Make a solar cell from a condom with this video tutorial. Solar energy is plentiful and better for the environment, so why not take an easily accessible commodity (like a condom), and use it to harvest the power of the sun. To replicate this hack at home, you'll need the following materials: 12 iron hairpins, 2 pennies (pressed before 1982), 2 electrical wires, 1 sheet of aluminum, 2 strong magnets, a condom, and mineral water. For more on making your own condom-based solar cell, watch this how-to.

News: Pixel 3 XL vs. Galaxy Note 9 the Best of Android Compared

News: Pixel 3 XL vs. Galaxy Note 9 the Best of Android Compared
The Pixel 3 XL versus Galaxy Note 9. Stock Android versus Samsung Experience. When I began this comparison, I thought the Pixel 3 XL would be unfairly outmatched. But after looking at the specs side-by-side, you'll see a different picture. This year, Google delivered a worthy alternative to Samsung's best offering. The battle between these two phones has been impressive over the years. While Samsung has been an ambassador for the Android operating system, selling millions of units, the biggest complaint has always been how heavy its skin is. However, because of the Galaxy Note line's top-tier specs, many just stomach the skin in order to enjoy better hardware.Compare that to Pixel (née Nexus) series, which has gone through some changes. At first, Nexus phones were merely a way to show off the newest version of Android on an inexpensive device. When Google switched to the Pixel lineup, they changed their focus. Now, Google is trying to make a top-tier phone that also happens to run stock Android. And after three iterations, it seems Google might have finally bridged the gap between their best phone and Samsung's.

Chart Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks

SoftwareWith these two phones, the software will probably be one of the top reasons you decide to choose one over the other. Either you love Samsung Experience, you are indifferent, or you hate it. Depending on where you fall, how you view the other specs will be affected and ultimately determine which phone you choose.Like most years, this is not only a difference in the visual changes of Samsung's skin, but also what version of Android you want to run. Android 9.0 Pie (which comes with the Pixel 3 XL) looks different from 8.1 Oreo and includes a number of general improvements. Based on Samsung's track record, it will be a few months before the Galaxy Note 9 is running an official version, and this will be the case with the next version of Android, Android Q. Also, Samsung has been notoriously bad at pushing the Android monthly security patches, unlike the Pixel devices. Pixel 3 XL will get security patches for three years in addition to two letter updates (Android Q and Android R). While the Galaxy Note 9 should get a letter update, it will more than likely stop at Android P and stay behind in security patches, leaving it vulnerable to exploits that Google already patched.

CameraWhile on paper, Samsung has a better camera, specs don't tell the complete picture. Even with the Pixel 3 XL's single lens, more than likely, Google will once again have the best camera on a smartphone. Even now, many still consider the Pixel 2 (and 2 XL) the best camera on the market, even beating the likes of new Galaxy Note 9. With a year of data, Google has only improved the quality, resulting in an even better camera. With the Pixel 3 XL, it starts with the Visual Core. The Google-developed NPU is used to process all data captured by the lens and apply machine learning to improve the quality of the photos. Whether it's Google's HDR+ or new features such as Top Shot and Night Sight, AI is enhancing these features based on the subject of your photos. Image by PCMag/YouTube The Galaxy Note 9's big new feature is a variable aperture, a feature first introduced with the Galaxy S9 and S9+. With variable aperture, one of the dual lenses can automatically (and manually) adjust the aperture to let more or less light pass through to the image sensor. These not only make low light photos easier to capture, but give you options for well-lit subjects. The second lens is a telephoto lens that adds 2x optical zoom. This comes in handy for both distant shots and low light, and is a feature we hope Google Pixel will adopt in the future. Google's machine learning-enhanced digital zoom is impressive, but it can't beat optical zoom. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks

