FaceTime 101: How to Change Your Caller ID to an Email Address or Your Phone Number

FaceTime 101: How to Change Your Caller ID to an Email Address or Your Phone Number
Whenever you make FaceTime audio or video calls from your iPhone, Apple automatically uses your phone number or Apple ID email address as the caller identification. So when someone that you're calling sees the incoming call, they'll see it's from your phone number. But what if you'd rather it be a different identifier? If your phone number or email address is already in the person's contact list, you'll likely only show up as "[Your Name] would like FaceTime" on their Mac or iOS device, so changing the caller ID in this instance isn't really necessary. However, if you're FaceTime calling someone fresh, they will instead see either your phone number or email address instead of your name.

Reasons You May Want to Update Your Caller IDIf your phone number has an odd area code or your email address isn't very indicative that you're the one asking for a FaceTime audio or video call, you may want to change the caller ID to an email address with your name in it so recipients won't reject your calls.Don't Miss: How to Take Live Photos of FaceTime Video Calls in iOS 11Also, if you have an iPhone for work and an iPad for home use only, you will probably want to make sure that your work iPhone is using your work phone number or email address and that your iPad at home is not. Contact showing up (left), unknown phone number (middle), and unknown email (right).

Setting Your FaceTime Caller ID on an iPhoneOn your iPhone, open up the Settings app, then tap on "FaceTime" to view its available preferences. In the FaceTime settings, you'll see a section called Caller ID, and only one from the list will be check marked. This is likely your iPhone's phone number, but could also be your Apple ID email address if you've never set up a phone number on the device. All you have to do is tap one of the other emails in the list to make it show up whenever you make a FaceTime call. As long as it's check-marked, you're good to go. You'll still be able to be reached by any of the check-marked items in the You Can Be Reached at FaceTime At list above it, only whenever you make a FaceTime call, they will see your Called ID choice, either on their screen right away when you call or in their call history in the Phone app (if they have you listed as a contact). If you'd like to add an email address for your Caller ID that you don't see in the list of selectable emails, you can learn how to add emails to FaceTime here.Don't Miss: How to Add or Remove FaceTime Email Addresses to Be Reached At on Your iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Turn Your HTC One into a Remote Control & TV Guide for Your Home Theater System

When the HTC One was announced, the fact that its IR transmitter was a side note more than a main feature made me dismiss it. When Samsung included one in the GS4, it became even less impressive. However, now that I actually have a One, I find that the "TV" app is way more than just one of Samsung's "S"-gimmicks.

Step 1: Set Up Your Service ProviderWhen you open the TV app, you'll be asked to select your country, ZIP code, and service provider. If you don't have cable or satellite, select Over the Air. If you have cable, you may need to verify by checking a channel. You'll then be asked to select which channels are included in your package, and to add streaming services. During this process you can favorite shows and channels.

Step 2: Configure Your Remote(s)The app doesn't automatically ask you to configure your remotes, so tap the remote icon on the top of the screen, between the power and search icons. You'll be asked to name your remote; you can have more than one, for different rooms, but only one service provider. Finally, select which components you will be controlling with this profile. To program a device, make sure it's turned off. Select your device's brand and you'll be asked to try some commands to make sure it has programmed the right code. You'll need to do this for each device you want to control. Tapping the power icon at the top of the main screen will get you power and input buttons, while tapping the remote will get you navigation, number, and DVR buttons.

Step 3: Personalize Your ExperienceIf you click "Recommend" on the main screen, you get many more options. You can search for TV shows and Movies by genre, search by sport, and view a traditional TV guide, where you can set favorites. There's even a social tab that probably won't get much use. It's interesting that HTC wants you to be able to find things to watch without knowing the channel, and that's one of my favorite parts. They'll most likely keep adding to this app, but for now it lets you control whatever you happen to be watching in any room in the house. What do you think of HTC's TV app? And if you've got any questions, ask away in the comments below, or in the forum.

