How To: Sync Your Android Clipboard with Windows (& Vice Versa)
Pushbullet is one of those apps that helps separate Android from its competition. By pushing the boundaries of cross-platform data syncing and file sharing, the service truly demonstrates how flexible and robust the world's leading mobile operating system can be.It seems as though each version bump that Pushbullet receives brings in awesome new functionality. This week's update is no exception—the latest killer feature enables cross-device clipboard syncing. As soon as you copy something on one device, you can paste it directly into a text field on another. This even includes Pushbullet's Windows program, so your digital world has never been more interconnected. If you use two-step authentication for extra password security, you'll definitely want to get this one set up on your devices. Imagine receiving the code on your phone, copying it, then immediately pasting it into the field on your PC. The possibilities don't stop there, as the clipboard syncing will even work on multiple Android devices, so you can even share clipboard content between your phone and tablet. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Pushbullet for AndroidEven though Pushbullet has branched out to add support for Windows, iOS, Chrome and Firefox, it's still an Android app at heart. If you don't already have it on your device, here's the Google Play link.

Step 2: Configure Pushbullet for AndroidWhen you first launch the app, you'll be asked to log into your Google account. This is because Pushbullet uses the Google Cloud Messaging platform to send data between devices. So tap your Google account on the first menu, then press OK on the second. After that, you'll be asked if you'd like to turn on Pushbullet's notification mirroring service. This feature will display notifications from your Android device on other connected devices, and while that's an awesome feature, it is not required for the purposes of this tutorial. When you've arrived at Pushbullet's main screen, press the three-dot menu button and choose Settings. Next, tap the Advanced Settings entry on the following screen. From here, simply toggle the Universal Copy & Paste option to On, and you'll be finished with setup on this device. You can repeat this process for any other Android device that you'd like to share clipboards with.

Step 3: Install Pushbullet for WindowsIn order to sync your Android's clipboard with the one on your PC, you'll have to install Pushbullet on your Windows device. From your PC's web browser, click here to download the latest Windows (beta) version; the download should begin automatically, and when it's finished, simply launch the installer file. Click Run on the next screen, then, depending on your setup, you may have to enter an administrator password to proceed. From there, just follow the prompts for installation, leaving any options set to their default values. When installation is complete, Pushbullet will automatically launch. From the window that appears, click Log in with Google. A browser window will open, and from here, just enter your Google credentials. After that, simply click the Accept button, and Pushbullet will begin syncing right away. To ensure that clipboard syncing is active on your Windows PC, open the system tray and right-click the Pushbullet icon, then select Settings. From here, make sure that the Universal Copy & Paste option is ticked, and you should be all set. Now, any time you copy text on one of your devices, the contents of that clipboard will be immediately synced to your other devices. Just hit paste on the target device, and your text will be automatically populated. How has this new functionality improved your experience on your various devices? Let us know in the comments section below.

To provide good graphical qualities on devices with different pixel densities, you should provide multiple versions of each bitmap in your app—one for each density bucket, at a corresponding resolution. Otherwise, Android must scale your bitmap so it occupies the same visible space on each screen, resulting in scaling artifacts such as blurring.

How To: Increase Battery Life on Your Samsung Galaxy S5 for More Power Every Day

How To: Increase Battery Life on Your Samsung Galaxy S5 for More Power Every Day

There's a 2800mAh battery powering the Samsung Galaxy S5, but even it's no match for the constant day-to-day torture you put it through. Taking photos, watching videos, and playing games can make your fully charged S5 powerless in no time. While there are some features built-in to help you better manage battery life, most of them aren't very obvious, so let's go over them one by one and get your rapid-draining battery back up to snuff.

Tip #1: Lower the Screen BrightnessThe leading culprit for rapid battery loss is the brightness of your screen. With a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and 432 pixels per inch, the Galaxy S5 packs a brilliant, albeit power-hungry punch. When you don't need an extremely bright screen, simply lower the brightness. Additionally, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, you can enable the Automatic brightness feature, which uses the ambient light sensor in your device to automatically adjust the screen's brightness. If you're not spending the majority of your day outside, it's better to keep a lower brightness set, and adjust up for those times that you need it.You can access these settings by swiping down on the status bar, or by going to Settings -> Display -> Brightness. Also found in the Display settings is the Auto adjust screen tone feature, which saves power by adjusting the display brightness based on an analysis of images on your screen.