DisplayIn almost every quantifiable category, both phones are evenly matched when it comes to their display. Both are using their biggest screen yet, with the Pixel 3 XL rocking a 6.3-inch display and the Galaxy Note 9 using a 6.4-inch display. Both are OLED, each using a Samsung-developed Super AMOLED panel. Image by Rozetked/YouTube Both use the same resolution of 2960 x 1440, which translate in a slightly higher pixel density for the Pixel 3 XL. The Note 9 has a better screen-to-body ratio, and it accomplishes this without a display notch. The closeness in display quality goes even further. DisplayMate gave the Galaxy Note 9 its highest grade of A+, saying the screen was only bested by the iPhone XS Max. But they've also rated the Pixel 3 XL with the highest A+ score, so we'll have to wait on their full review to see which of these two phones has the better screen. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks

Battery & StorageNow that one year has passed without any major issue, Samsung once again feels confident in its ability to push the size of the battery they include in their Galaxy Note series. For the first time in the series, Samsung has added an impressively large 4,000 mAh battery. This capacity more than makes up for the larger display and high resolution, providing it all-day battery. The Pixel 3 XL is a different story. Google opted to decrease the battery size, allowing it to maintain the 0.31 inches depth in both devices. This is both a good and bad thing. Image by Rozetked/YouTube The good thing is the phone remains thin and whether you use the Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL, the feeling of the phone in your hand is more similar than different. However, when you factor in the large screen, battery life will take a hit. To compensate, Google underclocks the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 to 2.5 GHz (from 2.8 GHz) on the Gold Cores and 1.6 GHz (from 1.8 GHz) on the Silver cores to reduce power consumption. And while this should help, this makes the device less powerful than the Galaxy Note 9.As for storage, Galaxy Note 9 also has an advantage. Not only does the Note 9 have a larger starting internal storage (at 128 GB), it also has large maximum storage at half a terabyte. The Note 9 also supports microSD, something the Pixel 3 XL doesn't support. And with the largest microSD card at 512 GB, that means you can have up to 1 TB of storage on your phone with the Galaxy Note 9. Image by Jennifer Welsh/Gadget Hacks While the 64 GB and 128 GB are great storage options, for some, this isn't enough. And although we do see some savings as a result, because the gap in pricing isn't too large, this might be deciding factor for many. Image by Rozetked/YouTube
PriceThe difference in price isn't too bad this year between these two devices. The Pixel 3 XL starts at $899, whereas the Galaxy Note 9 starts at $999. With a $100 difference, the decision is less about price and more about what you want. Do you need a large battery like what's found in the Galaxy Note 9, or do you prefer having a top-notch camera? Would you rather have all the software features imaginable, or would you prefer a smoother software experience? This year, you are not penalized for taking one over the other. Instead, the Pixel 3 XL is an alternative. You (along with many others in the Android community) will be asking these questions when deciding between these two phones, and where is more about what's the right phone for you.Compare the Pixel 3 XL to Other PhonesFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Set Multiple Timers on Your iPhone to Run Side by Side

How To: Set Multiple Timers on Your iPhone to Run Side by Side
Although the Clock app in iOS has undergone some design changes over the years, you still can't set more than one timer on your iPhone. Oddly enough, Apple's own HomePod speaker added this feature, mimicking the timer on Amazon's popular Echo smart speakers. Fortunately, through Apple's Shortcuts app, there's a clever hack to set multiple timers — without using a third-party timer app.Authoring your own automated workflows can be a challenge, especially if you're not a programmer or developer. But there are plenty of shortcuts available from the community that you can use with little effort. And if you want to eventually get to a point where you're making your own shortcuts, using, analyzing, and customizing shortcuts from others is a great way to learn and get there.Don't Miss: Use the Shortcuts App for Custom Siri Actions & More Note that Shortcuts is only available in iOS 12 or higher. Older systems can use Workflow, but the steps may be different, and some features may not be possible.

