kill switch" that legislators are clamoring for.So, as owners of a phone that came with this service pre-installed, we should be free of worry when it comes to losing our devices, right? Not so fast.A would-be thief could easily circumvent Device Manager by simply enabling airplane mode or turning off your phone. This would prevent the Device Manager service from connecting to the internet to upload its location data. Even with lock screen security enabled, these features can still be accessed.Follow these simple steps, though, and you can be sure that a potential Nexus thief would end up having to wait on your battery to die or for the police to arrive. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
What You'll NeedRooted Nexus 5 or other rooted Nexus device Xposed Framework Unknown Sources enabled

Step 1: Configure Location SettingsBefore getting ahead of ourselves, we'll need to ensure that Android Device Manager has all the permissions that it needs to function properly.First up, head to your phone's Settings and tap Location. In here, tap Mode at the top, then select High Accuracy (if it is not already selected). Next, tap Google Location Reporting at the bottom of this menu, then hit Location Reporting on the next screen. See to it that this toggle is set to On.

Step 2: Adjust Security SettingsIf you haven't already set up lock screen security, now is the time to do so. Not only could a potential thief have direct access to all of the data on your device without this, but they could easily disable Android Device Manager altogether if you leave your phone unsecured in this way. From your phone's Settings app again, tap Security. Hit the first entry, titled Screen Lock. In here, choose from Pattern, Pin, or Password to set up a screen lock. For this tutorial, I'll demonstrate using the PIN method. You'll be asked to enter your new lock screen Pattern, Pin, or Password here. When you've done that, tap OK, and you'll have to enter it again once more. To finalize this setting, hit Confirm. Next, scroll down and tap Device Administrators. The box next to Android Device Manager should already be ticked, but if not, tick it and hit Activate.

Step 3: Install Advanced Power MenuNow that you have lock screen security enabled and you've given Android Device Manager all of the permissions it needs, you should now make sure that a potential thief can't simply enable airplane mode or turn your phone off to circumvent your security measures. Thanks to a recent addition to the Advanced Power Menu Xposed module, this last loophole can be closed. The app's developer, kennethso168, has added an option to disable these power menu entries on the lock screen. From the Xposed Installer app, head into the Download section and search Advanced Power Menu. Tap the top result, then swipe over to the Versions tab and hit Download. You can also install the app directly from here. This will launch the installer, where you should hit Install. When that's finished, you'll see a new notification. Tap the Activate and reboot button here.

Step 4: Configure Advanced Power MenuOnce you're back up, open the newly-installed Advanced Power Menu app. Right up top are the options we're concerned with today. This interface provides other options for customizing your power menu, but I've covered these in Option #2 of this article if you'd like to check it out.First up, tick the box next to Anti-theft helper. This will open up three more options. Tick Hide ATH description and Remove volume state toggle here. Fake power off doesn't seem to work, so leave it unticked.

Step 5: Touring Your New Security MeasuresAt this point, your phone is now as secure as it can be—even in a thief's hands. A would-be thief can't unlock your phone due to the lock screen security you've added. He (or she) can't even turn the phone off or put it in airplane mode to circumvent Android Device Manager. And speaking of Device manager, you now know that it'll function properly when called upon. To locate, lock, or even wipe your phone, you can simply visit this link from any web browser (that's a good one to have in your bookmarks). There's even an Android app that you can use to access this service from a different Android device, which is available on Google Play. Doesn't that give you a little peace of mind? Which secure lock screen did you choose? Let us know in the comments section below.