Tip #2: Adjust the Screen Timeout IntervalWhile still in the Display section, Screen timeout can be configured to a lower interval for when your idle screen turns off. Use shorter timeouts—15 or 30 seconds—because the longer your screen stays on, the more juice it consumes.

Tip #3: Control Your Data & Wi-Fi UsageWhen in an area that has strong Wi-Fi, take advantage! Using Wi-Fi will drain your battery significantly less than using your carrier's data. Alternatively, turn off Wi-Fi when you're not in an area with an available connection, thus preventing your device from checking for available networks and wasting battery. If you don't want to turn Wi-Fi off completely, tap on the three-dot menu in Wi-Fi settings and head over to the Advanced page. For best results, keep Always allow scanning enabled, as this can be used for location data instead of GPS, which wastes even more battery. You can also choose when to keep Wi-Fi on during sleep and whether or not you want Google Location Services to scan for hotspots, even when Wi-Fi is off. Select either Only when plugged in or Never for when you want to keep Wi-Fi on during sleep. Furthermore, if you're in an area that doesn't have great data connection or available Wi-Fi networks, turn them both off. When you have bad data connection, your phone will continuously try and connect in the background, wasting an absurd amount of battery.

Tip #4: Use Airplane Mode When NecessaryTo turn off data, W-iFi, and Bluetooth all at the same time, simply pull down at the status bar menu with two fingers and put it your device into Airplane mode.

Tip #5: Turn Off Location ServicesWhile location services are useful for navigating through unfamiliar streets, finding local restaurants, or checking into Facebook and Instagram, they don't always have to be on.From Settings -> Location, tap on Mode and enable the Power saving locating method, which uses WiFi and mobile networks to estimate your location without using GPS. In this same menu, you can also see which applications use the most battery with their location services. To disable location services for a specific app, go to its own settings and disable or uncheck location services. In the screenshot below, you can see that Twitter has a built-in setting to turn off location.

Tip #6: Disable Bluetooth & NFCBluetooth and NFC are useful for connecting to other devices in order to share music, pictures, videos, and more, but since these are mostly used for specific periods of time, why have them on throughout the day? To minimize battery drain, turn off Bluetooth and NFC when you're not using them. You can find Bluetooth and NFC in Settings, or access them from the toggle menu by swiping down on the status bar with two fingers and long-pressing their respective icons.

Tip #7: Use a Black Wallpaper & Leave Out Live WallpapersYour Galaxy S5 comes with an AMOLED screen, meaning it doesn't have a solid backlight. Instead, each pixel produces its own light. If the pixel is white, it produces light. If it's black, no light is emitted. So what does this mean for you?If you place a black background on an AMOLED display, less light will be produced, thus saving battery on your device. Live wallpapers are on the other end of the spectrum when it comes to saving battery, so steer clear if you don't want your battery drained at a much more rapid pace. They not only keep your display active, but can use quite a bit of processing power.

Tip #8: Take Control of Your WidgetsWidgets sort of work as standalone apps that are always on, often updating in the background in order to serve up the latest news, weather, and notifications. It only makes sense that the more widgets you have on your device, the quicker your battery drains.Limit your widgets to only the ones you really need, and adjust the settings for each one, which you can usually access by tapping on the widget or opening up the full app. You'll be able to change the rate at which they update automatically, if at all.

Tip #9: Keep Your Apps Up to DateApp updates help fix bugs, as well as improve any issues that an app might have. These issues can sometimes lead to battery drain, so always make sure to keep your apps updated. From the Google Play app, go to My apps and update all of the ones that need it. You can also set apps to auto update in Settings -> Auto-update apps -> Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only.

Tip #10: Check for Rogue AppsThe Android system does a great job at monitoring for malicious apps, but some can slip through the cracks. In Settings -> Battery, you can check battery usage for individual apps and processes. If you see an app that is using more battery than normal, tap on it to either report it, or force-stop and uninstall it.

Tip #11: Pay for the Apps That You Use a LotThis might sound strange, but paying for applications could help you save battery. If you're using a free app that has a paid version, it mostly likely has ads. According to New Scientist, up to 75% of the energy used by these free ad-supported Android apps is spent serving up ads or tracking and uploading user data. Image via wonderhowto.com So, if you're using one of these free ad-supported apps quite often, why not shell out a few extra dollars for the pro version? You'll not only help the developer, you'll probably get more features and save battery life in the process. Alternatively, you can always try removing ads from certain apps manually.