Step 1: Add the 'Set Multiple Timers' ShortcutApple highlights timer-based shortcuts in the "Gallery" section for actions such as steeping tea and doing laundry, but these are meant for one-at-a-time use cases. However, we built a shortcut called "Set Multiple Timers," and while it's not featured in the Shortcuts Gallery, you can use the link below to install the shortcut.Shortcuts Link: Set Multiple Timers (free) When you open it in Shortcuts, tap "Get Shortcut," then tap the "Library" tab. Find it, then peek-and-pop on its workflow with 3D Touch. Or, if you are using a non-3D Touch iPhone, tap the ellipsis (•••) inside its box to view the actions.

Step 2: Test How Well It WorksTap play to test it out. A popup will appear asking you to name what the timer is for, which helps distinguish between other timers. Name it and tap "OK," then tell the next prompt how many minutes the timer should be and tap "OK." The shortcut actually uses your Reminders app to work its magic, so if you haven't already given Shortcuts access to Reminders, you'll be prompted to do so now. Now, if you typed in 5 minutes, you will get a notification from Reminders in roughly five minutes which reads, "[Task name] timer finished!" Before the timer goes off, you can verify that the reminder has been set by launching Reminders. "[Task name} timer finished!" will be listed in your default Reminders list, whatever that may be (which can be chosen in Reminders' settings). Since this shortcut doesn't use the Clock app and instead uses Reminders, the countdown to the alert is not entirely accurate, making this more useful for tasks that don't need exactness. For example, when you set a timer for your laundry and started boiling noodles for a quick meal. The countdown start time is based on whatever second you start it at, but the end time will be as soon as the minute hand reaches the number of minutes requested. Unless you start it at exactly 00 seconds, the timer will sound off anywhere from 1–59 seconds too soon. More details on this later. As for the notification you'll receive, you have to make sure that notifications for Reminders is toggled on in Settings and that Do Not Disturb is toggled off. Unlike a normal alarm or timer in Clock, a Reminders notification will not be able to bypass those restrictions if they are toggled on.Also, if your iPhone is set to silent (when the hardware "Mute" switch is toggled on along the side), you will not hear the notification chime. Even if it's not on mute, you may want to change the notification sound in Settings to something more noticeable, like a long ringtone, in case your pocket muffles the tone.

Step 3: Add the Shortcuts WidgetNow, you're likely not going to want to open up Shortcuts directly every time you want to set a timer. That's where the Shortcuts widget comes in. Widgets can be accessed on the Today View from the lock screen, home screen, or from the drop-down Notifications Center. The quickest way to add the widget is to just 3D Touch on the Shortcuts home screen icon, then tap "Add Widget" in the widget area of the quick actions. If you don't have 3D Touch or don't like quick actions, you can swipe right from the first home screen page, lock screen, or Notification Center, tap "Edit" at the bottom of the Today View, tap plus (+) next to Shortcuts in the list, and tap "Done."

Step 4: Set Multiple Timers from the Lock ScreenAs mentioned above, you can use the widget on the lock screen. To do so, swipe right on the lock screen, then tap "Set Multiple Timers" in the Shortcuts widget (you may have to tap "Show More" to see it, depending on how many shortcuts you have). This will start the first prompt of naming the timer in the Shortcuts app, and you can proceed as in Step 2 above. If you use a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, you'll have to unlock before being taken to the Shortcuts app.

Step 5: Set Multiple Timers from the Home ScreenJust like with the lock screen, you can start the "Set Multiple Timers" shortcut on the home screen from the Shortcuts widget. Just swipe right on the first home screen page and tap the shortcut's name to start it. If you're in an app like Instagram or Facebook, you can easily swipe down the Notifications Center, swipe right on it, then tap "Set Multiple Timers" from the Shortcuts widget.Alternatively, you can use 3D Touch on the Shortcuts' app icon on the home screen to launch the workflow. When the quick actions appear, tap "Set Multiple Timers" from the widget box to start it. If you don't see it, that's because you can only view the first four shortcuts in your "Library," so if you want to use it here, rearrange the "Library" tab in Shortcuts accordingly. The 3D Touch quick actions on the home screen icon. Wait, I'm not done yet! There's one more thing you can do. Open up the workflow for the "Set Multiple Timers" shortcut in the Shortcuts app, then tap the settings icon up top. Next, tap "Add to Home Screen." This will open up a link to the shortcut in Safari, then you just add it to your home screen like any other webpage. This way, it gets its own home screen icon.Don't Miss: How to Save a Webpage to Your Home Screen for Instant Access