How To: Change Your Profile Picture & Display Name for iMessage in iOS 13

How To: Change Your Profile Picture & Display Name for iMessage in iOS 13
For quite some time, popular messaging apps such WhatsApp and Skype have let you set a profile picture along with a display name to make you more instantly identifiable to loved ones and colleagues. Apple has finally caught up with this fad in iOS 13, so you can set a profile photo within iMessage to quickly view who's messaging you at a glance. The latest iOS not only lets you set photos as profile images, but it also gives you the ability to use custom Memojis and Animojis for more variety. Paired with the ability to set a display name, the app's new features will help ensure you stand out even more amongst contacts. These new features work no matter what iPhone model you have, as long as it supports iOS 13, it's good.Don't Miss: Download & Install iOS 13 on Your iPhone Right Now

Step 1: Access the iMessage Profile SettingsThere are two ways to access the options for your profile picture and name on iMessage — either through the Settings app or within the Messages app itself. For the Settings approach, select "Messages," then "Share Name and Photo." To set a profile within Messages, tap on the new ellipsis (•••) button at the top of the conversations view, then select "Edit Name and Photo" on the action sheet that appears at the bottom. From the Settings app (left) and within Messages itself (right).
Step 2: Change Your iMessage Display NameWhichever method you chose above, you'll now be able to change your name. It should already be whatever your name is associated with your Apple ID, but you can change the first and last name by deleting what's there and inputting your desired moniker instead. Note that you do not need both fields filled out, so you can have just a first or last name. You can also leave the name alone if you want to show the one that's already displayed.

Step 3: Change Your iMessage Profile PictureTap on the image that says "Edit" right next to your name to change your profile image. From there, you have multiple options to choose from:Edit Current Photo: Tap the photo already set as your profile image, tap "Edit Color," and apply a filter. Take New Photo: Hit the Camera button if you'd like to snap a new photo. Snap it, follow the on-screen prompts to center and scale the image, then hit "Choose." Choose Old Photo: Select "All Photos" to pick an image from albums in your Photos app, follow the on-screen prompts to center and scale the image, then hit "Choose." Choose Initials: Pick a monogram (your initials in a circle), then pick a color. Use Animoji or Memoji: Choose an Animoji or Memoji from the list under Animoji, strike a pose, snap your expression, follow the on-screen prompts to center and scale the image, hit "Choose," then select a background color. Note: if you came from the Settings app, you can only choose Animoji, not Memoji. Take New Memoji: Select the plus (+) button under Animoji to create a new Memoji. It's just like making a Memoji the regular way, but iOS 13 has more customization options than iOS 12 and under. Note: if you came from the Settings app, you cannot create new Memojis — it's available only from the Messages app. If you set a new or old photo for your profile, you can tap on it, just like when editing the old photo that was there, to get the "Edit Color" option to apply vivid filters. Also, if you set an Animoji or Memoji, you can tap it to bring up the "Edit Color" option to change the background shade. When completely done, hit "Done" in the upper right to save your profile image. If you're not satisfied, you can always back out with "Cancel." Changing a profile picture from the Settings app.

Step 4: Share Your iMessage Display Name & Profile PictureOnce you've changed both your display name and image, be sure to tap the toggle next to "Share Name and Photo" to turn it on, if not already enabled. By default, it's disabled. Besides that, select how you want your image and name automatically shared in the Share Automatically section.By default, "Anyone" is selected, so everyone who has iMessage will see your profile information. If you only want to share it with people in your Contacts list, check "Contacts Only" instead. The third option, "Always Ask," will display a permissions prompt within each conversation's thread, where you can select "Share" or hit the (x) to keep it hidden. Hit "Done" to exit the settings when ready. While your display name stays within the Messages app itself, your profile image applies across the board, so it will appear in other apps like Settings and App Store where your avatar is displayed.Don't Miss: 100+ Exciting New iOS 13 Features for iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Sync Camera Flashes on Multiple iPhones for Better Lighting in Your Photos

How To: Sync Camera Flashes on Multiple iPhones for Better Lighting in Your Photos

I've taken a few photography classes back in the day, so I'm pretty confident in my abilities with a DSLR, but my iPhone is a completely different story. Lighting makes all the difference, so unless you're outdoors in the sun, it's hard to take a good snapshot with a mobile. You have way more control with a DSLR, and in low light situations, you can always turn to your trusty external flash. Yes, the iPhone has a built-in LED flash, but it's just not the same as a high-speed xenon. You almost always get an overexposed image. There have been some iOS apps that help you connect external flashes to your iPhone, like iSyncFlash, but because speedlites are too fast for your iPhone's rolling shutter, you end up with light streaks or discoloration. Sometimes it works, but it's really a pain to even try.So, instead of trying to sync your external speedlites with your iPhone, why not sync other iPhone flashes with it instead? That's exactly what a new app called External Flash does (free for a limited time). It utilizes the flash of multiple iPhones synced via the same Wi-Fi network, and you can sync up to 16 devices at a time for absurdly bright pictures. More than likely, you won't have 16 devices, but if you have a friend or family member with an iPhone, that's good enough. Just make sure each iPhone has External Flash installed and you're ready. All you have to do is run the app on all of the devices, then choose the phone that's taking the photo, and then the ones that will act as flashes with the main camera. In my setup, I used two iPhone 5s for external flashes, and one iPhone 5 as the camera without the flash on, because a straight-on flash on a close subject will still overexpose your image. Check out the quick video below to see it in action. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Now, compare the overexposed image at the top of this article with the picture taken without any flashes (below, left) and the one taking with my tri-iPhone setup using External Flash (right). A lot better, right? I still need to play around with better positioning of the flashes and such, and I might eventually but a gel or something in front of the iPhone's flash that's taking the photo, so I still have some soft front light, but that's for another day...There is no External Flash app for Android or any other OS yet, but these will most like be pushed out in the near future, making it easier for this to work with what you've got.