Tip #12: Use a Wearable DeviceIf you own any of the Samsung Galaxy Gear watches compatible with the S5, you could use them to check your notifications, look at the time, and just keep your phone's display off altogether—saving battery in the process. Of course, then you have to worry about your Gear's battery life, but it makes much more sense to have a dead wearable than a dead phone. Image via wonderhowto.com

Tip #13: Enable Ultra Power Saving ModeFinally, in dire times where you need to squeeze out those last few precious minutes of battery life, you have the option of putting the phone into battery saving mode. The Galaxy S5 comes with two options—Power saving mode and Ultra power saving mode.Power saving mode restricts background data, limits performance, and turns off several other battery-sucking features. While it works great, Samsung has upped the ante with Ultra power saving mode. This feature is great for those times when you have very little life left, but just need your device to stay on for basic functions like calling and texting. It will turn your screen grayscale, with an altered and minimal interface. You'll be limited to only a few apps (Internet, Messages, Phone, etc.), but you can bet that your S5 will last much longer than usual.
Other Tips You Should Try OutAs with most Android phones, there are universal tips that you can follow to help your battery drain problems on your device.Uninstall unused apps (they may be running in the background). Turn off haptic feedback (consumes battery with each vibration). Configure how often an app syncs in the background. Turn off voice services like S Voice. Clear notifications to turn off the blinking LED. Use the AC adapter when near an outlet. Update your firmware when available (newer versions will better optimize your battery power). Are there any other tips that have helped you save battery on your Galaxy S5? Let us know in the comments below.

How To: Install a Custom Recovery on Your Bootloader-Locked Galaxy S5 (AT&T or Verizon)

How To: Install a Custom Recovery on Your Bootloader-Locked Galaxy S5 (AT&T or Verizon)
As the largest wireless service providers in the United States, AT&T and Verizon Wireless carry some serious clout. Sadly, they use some of this power to heavily modify the Android phones that they offer. While smaller carriers like Sprint or T-Mobile are happy to just have the phones made available to them by the manufacturers, AT&T and Verizon have enough say-so in the mobile industry that they can operate against the best wishes of the manufacturers and alter the software on the phones to fit their corporate interests. One such modification that they've made to their Samsung Galaxy S5 variants was to add an extra layer of security to the Android bootloader. This wasn't done to prevent malware or anything else like that—it was done specifically to prevent you from being able to modify the software on your own phone. You see, if AT&T or Verizon allowed you to unlock your bootloader like every other carrier does, you'd be able to install a custom recovery and could then utilize software that wasn't customized to fit the carrier's goals of selling you extra services. But the Android development community rarely takes "you can't do that" for an answer. While a method to unlock the bootloaders of the G900A and G900V variants of the Galaxy S5 has yet to be discovered, a workaround has finally been found.Developer Hashcode has ported his Safestrap Recovery tool to the GS5, effectively bringing a custom recovery to the AT&T and Verizon variants. So if you've ever wanted to flash ZIPs, create a NANDroid backup, or even install a custom ROM on your G900A or G900V, this one's for you. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
For those of you with International, Sprint, or T-Mobile devices, check out my previous guide on installing a custom recovery called Philz Touch.
Step 1: Knock Out the PrerequisitesInstalling Hashcode's Safestrap Recovery is actually pretty easy. The bulk of the work will be ensuring that you have all of your ducks in a row beforehand.
SD Card RequiredSafestrap stores all of its data on your external SD card, and there's no way to change this location. Because of this, you'll need to have an external SD card plugged into your Galaxy S5.If you don't already have an SD card in your GS5, you can pick one up from most electronics retailers for less than $20.

Ensure That You're Running the Latest FirmwareNext, you'll need to be sure that your phone is running the latest firmware. To see if that is indeed the case, just open up Settings, then head to About Device. From here, tap Software update, then hit Check for Updates. Follow the prompts to bring your phone's firmware up to date if it isn't already.

Enable "Unknown Sources"Once you're certain that you're running the latest firmware, make sure that your phone is set to allow installation of apps from Unknown Sources. If you're unfamiliar with this setting, Nelson has a great guide on that topic available here.
Root RequiredThe Safestrap installer app utilizes Superuser privileges to install Safestrap Recovery. As such, you'll need to be rooted to take advantage of all that custom recovery has to offer.Rooting an Android phone has never been easier than it is right now. Just follow my guide on the Towelroot method, and you can be rooted in under a minute.