Step 6: Create a Siri Shortcut for ItUnlike the Workflow app in the pre-iOS 12 days, Shortcuts allows for you to use Siri. In the shortcut's workflow, tap the settings icon. You'll see an option to "Add to Siri." Once you tap on it, you'll be taken to a screen where you can type or speak the phrase you desire to trigger "Set Multiple Timers." Once this is complete, you can test it out. Activate Siri however you normally would, then say "Set Multiple Timers" (or whatever phrase you set). Siri will launch that shortcut in the Shortcuts app, starting the first prompt to name the timer. It's worth mentioning that since this shortcut relies on Reminders, you can also generate these "timers" by summoning Siri — without setting a Siri Shortcut by way of the above steps — and stating something like, "Remind me to get laundry at 2 p.m." The resulting reminder notification at 2 p.m. will read "Get Laundry."

Step 7: Understand & Customize the Shortcut's WorkflowLet's look at each of the five actions that make up this shortcut. The first action box, "Ask for Input," gets us started with the question, "Set timer for what?" The Default Answer is blank since this is what we will fill in when prompted (e.g., laundry, pot roast, writing time, etc.). Input Type is set as "Text" because we plan to fill this field with a word or letter, not a number, URL, or date — all of which are options here. The second action box, another "Ask for Input," allows us to set the time, hence the question, "How many minutes?" Default Answer is left blank again since we fill this in on the prompt when using the shortcut. Because this action pertains to the desired minutes, the Input Type will be "Number."These first two action boxes are not sequence-dependent in relation to one another. In other words, you can tap and hold the second "Ask for Input" action box and drag it to the top if you want the "How many minutes?" prompt to precede "Set timer for what?" when using the shortcut. It won't affect the result. The third action box is for "Date." The key thing here is to ensure that "Current Date" is selected. Selecting "Specified Date" would defeat the purpose of this shortcut since setting the reminder is based on "now," not any other date. The fourth action box, "Adjust Date," incorporates the numerical field from the "How many minutes?" action box to the "Date" action box — thus, adding our desired number of minutes to the time at which we set this "timer."Note that with two action boxes for "Ask for Input," this means the "Ask for Input" entry in "Adjust Date" defaults to whichever is second during authoring. Meaning, if you later move "How many minutes" above "Set timer for what?" the "Adjust Date" action will still refer to the numerical entry for "How many minutes?"Be careful, however, if you delete and re-enter "Ask for Input," because if "Set timer for what?" is the second action box, then "Adjust Date" will refer to that "Text" field — thus breaking the shortcut's intended function. The fifth and final action box, "Add New Reminder," brings it all together. Title refers to the text in the Reminders notification — what we see when the "timer" is complete. List defaults to whatever your default list is in the Reminders app. If you only have a couple of lists, tap the one that you want to use. If you have more than one list, tap on the list name, then select from the options available. It might be wise to create a "Timer" list in Reminders just for this purpose.Remind Me can be toggled up or down. When toggled down, you can see the last two relevant fields — Remind and Alert Time. For the former, "At Time" is what we need since our notification should rely on the actual time and not where we are physically. The latter field should include "Adjusted Date" since this is the time ("Date" plus "Adjust Date") we have designated as the end of the timer. To reiterate, this shortcut allows us to create a reminder differently — with custom prompts — while relying on the Reminders app to send a notification to us as though it were the end of a normal timer.
Margin of ErrorKeep in mind that there is a margin of error baked into this shortcut. Because the shortcut essentially creates a reminder for a specific task, that notification may appear up to 59 seconds sooner than desired. For example, if you set a timer with this shortcut at 2 p.m. for a reminder that will come up in 60 minutes, it will actually be a little less than 60 minutes. Why?The reminder notification will be set for 3:00 pm. But when you set the reminder at 2:00 PM, it's likely that you weren't setting it at 2:00 p.m. sharp. Maybe it was a few seconds before 2:01 p.m., in which case the "60" you typed for the second prompt ("How many minutes?") would, in execution, be more like 59 minutes. This is not a huge margin of error, but it's worth understanding this because for some tasks — something short like brewing tea or something involved like baking a soufflé — precision is important. In those cases, it is best to use the regular timer in Clock. You can then pair that with using this shortcut for other things which allows for this 59-second window of imprecision. Finally, don't forget the Reminders notification will only be heard if Do Not Disturb is toggled off, Reminders notifications are toggled on, and the hardware Mute button is switched off. And whether or not you picked a good enough sound for the notification in the Settings app.Until Apple decides to implement multiple timers in the Clock app going forward in iOS 13 or beyond, this is a solution we can experiment with as a workaround. And if you need more precision, third-party apps can help.Don't Miss: How to Calculate Tips Faster on Your iPhone Using the Shortcuts AppFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Make Apps Use the Entire Screen on Your Essential Phone Even the Notch