How To: Automatically Delete Stored Site Cookies When You Close a Webpage in Firefox

As with most things on the Internet, browser cookies can be either helpful or harmful, depending on how they're used. On one hand, they make your experience more convenient by storing information about sites you use frequently. On the other, they can help companies track you across the web or cause your computer to be more vulnerable to attacks on public networks. It's easy to change your settings to disable cookies altogether, but that can cause certain elements on sites to load incorrectly, or not at all. That's where the Self-Destructing Cookies Firefox add-on comes in.Basically, it automatically deletes cookies when you close the page or tab that's using them. This gets rid of personal information stored in the cookies, and also logs you out of accounts when you close a page if you forget to do so. The add-on lets you set up a whitelist of sites you want to keep cookies for, and also gives you a short grace period so that if you accidentally close a tab, you can reopen it with everything intact. If you'd rather not use an add-on, you can do something similar right from Firefox's settings. Just go to Preferences and click on the Privacy Tab. Under History, choose Use custom settings for history from the drop-down menu. This will bring up several more options under the history settings. From the drop-down menu under Accept third-party cookies, you can choose to have Firefox delete your cookies each time you close the browser. You can also set up a whitelist by clicking on Exceptions, or delete individual cookies by clicking Show Cookies. This solution isn't exactly the same as the add-on, since it deletes cookies when you close the browser, not individual tabs, but if you don't like using add-ons, it's a decent compromise.Prefer the tabs approach? Give Self-Destructing Cookies a try. If you know of any other great add-ons for handling cookies, be sure to let us know in the comments.Cookies photo by crystalpen

How To: Resize Extremely Long "Open" & "Save" Dialog Boxes in Mac OS X Yosemite

How To: Resize Extremely Long "Open" & "Save" Dialog Boxes in Mac OS X Yosemite

Yosemite is definitely an improvement over Mavericks, but there are still some painfully obvious and annoying bugs that occur within certain apps. One such example is the elongated "Open" and "Save" dialog boxes, which sometimes stretch all the way down so that the "Open," "Save," and "Cancel" buttons are either completely offscreen or obfuscated by the Dock.If you don't know what I'm talking, just look at the example below, which happens in Google Chrome. I don't even need that much space, but thanks to the bug, I'm given it regardless. Hiding the Dock is a quick fix in this situation, but I've also experienced cases where the dialog box drops well below the bottom of the screen. It's worth noting that the Mac OS X 10.10.2 update (to be released soon) should fix many of the bugs in Yosemite (including this one... hopefully). If you're not down for waiting though, we've got a trick that'll help you resize some of those unreasonably large dialog windows on Yosemite.
The Terminal Commands You'll Be UsingUsing Terminal, you can change the sizes of the open and save dialog windows on a per-app basis. Below are the two commands you'll be using back to back, with "BundleID" being the placeholder for the specific app you'll be making changes to.defaults delete BundleID NSNavPanelExpandedSizeForOpenMode defaults delete BundleID NSNavPanelExpandedSizeForSaveMode

Step 1: Find the Bundle IdentifierBefore you enter any commands, you'll need to find the bundle identifier for the app in which you want to make changes. It's what you will be placing in the command to replace "BundleID."I'll be making changes to Chrome's dialog windows, since it happens most frequently to me in this app, but the process will be the same for all other apps. First find the app, right-click on it, and select "Show Package Contents." Go into the "Contents" folder and open "Info.plist" in TextEdit. Press CMD+F (find shortcut) and type in "CFBundleIdentifier," which will then appear highlighted in yellow. Beneath it you'll find the bundle ID, between <string> and </string>. Copy it.

Step 2: Enter Commands into TerminalNow that you have your bundle ID, replace "BundleID" in the two commands with it. Like I mentioned before, I'll be using Chrome's bundle ID, which is "com.google.Chrome":defaults delete com.google.Chrome NSNavPanelExpandedSizeForOpenMode defaults delete com.google.Chrome NSNavPanelExpandedSizeForSaveMode (Note: the large spaces seen in the above two commands are actually just one space each; the lines stretch to fill the width of this article.) After entering the commands, there should be a one or two second pause. Don't enter commands for the same app twice, as that will lead to an error.Below you can see the difference in the dialog window after successfully executing the Terminal command. Just as a warning, your dialog window might resize back to its enormous size if you manually resize them with your mouse after already entering the commands, so you'll need to re-enter them.Yes, I know how frustrating that is, but for now it's the only fix we have, aside from just using the "Escape" and "Enter" keys instead. Hopefully, Apple puts out a Yosemite update sooner than later to iron out all of the issues in the current OS, including this one.