How To: These Are the Slow-Mo Specs You Should Look for in Your Next Phone

How To: These Are the Slow-Mo Specs You Should Look for in Your Next Phone

Nowadays, our phones are capable of just more than 30 fps video. Phones like the Galaxy S10 can shoot 4K at 60 fps, even on the front camera. Slow motion functionality has recently started to appear on more and more devices — but as you may have noticed, the quality of the feature differs from phone to phone. There are a number of factors that come into play with slow motion. Specs that for the average users would be ignored while they take video in auto mode. But with slow motion, these specs are important to know. That because they dictate the performance of the slow motion video include how fast that action can be which you are slowing down. In addition, unlike regular video, it isn't the higher resolution is best as for some frame rates, there aren't any options when it comes to resolution.

Frame RateThe single most important thing to slow motion capture is frame rate. Slow motion videos are typically created by filming an object at anything beyond 30 fps (frames per second), then playing the footage back at 30 fps.For example, if you shot in 60 fps, then played the footage back at 30 fps, you would end up with 1/2-speed slow motion video. This differs from slowing 30 fps footage down to 1/2-speed in post-processing, as doing so would show each frame twice and effectively make the video 15 fps — whereas shooting in 60 fps and playing back at 30 fps would result in the same 1/2-speed video, but every frame would be a new image. So obviously, you want a camera with a higher frame rate. Often, this spec is called "shutter speed" when it applies to still photography instead of video, but it's the same concept. Look for a phone with at least 240 fps recording, ensuring you'll get 1/4-speed slow motion when played at 60 fps or 1/8 speed when played at 30 fps. However, some phones today can shoot as high as 960 fps (marketed as "super slow motion"), like the Galaxy S10 or Sony Xperia 1. A closeup of a camera shutter at varying shutter speeds. Image by The Slo Mo Guys/YouTube But to expand on the concept, shutter speed is the amount of time the digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light when capturing a photo or video. The faster the shutter speed, the less light reaches the sensor, requiring more external light to properly expose the source. This is why for super slow motion video (960 fps), it's critical that the source is well-lit.Depending on the lighting, you need to choose the right frame rate for the best experience. Ideally, you will usually want the super slow motion, but if lighting isn't adequate or you need to capture more than half a second (more on that later), you might want to use a different option.
ResolutionThe next important specification to be aware of is the resolution each slow motion setting will record in — for example, 240 fps at 720p. Recording your slow-mo clips at a higher resolution like 1080p will capture more detail and thus have better video quality. However, with the increased pixel depth comes larger file size, which can quickly exceed the capabilities of current smartphones.Phone processors have to be energy-efficient to make sure your battery can last all day, so they're usually not the most powerful. Processing every bit of information in a high-resolution video in real-time becomes an even harder job when you're asking the chip to render a full 2-megapixel photo 240 times every second. This is why most smartphones are limited to 120 fps when recording at 1080p.Currently, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is processor of choice for Android flagships in 2019. It's an "SoC," or System on a Chip, meaning it includes ancillary processors like the GPU and image signal processor (ISP) used in videography. While this is a top-of-the-line chip, it's limited to 120 fps at 1080p. It is capable of both 480 fps and 960 fps, but at 720p and only for a limited amount of time. This limitation is shared by both Apple's A series and Huawei's Kirin chipsets. Therefore, consider the medium you are sharing this video on. If your audience will be watching on a larger display such as a television, 720p won't look great with many having upgraded to 4K (2160p) models. However, for a more mobile audience, 720p won't look nearly as bad.