How To: Make Apps Use the Entire Screen on Your Essential Phone Even the Notch
In the Android community, there's a lot of discussion about how display notches should be used. For some, hiding the notch is more appealing, but others feel that hiding it wastes screen real estate. Well, Essential just provided another solution that should satisfy both sides.Previously, the Essential PH-1 dealt with the notch by hiding it while in landscape and extending the screen around it in portrait mode. However, in the most recent Android 8.1 Oreo build, Essential's new approach perfectly aligns with one of the founding principles of the operating system Andy Rubin created: Choices. Now, Essential users can decide how the notch is used in all apps or on a per-app basis.

Step 1: Unlock Developer Options & Access Notch SettingsThe new feature was first discovered by Android Police. To try it out, you'll have to be running the latest Android 8.1 build, and you'll also have to unlock Developer Options. Use the link below for a simple step-by-step guide on how to do this.Don't Miss: How to Activate the Hidden Developer Options Menu on Android Once unlocked, head to your phone's main settings page and select "System," then choose "Developer options." On the next page, select "Essential notch settings" (the fourth option from the top) to enter the menu containing the display notch controls.

Step 2: Choose How Apps Will Deal with the Notch by DefaultThere are two ways you can control the display notch with these new options. First, you can set up the default behavior for all apps as it pertains to the notch. Secondly, you can control how the notch is dealt with on a per-app basis. For the former, select "Set default for all applications." A popup will emerge presenting you with three options: "Essential recommended", "Don't use notch area in landscape", and "Always use notch area." "Essential recommended" is how things were handled on previous software versions. Essential has been working with developers for months now on including support for the notch, so using this setting will display content over the notch area in certain cases based on their testing."Don't use notch area in landscape" will prevent any app from displaying content around the notch area (particularly videos) by including a black bar to hide the notch. For those who prefer symmetry over display real estate, this will be your preferred option. For those on the other side of the camp, "Always use notch area" will display content over the notch (similar to the iPhone X) to use the maximum amount of screen available.

Step 3: Control the Notch on a Per-App BasisNext, select "Set per application," then choose any app from the list. Here, you can change how an individual app handles the notch. You'll see the same options that you saw with the "Set default for all applications" menu, but there will be one extra: "Use global settings." By leaving the app on "Use global setting," the app will use the setting you chose in Step 2. However, by selecting any of the other options, you can change the way this particular app behaves. Where most people will find this feature helpful is how videos are displayed in landscape.