Install the BusyBox CommandsBusyBox is a set of Superuser commands that extend the capabilities of root apps on your Android phone. There is a great app from developer Stephen Ericson that will allow you to install these commands on your device, and it's available for free on Google Play.Search BusyBox to get the app installed, or use this link to jump directly to the install page. To install the actual BusyBox commands, start by opening the BusyBox app and granting it root access. From here, just close out any messages that may appear, then hit the Install button at the bottom of the screen. With that out of the way, you're ready to install Safestrap (don't worry, it's all downhill from here).

Step 2: Download the Safestrap Installer App for Your VariantNext, you'll need to download the Safestrap installer app for your particular variant. It's very important that you download the correct app for your device. If you have an AT&T variant of the Galaxy S5 (model number G900A), use this link to download the Safestrap installer for your phone. If you have a Verizon variant of the Galaxy S5 (model number G900V), use this link to download the Safestrap installer for your phone.Once the installer file has finished downloading, simply tap the Download Complete notification to begin installation. Press Install on the next screen, then when that's finished, tap Open.

Step 3: Install Safestrap RecoveryWhen you first launch the Safestrap installer app, it will ask for Superuser privileges, so Grant it those. After that, a disclaimer will appear, so hit Agree. Next up is installing the actual Safestrap Recovery image. Simply tap Install Recovery from the main menu, and after a few seconds, you'll have a custom recovery on your device. It's probably best to keep this app installed on your device, although it's not required. In the future, if you'd like to update to a more recent version of Safestrap recovery, you'll have to head back into this app and press Uninstall Recovery before you can install the newer version.

Step 4: Boot into RecoveryWhen you're ready to try out your new custom recovery, start by rebooting your phone just like you would normally. If you'll notice, there's a new menu that appears just after the Samsung Galaxy S5: Powered by Android screen. It's at this menu where you are given a chance to boot into Safestrap. Just tap the Recovery button at the bottom of the screen, and your custom recovery should come right up. If you don't interact with this screen, your phone will simply continue to boot into Android, so you can basically forget this menu exists until you need it.Note that you can also boot into Safestrap from the installer app's Reboot to Recovery option.

Step 5: Make a Backup of Your Existing SetupBefore you get too far ahead of yourself with all of the ZIPs and cool mods that your new recovery will enable you to install, the first thing you should do is create a backup of your existing setup. That's easy enough, though. Just tap the Backup button from Safestrap's main menu, then swipe the slider at the bottom of the next screen to create a backup. The process will take about 5 or 10 minutes to complete, but when it's done, you'll have a restore point to use in case anything were to ever go awry. A nandroid backup such as the one you've just made is an exact copy of the Android system, including apps you've installed and their data.Note that, at this time, the ROM Slots options do not work. Normally, it's a great feature of Safestrap that allows you to install multiple simultaneous instances of custom ROMs, but we'll have to wait on a newer version of the recovery before using this feature. Those prerequisites were a beast, I know. But we are now free to use our own devices as we see fit—take that, AT&T and Verizon. What's the first thing you flashed with your new custom recovery? Let us know in the comments section below.

How To: Fix Play Store Uncertified Errors When You Forget to Flash Magisk

How To: Fix Play Store Uncertified Errors When You Forget to Flash Magisk
When it comes to customizing Android, there's no better way to make it your own than by installing a custom ROM. You gain new features that were not accessible on the stock firmware that came with the phone, and you get complete control over how your system looks and feels. But there's definitely a learning curve. One big issue with ROMs is that Google requires your device to pass their SafetyNet certification check so you can install certain apps and updates from the Play Store. You can get around this using Magisk, but if you boot up your phone before you flash Magisk with a custom ROM, you'll get the dreaded "Device is uncertified" error when you check in the Play Store app's settings.Since Magisk was absent from your system during the initial check, you basically tripped a flag to catch the uncertified label. This is why it's a good practice to flash Magisk immediately after flashing your ROM — but if you forgot, there's a super simple way to remedy this minor issue.
Requirementsrooted Android device TWRP installed Magisk installed

Step 1: Boot into Custom Recovery (If Needed)If you already flashed Magisk once you realized your Play Store was uncertified, you can skip ahead to Step 3. But if you still haven't flashed Magisk, you'll need to do that at this time. To start, boot your phone into custom recovery. There's more than one way to get your device into recovery mode, so you can pick whichever method works best for you. A universal way to achieve this across all devices is from your bootloader menu — you can use the volume rocker keys to highlight "Recovery mode," then confirm it with the power button to boot into TWRP.