DurationWhile not a hardware spec, an important consideration for any slow-motion video is the duration of the event. As mentioned previously, our phones are not designed for super slow motion video. For iPhones users, slow-motion videos are limited to 1080p at 240 fps, which is all the A12 chipset is capable of capturing in real-time. Therefore, you can record at 1/8-speed up to the amount of internal storage you have. This is the same for most Android flagships, as well. But what about super slow motion? Only a handful of Android phones supports this feature, and in the US, it's limited to Sony and Samsung. Both companies use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 series SoC in their phones and are both therefore subject to the same limitations. Super Slow-Mo mode on the Galaxy S10 only allows for 0.4s and 0.8s recording, which just toggles between 960 and 480 fps recording, respectively. Currently, super slow motion video is made possible by taking advantage of the DRAM buffer. This buffer can temporarily store uncompressed video, which the phone initially uses for 480 and 960 fps videos. Once this buffer fills up, the video ends and the phone converts this to storable file on the internal storage. This buffer isn't that large. Uncompressed super slow motion quickly eats up this limited storage. As a result, on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (2018 flagships), you are limited to 0.4 seconds at 480 fps and 0.2 seconds at 960 fps, both of which are recorded at 720p. While the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 doubles both durations, we are still talking about less than one second of action.
StabilizationEven when the duration is limited, having a steady hand is key to capturing a great action video. While filming in slow motion, movement of the camera body isn't as noticeable compared to recording in 30 fps, but it can still ruin a video if the movement is too great. One counter to this is video stabilization. While optical image stabilization helps a bit, when it comes to video, the bigger factor is electronic image stabilization (EIS). With EIS systems, the phone detects motion from your hands and uses this data to re-center frames as they're being captured. It's a lot like using stabilization tools in video editors, but it's more effective and causes less distortion because it's working in direct response to movement from your hands captured by your phone's sensors. The problem is, many phones don't include this feature in their super slow motion modes. This means the only stabilization available is OIS, which again, isn't as effective for videos. So we strongly recommend using a tripod if you know you will be capturing a lot of super slow-motion videos, which will even help with regular speed videos.
ApertureFinally, there is aperture. Aperture represents the opening of the lens' diaphragm which lets lights pass through. Depicted as f-stop (e.g., f/2.2), a lower the number equals a larger aperture, which translates to more light being captured by the sensor.Because light is so crucial with slow-motion capture, having a phone with a large aperture will help in situations when lighting isn't the best. While the high shutter speed limits the amount of the light the sensor is exposed to, a higher aperture can help mitigate some of this by providing a larger opening each time the sensor opens. This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' special coverage on smartphone-based video creator tips for filming and editing. How To: Mute Individual Tabs in Chrome Without Leaving Your Current Tab

How To: Mute Individual Tabs in Chrome Without Leaving Your Current Tab
It's been over a year now since Google introduced a visual way to track down which tabs are playing audio in Chrome, something that was previously only available using third-party extensions. However, they still didn't give an easy option for shutting those tabs up without having to stop what you're doing.Whether it be an annoying ad, a video that started playing automatically, or even just music that you need momentarily silenced, you have to stop what you're doing, head to the tab with the speaker icon, then find and stop whatever's playing the audio. It would be much simpler if the speaker icon also included the functionality to let you mute the sound.Well, now it does—only it's not available by default. But I'll show you the trick to unlocking this little-known experimental feature in Google Chrome. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Navigate to Chrome FlagsChrome flags are essentially user-enabled features that aren't yet ready for prime time, whether they are unstable or simply not yet fully implemented into the browser. But just because they're not "everyday" features doesn't mean you can't access them.Simply type chrome://flags into the address bar to get started.

Step 2: Locate Tab Audio SettingSearch using Command F (or Control F on Windows) to locate the "Enable tab audio muting UI control" flag. Alternatively, you can just copy/paste chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting into your address bar to head directly to the flag.Click on "Enable" next to it and hit the "Relaunch Now" button that appears at the bottom to apply the changes in Chrome.

Step 3: Mute Your TabsTo mute a tab, simply click on the speaker icon. The icon will change to display a "universal no" on top of the speaker icon, and of course, you'll notice that the audio coming from that tab has stopped. Best of all, you don't have to leave the tab you're currently in to do this!

Step 4: Mute Multiple Tabs at OnceIf you have multiple tabs playing audio, you can silence them all simultaneously by holding down Command (or Control on Windows) and selecting each tab you want to mute. Then right-click on one of the selected tabs to open the contextual menu and select "Mute Tabs."The only problem with this trick is that you have to leave the current tab you're in to select each tab you want to mute, which could be a little slower than just clicking on the speaker icon for each one separately. Hopefully audio muting will become a default in Chrome just like the original audio indicator did, but if not, at least you now know how to enable it yourself (and share the trick with friends).