Step 4: Learn How This Setting Will Affect Video ContentBefore you switch all your video apps to "Always use notch area," be aware that the experience varies among apps. For example, YouTube will display 16:9 videos (the aspect ratio used by most content on its servers) right in the middle of the display. This is because the PH-1 has a 19:10 aspect ratio, which is wider than most YouTube content. It's similar to how old TV shows will have black bars on a new widescreen TV.Since pinch-to-zoom isn't available in the YouTube app on the Essential Phone, you can't actually fill in this area. Depending on how you feel, this may be better than the "Essential recommended," option which will hide the notch and shift the video more to the right. (1) "Essential recommended" hides the display notch, leaving more unused area to the left. (2) With "Always use notch area," the black bars are evened out by centering the video. 2:1 (or 18:9) aspect ratio videos are a little better, as the video will extend the entire width of the phone, with black bars only appearing above and below (think a widescreen video on an HDTV). However, a small number of content creators use the format, so the majority of videos you watch online won't look like the screenshot below. With movie apps, however, you'll see a lot more content like this. Hollywood likes to shoot films in 1.85:1 and 2.39:1, which are both wide enough to fill out the entire width of your phone's screen in landscape mode. (1) "Essential Recommended", (2) "Always use the notch area" The only way to fill out the entire screen would be to view a video at the Essential PH-1's native ratio of 19:10. However, videos in this ratio are even rarer than 2:1 aspect ratio videos. For the lucky few that find these videos, you can enjoy the entirety of your display, no black bars included. 19:10 content fills out the entire screen with no black bars. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks Most video apps seem to follow YouTube's way of handling the notch. In our testing, FIOS Mobile, Twitch, and Mixer displayed their videos in the same way as 16:9 aspect ratio YouTube videos. Netflix was the only app we tested that used 19:10 aspect ratio video (1.85:1 movies), allowing the full screen to be used for consumption.Apps, other than those which display video, will use the entire notch area when "Always use notch area" is enabled. Content will take up the entirety of the display, with the right side of the screen housing the navigation buttons. While Essential's controls aren't perfect, we now have a choice when it comes to viewing content. With more notched Android phones like the Huawei P20 and LG G7 ThinQ on the horizon, this is a big issue that will need to be ironed out. Hopefully these OEMs add a similar implementation to Essential's approach so that their users have more control, especially for a trend that many didn't ask for.Don't Miss: Essential Phone Now Available in 3 Stunning New ColorsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Hide Status Bar Icons on Your iPhone for a Cleaner Look in Apps & Wallpapers
You can view battery information in the Today View, you already know what carrier services you, and you can quickly figure out with normal use whether your display orientation is locked, so what do you need the status bar at the top of your iPhone? If you don't find much use for it and would like to see more of your wallpaper, there's a way you can get rid of it for good. While there is no default setting in iOS that will let you hide the status bar at the top of the screen, there is a jailbreak tweak that gives the ability to do so. Obviously, you will need to be jailbroken in order to use this tweak, which shouldn't be too big a problem with a reliable iOS 11 jailbreak available.Don't Miss: How to Jailbreak iOS 11 on Your iPhone — No Computer Required To customize your home screen, lock screen, or anywhere else the status bar appears, we'll be using the HideStatusBarItems mod by developer Chashmeet Singh. With this tweak, you won't just be able to hide the whole status bar, but you'll be able to just hide individual icons in the status bar in case you still want to see things like Wi-Fi signal and reception bars.

Step 1: Install HideStatusBarItemsOpen the Cydia app on your iPhone, tap the magnifying glass icon in the lower right, then input "hidestatusbaritems" in the search field. Tap on the result of the same name when you see it, then tap "Install" in the upper right of the Details page to proceed with installing HideStatusBarItems. On the tweak's confirmation page, tap "Confirm" in the upper right to finalize the installation. The tweak will now be downloaded onto your device, so wait for the process to complete. Select "Restart SpringBoard" after it's done to respring your iPhone and finish installing HideStatusBarItems.