Step 2: Flash Magisk to Your System (If Needed)Now that you're on the main menu of TWRP, navigate to "Install," then to the folder when your Magisk file is stored. Tap that file, then "Swipe to confirm Flash" to install it onto your system. Once Magisk is finished installing, you can tap "Reboot System." Since you've installed a custom ROM and are reading this guide now, this step should be nothing new for you because you simply forgot to flash Magisk.

Step 3: Clear Play Store DataNow that you're back up and running, you'll want to head into your system settings and locate the section where you can manage your installed apps. A general location you might find this would be in the example as follows: Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps Alternatively, from the main settings screen, you should be able to search through all of your system settings by entering some text. Tap the search box and type in "app info," then tap the section that pops up to get to the same page quickly. It may be located or labeled differently depending on which ROM you have, but look for something related to "apps installed" or managing your installed apps. If you're running a newer version of Android, you can see the apps that were recently opened for quick access. If the Play Store wasn't recently accessed, tap the "See all apps" section and locate the "Google Play Store" on that list. Once you tap the appropriate listing, head into the "Storage" section, then tap the "Clear Storage" button. A message will pop up letting you know the Play Store data will be wiped clean, then tap the "OK" button to confirm it. Since there's not much to set up on the Play Store, clearing the data won't be an issue if you have to do it frequently. Once you've cleared the data successfully, go ahead and restart your phone before proceeding to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Step 4: Verify Your SafetyNet StatusHead into the Magisk Manager app, then use the "Tap to start SafetyNet check" option. You'll have to download a quick extension that Magisk needs to initiate the SafetyNet check. Tap "Yes" to confirm it, and within a few short seconds, you should see the "SafetyNet Check Success" message if all went well when you installed Magisk earlier. If the SafetyNet check fails for any reason, see our guide on fixing errors like "CTS Profile Mismatch."

Step 5: Verify Your Play Store StatusGoing back and installing Magisk without wiping the Play Store data is not enough since the Play Store already checked to see if your device was tripping the SafetyNet flag upon initial setup. It would stay flagged as uncertified until you clear the Play Store data, which some people might not have known otherwise. Now that you know your device is successfully passing the SafetyNet check, it most undoubtedly is also passing the Play Store certification check as well.Head into the Play Store, tap the menu on the left, and go into "Settings." Scroll down to the "About" section, and your device should now show the "Device is certified" message under the "Play Protect certification" section. That's it! Now you're all certified once again and can stay protected and receive all updates like usual from here on out. How To: Upload Your Photos to InstagramWithout an Android or Apple Device

Instagram allows us to vicariously live through others, experiencing their moments with them. It's an enormously popular application and has already garnered 100 million users, but it has only been made available for download on Android and Apple devices. Sure, there are third-party apps where you can browse, like, and comment on other people's Instagram photos—but they don't give you a way to upload your own pictures. So, what about all of the other people who want to share their lives, but don't have an Apple or Android device?Well, that's where a new program called Bluestacks comes in. Bluestacks is an "app player" that lets you use mobile apps on your Mac or PC. Once you've installed it, you can use your computer to run apps like Angry Birds, Pulse News, and, you guessed it—Instagram.First, you need the download the application. Install the software, click the search button, and find Instagram. Image via cbsistatic.com From there, all you have to do is log on. To upload a picture, click on the Polaroid icon on the bottom-right corner of the app. Image via cbsistatic.com Now, you too can use Instagram without having to conform with Android or Apple. Some people just prefer to have other phones and this is a less costly alternative to buying a device that can use Instagram. Cheat the system, man.