Step 2: Pick What Icons to HideYou're now free to hide specific items on your iPhone's status bar. You can hide just a few icons or all of them for no status bar at all. To do so, open the Settings app, then scroll down and select "HideStatusBarItems." Once inside, the first thing you'll want to do is enable HideStatusBarItem by putting the toggle next to "Enable Tweak" to the on position.Don't Miss: How to Customize the Carrier Name in Your iPhone's Status Bar From there, select from the long list of icons you wish to hide, which includes everything you can imagine — you can disable icons for VPN, Alarm, Battery, Airplane Mode, Carrier Text, Location, Bluetooth, and more. Once you're done with your selections, tap on "Apply Changes" to apply the settings. A confirmation prompt will now appear, so hit "OK" to proceed, then wait a moment for your device to respring. Once it has, your status bar will now be free of those pesky icons that used to clutter it. Hiding all the icons in one go, for instance, gives your iPhone screen a truly minimalistic appearance, though space previously occupied by the icons still remains. Keep in mind that if you've opted to hide all the icons, you won't be able to view your iPhone's signal strength for both Wi-Fi and cellular service, along with battery meter, time, or the lock screen's lock icon. However, you'll still be able to view the time and date either from the widget on the lock screen or by swiping down from the top of your screen. The battery status can be viewed in the Today View as long as you added it as a widget there. That said, it's very easy to undo the tweak and make the status bar icons on your iPhone visible once again. To do so, simply tap on the toggle next to "Enable Tweak" within HideStatusBarItems' settings page to disable the feature entirely, and you're all set. Or, un-toggle some of the icons you want to see again and tap "Apply Changes."Don't Miss: This Tweak Gives You iPhone X Gestures on Any iPhone Running iOS 11Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: The Specs That Really Count When Buying a Phone

How To: The Specs That Really Count When Buying a Phone
When shopping for a new smartphone, you'll encounter comparisons and spec sheets that are filled to the brim with values like mAh, GB, and GHz. To the average consumer, however, these values are meaningless, so we end up looking at which device has the specs with the highest actual numbers.Don't Miss:Having Trouble Picking a New Phone? This Chart Will Help You ChooseBut as the saying goes, there's lies, damned lies, and statistics. This adage holds true for smartphone and tablet specs, as some numbers are far more important than others, and in several instances, a smaller number is actually better than a larger one.So to help you make sense of all the raw data offered by device manufacturers, I'll try my best to break down each of the key specs into layman's terms below. There's not a one-size-fits-all smartphone buyer's guide, but if you know what specs actually matter and what to look out for, you'll be able to make a well-informed decision on your next major purchase.