How To: The 5 Best Phones for Video Chat

How To: The 5 Best Phones for Video Chat

Video chatting has become an important factor in the overall smartphone experience. Even just a few years ago, 37% of teens were making video calls on a regular basis, and that number has surely grown. 85% of households with infants have used video chat apps to call relatives in other cities, and it's been shown that toddlers can create bonds and learn from visual cues in video calls. With more and more people using services like FaceTime, Skype, and Google Duo, the video calling experience that a phone provides has become a significant consideration. So if you're in the market for a new device, we tested all of the key hardware and software elements in current-generation smartphones to see which ones performed the best when it came to video calling. Note: Speaker Loudness and Battery Life data sourced from Phone Arena. Don't Miss: The 3 Best Gaming Phones Ranked
Key Testing PointsTo whittle down this list to the top five phones, we set up a few ground rules. First, the phones had to be current-generation models available for sale from retailers in the United States. Secondly, we only considered phones with a screen size greater than five inches, as this ensured that you won't have to squint to see the other party on your video call. That left us with the five phones in this list, in addition to the OnePlus 3 and the LG G5. However, since OnePlus and LG have both since released newer flagships in the OnePlus 3T and LG V20, we opted to focus on the newer models instead. From there, some of the most important factors were:Front-facing camera quality: A wide-angle lens on the front-facing camera is a big plus, since you want to share as much of the scene as possible when video chatting. A higher resolution selfie shooter is better, as it offers improved contrast and picture quality. Battery life: As with all things smartphone-related, battery life is one of the most important factors for video calling. The streaming data, graphics processing, and full-screen video demanded by video chat apps make it to where you almost need a phone with great battery life. Speaker quality and placement: A loud speaker is important here, so we checked decibel output as well as speaker placement. Front-facing speakers provide the most immersive experience, while rear-firing speakers make it hard to hear the other party. Phones that use a combination of front- and bottom-firing speakers are easier to hear than those that only have bottom-firing speakers. Camera and button placement: For longer video calls, you'll probably want to prop your phone up in landscape mode. If the front-facing camera is on the opposite side from the device's power button, you'll have to worry about the screen turning itself off, as this button will be resting on the table. Ideally, the phone's front-facing camera, as well as its power and volume buttons, would be on the same side. Overheating: Video calling is one of the most processor-intensive things you can do with your phone, so we made sure that none of the devices in this list suffered from overheating issues that could bog down performance during longer chats. Two phones got a little warm, but nothing too crazy, and performance remained fluid. Video chat app availability: This is an important category when picking the best phone for video calls, but a lot of it will come down to who you plan to chat with. To explain that last one a bit further, FaceTime is only available on the iPhone, for example, but that can be a positive or a negative. If you only plan to call other people who use Apple products, a phone that supports FaceTime should be one of your top priorities, as our testing found that FaceTime offered the best video quality out of all major apps (note that this can vary depending on factors like reception and internet speeds), and it's one of the simplest video chatting apps to configure and use. However, at 250 million users, FaceTime has a relatively small user base when compared to cross-platform apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, which both boast over a billion users. Since Apple devices only make up 43.5% of the US smartphone market but only 12.5% of the global market, it's plenty possible that more than half of your contacts will not be able to use FaceTime with you.WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Hangouts—all apps that have over a billion users—are available for every phone in this list. Skype has 300 million users and is also a cross-platform app. So if you just want access to one of these services, any phone listed here will do the trick. Finally, Google Duo is worth a mention, even though it's the newest app we considered. Duo will be preinstalled as a first-party app on all Android devices going forward, similar to the iPhone's FaceTime situation. In fact, Duo is quite similar to FaceTime in a number of ways, including simple setup, ease of use, and top-notch video quality. However, unlike FaceTime, Duo is available for both Android and iOS—though note that the Knock Knock video preview feature is only available for Android devices.

1. iPhone 7 PlusApple's iPhone is the single most popular smartphone model in the world, and sales of the larger Plus model continue to grow. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that the iPhone 7 Plus, with its gorgeous 5.5-inch screen and ample 2,900 mAh battery, tops our list of best phones for video calling. The iPhone 7 Plus tops our list of best phones for video chat. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks The main advantage of the iPhone 7 Plus is its compatibility with FaceTime, which is a video chatting app that is only available for Apple devices. Not only is it one of the most-used video chatting services, but FaceTime also offers the best picture quality of any mobile video calling app we tested. So if you want the overall best experience with video calling on your next phone, get the iPhone 7 Plus, use FaceTime, and don't look back. However, do note that since FaceTime is only available on Apple devices, so you won't be able to use it to video call your friends who use Android phones or Windows computers.Aside from app support, the iPhone 7 Plus is our top recommendation for a number of reasons. For starters, its front-facing camera may not have the highest resolution, nor is it particularly wide-angled, but it produces a sharp, clear image with accurate colors. There's something to be said about Apple's hardware optimization, because real-world camera performance is absolutely top-notch.Beyond that, the iPhone 7 Plus has the best battery life of any phone in this list, so you won't need to be tethered to a charger in order to make a long video call. Additionally, it's the only device in this list that sports stereo speakers (one of which is front-facing for clear sound in video chat), and the speakers themselves are louder than any of its peers (77.4 dB). There are a few minor downsides to consider, though. The iPhone 7 Plus doesn't always handle the transition between Wi-Fi and mobile data well—with or without Wi-Fi Assist toggled on in the settings—leaving you with a blank screen in apps like Facebook Messenger and Hangouts if you decide to head outside during a video call. However, in some cases, the transition can be fast enough that it's hardly even noticeable, so it's not always a factor.Aside from that, button placement isn't the greatest. While the volume rocker is on the same side as the selfie camera, the power button is directly opposite, so you might have to worry about the occasional accidental button press while video chatting in landscape mode. However, the power button is pretty sturdy, so accidental button presses should be few and far between.Don't Miss:The Best Accessories to Buy for Your Headphones Jack-Less iPhone 7You might also run into trouble with the iPhone 7 Plus's headphone situation. Bluetooth is supported, and a pair of Lightning cable EarPods are included with the phone, but it's the only device in this list that does not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, so selection is limited. To be fair, it does come with a Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter, but all of this can be avoided with the iPhone 6s Plus, though, then you'd be buying a year-old phone. The only other downside is that the iPhone 7 Plus does not support Google Duo's Knock Knock feature, so when you receive a call from a friend who uses this service, you won't get a sneak peak of their video feed before you answer.

2. OnePlus 3TAs far as Android devices go, the OnePlus 3T was our favorite video chatting phone. OnePlus is a newer smartphone manufacturer that's been making waves in the industry by offering flagship-level performance at midrange prices. They're able to accomplish this by only selling their devices online to cut costs on distribution, and by other thrifty tactics such as keeping a lean corporate structure and relying on word of mouth instead of costly advertising campaigns. The OnePlus 3T really shines when it comes to video calling. Image by Kevin M./Gadget Hacks The OnePlus 3T's standout feature is its selfie camera—coming in at a whopping 16 megapixels, it sports the highest-resolution front-facing camera of all the phones we tested. And while its wide-angle lens may not be the widest on the market, it still captures more of the scene than the iPhone or Pixel XL.With the exception of Apple's FaceTime, the OnePlus 3T supports all major video calling apps, so selection isn't really a problem. When using these apps, you can seamlessly transition between Wi-Fi and mobile data, so video calling while out and about is a fluid experience. The selfie camera, power button, and volume rocker are all on the same side, so it works well when propped up for landscape mode video chats. And one major consideration that shouldn't be ignored is the 3T's price: At $439, it's more than 25% cheaper than any other phone in this list, and overall, it's one of the best bang-for-your-buck phones on the market. Speaker placement leaves a bit to be desired, though. While it's nice and loud, the phone only has a single bottom-firing speaker, which is suboptimal for video chatting. Aside from that, battery life is merely average, so you might have to keep a charger nearby if you plan to do a longer video chat. One final downside here is that the OnePlus 3T does get a little warm when you've been video chatting for more than 30 minutes. Performance holds steady without any noticeable throttling, so this shouldn't have any real impact on your video chatting experience.

3. LG V20LG's latest flagship, the V20, has sold quite well so far, moving more than 200,000 units in its first ten days of availability. This is only the second V series model that LG has released, but it's quickly becoming LG's top flagship device. The LG V20 is a multimedia powerhouse. Image by LG/Flickr The V20 has a very capable front-facing camera. It's only 5 megapixels, but LG kept the resolution at this average tier to accommodate larger sub-pixels, so in the end, picture quality is clear and bright. But the best part about the selfie cam is its wide-angle lens, which captures more of your surroundings than any phone in this list aside from the Galaxy S7 Edge. With Android's Google Play Store, the V20 has access to all major video chatting apps, with the exception of FaceTime. Additionally, all video chat apps get the benefit of seamless transitioning between mobile data and Wi-Fi on the V20. As for button placement, the V20's power toggle won't get in your way because it's actually on the back face of the phone. The volume rocker sits on the same side as the front-facing camera, too, so you won't have to worry about accidental button presses while video chatting in landscape mode. The V20's legendary quad-DAC setup makes sure audio quality is always loud and clear, and its single front-facing speaker has great placement, though it is a bit on the quiet side at only 72 decibels. The phone runs nice and cool, and battery life is above average, but still a shade lower than the iPhone 7 Plus, the Galaxy S7 Edge, and the Google Pixel XL.Note that T-Mobile recently issued a firmware update for their variant of the V20, and it seems to have improved speaker loudness and audio quality across the board. We'll update this post when and if the new firmware becomes available for other models. To summarize, the benefits here are the V20's wide-angle selfie camera lens, front-facing speaker, great button placement, seamless Wi-Fi to mobile data handoff, and above average battery life. On the other hand, drawbacks to consider include mediocre speaker loudness, average selfie cam resolution, and the lack of FaceTime support.

4. Galaxy S7 EdgeAfter the dust settled with the Note7 battery fiasco, the best Samsung phone money can buy right now is the Galaxy S7 Edge. That fact is reflected in the phone's sales numbers, which, when combined with the flat-faced Galaxy S7 model, accounted for 28.9% of all smartphones purchased in the US in 2016. Think of all the people you'll call on your Galaxy S7 Edge. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks When it comes to video calling, the Galaxy S7 Edge excels in large part due to its top-notch battery life, as well as its wide-angle selfie lens, which captures more of the surrounding scene than any of its peers, with the exception of the LG V20. Check out this camera comparison from SuperSaf TV: Selfie videos from the iPhone7 and the Galaxy S7. Image by SuperSaf TV/YouTube As an Android device, the Galaxy S7 Edge doesn't have access to Apple's FaceTime app, but all other popular video calling services are supported, and you can seamlessly transition between Wi-Fi and mobile data while using them. The S7 Edge does have a few downsides, though. Its volume rocker sits directly opposite of the front-facing camera, so when you prop the phone up to chat in landscape mode, it's prone to accidental button presses. And while the front-facing camera is definitely solid, its 5-megapixel resolution is merely average. On top of that, we found the phone's lone speaker is rather quiet (72.9 dB) when compared to the others in this list, which was only compounded by the fact that it resides on the bottom edge of the phone instead of the front. And the phone does get a bit warm after video chatting for extended periods, though that can mostly be attributed to its glass back, which dissipates heat quickly enough to where it doesn't affect performance.

5. Pixel XLGoogle, the maker of Android, has recently started manufacturing its own smartphones under the "Pixel" moniker. Judging by early sales figures, the Pixel appears to be a fan favorite already, as Google's flagship has already outsold established brands such as HTC, LG, and Motorola. The Pixel XL offers a solid all-around video chat experience. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks Google's Pixel and Pixel XL, with identical camera setups, won DxOMark's highest praises when it came to the overall camera experience, outranking every other phone they reviewed. (The iPhone 7 Plus and OnePlus 3T have not been reviewed by DxOMark yet.) The Pixel XL's front-facing camera packs the specs to back this up with an ample 8-megapixel resolution, however, the lens isn't particularly wide-angled.The only common video calling app that isn't supported by the Pixel is FaceTime, with all others running buttery-smooth thanks to the Pixel's optimized version of stock Android. And when you're moving around, the Pixel XL will ensure that your video calls don't drop out, as it seamlessly transitions between Wi-Fi and mobile data. While you're in a call, the Pixel XL runs nice and cool with great performance. Its battery life is tops among the Android devices here, so you won't get interrupted by that pesky "Battery Low" notification unless you're doing a marathon video chat. But the Pixel suffers when it comes to hardware placement. The selfie camera sits directly opposite of the power button and volume rocker, which can result in inadvertent button presses while video chatting in landscape mode. And the single bottom-firing speaker, while loud and clear at 76.7 decibels, does not project the other party's voice in your general direction.Don't Miss: 18 Tips & Tricks to Help You Master Your Google Pixel
ConclusionFaceTime support is one of the biggest factors here, but it might not be important to everyone. For instance, if you plan to video call friends who use non-Apple devices, FaceTime shouldn't even be a consideration, as it only works on iPhones and Macs. That being said, the iPhone 7 Plus is still the best all-around performer when it comes to video chat. It has a top-tier camera, the best battery life, great speaker quality, and virtually no major drawbacks. However, if you're the type that likes to move around while you're in a video call, the Android devices in this list get a leg up, because they're all able to seamlessly transition between Wi-Fi and mobile data. It's also a given that video calling isn't the only factor that needs to be considered when purchasing a new smartphone. So while we hope this comparison helped narrow down your choices, we also encourage you to continue researching other factors on your way to making an informed purchase.Don't Miss: The Specs That Really Count When Buying a SmartphoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+