Screen: Keep Counting PixelsAccording to Steve Jobs (while marketing the term "Retina Display"), the human eye is incapable of detecting any more than 300 pixels in a square inch of a display, when that display is 12 inches away. This gave rise to the popular misconception that displays can't get any sharper than what our current technology already allows for—but as sure as carrot juice can't cure cancer, Jobs was wrong here. iPhone 6 display with 326 ppi. Image by Olena Kachmar/123RF Display resolution does still matter, as the human eye is capable of detecting up to 900 pixels in a square inch, and that's still out of reach with current technology. The key spec to look for here is a screen's pixel density (generally labeled either DPI or PPI), which represents the number of pixels per square inch in a display. In this day and age, anything with a DPI value over 250 should be acceptable, but if you're paying flagship prices, you should expect at least 400 here. Sony's Xperia Z5 Premium display with 806 ppi. Image via Sony The downside to high DPI values is that more computing power is required to keep track of all those pixels. And with smartphones, higher power usage translates directly to more battery drain, so you may want to stick to a range between 300 and 500 DPI for a balance of performance and efficiency.
RAM: The More the MerrierRAM (commonly referred to as memory, but not to be confused with storage) is where bits of data are stored as they wait in line to be processed by your CPU. This really comes into play when you're multitasking, as recently-active apps are stored in your phone's RAM just in case you might want to switch back to them sometime soon.Taking that concept a step further, things like your keyboard, your phone's system interfaces, and your home screen are almost always stored in RAM—because the smart people behind Android and iOS know that you may need any of these things at a moment's notice. And depending on the system, these basic elements can permanently occupy up to half a gigabyte of RAM, so you know you need at least that much to begin with. When shopping for devices, look for a phone with at least 2 GB (gigabytes) of RAM. Apple devices are generally more RAM-efficient than their Android counterparts, but even then, last year's iPhone 6s was upgraded to include 2 GB, so this has become the new minimum. With modern Android devices, 3 or 4 GB is the sweet spot, though more is always better on this front.
Processor (Part 1): Clock Speed & Die SizeAt the heart of your phone lies its processor, or CPU. This is effectively the brain of your device, and its specs determine whether your phone feels "fast" or "slow." But speed isn't the only spec that matters with a processor, because other factors are at play when you consider battery efficiency, multitasking, and the ability to perform functions when your screen is off.The most fundamental measurement of a processor's quickness is its clock speed, which is usually represented as a gigahertz value. Today's fastest mobile processors have clock speeds ranging from 1.8 GHz to 2.2 GHz, though anything above 1 GHz should be acceptable.Beyond clock speed, a second factor to consider here is the processor's die size. For the sake of simplicity, this is the size of the physical pieces that make up a CPU. Everything else being equal, a smaller die size is superior because less heat is generated, meaning less energy is wasted. Today's top mobile processors have a 14-nanometer die size, and the generation before this one sported 20-nanometer dies, so anything in that range should be your target here.

Processor (Part 2): Multi-Core & Individual Core PerformanceNowadays, you'll be hard-pressed to find a single-core processor. With the advent of multi-core processors, the days of apps freezing or locking when the operating system was maxing out the CPU are long gone, as additional processes can now be handled by a different processor core.So multi-core processors are obviously better, but how many cores do you need? The short answer is "at least two cores," but of course there's a longer answer.First, as long as a processor has at least two cores, clock speed should still be the main differentiating factor when picking a CPU. A dual-core processor with higher clock speeds will usually outperform a chip that has lower clock speeds, but more cores. This is because most apps are programmed to only run on one CPU core at a time, so the faster the individual core performance, the better. But a second factor to consider here is that some graphics-intensive apps can indeed distribute their workload across multiple cores. Mobile games are just now starting to be programmed this way, as are photo and video editing apps. For these types of apps, a CPU with more cores will be beneficial, provided the clock speed of the individual cores is still up to snuff. A9 dual-core 1.8 GHz processor in the iPhone SE. Image by iFixit/YouTube In summary, always look for a CPU with fast clock speeds, regardless of the amount of cores it has. But if you're a gamer, a graphics artist, or a video editor, a CPU with lots of cores may indeed be a better fit—though only if the clock speed is still on par with your other options.
Processor (Part 3): Low-Power Cores & ArchitectureAnother major benefit to a mobile processor with multiple cores is that, lately, one or more of these cores are being assigned to low-power tasks that can be quite helpful. For instance, some mobile processors will have a low-power core dedicated to an always-listening "OK Google" or "Hey Siri" trigger phase, which can wake your device from sleep to perform a voice search. Instead of using a main processor core to constantly listen for this trigger phrase, the low-power core can accomplish the same task while having minimal impact on battery life. And speaking of battery life, the architecture used in your CPU can have quite a big impact on this front. Most mobile processors are built on ARM or ARM64 architecture, which is quite fast at entering a low-power sleep mode when you're not actively using your device. However, some mobile processors use X86 or X64 architecture, which was initially designed for desktop computers with raw power and speed in mind, but doesn't have the same chip sleep efficiency. So to summarize here, look for a processor with low-power cores that perform useful tasks while your screen is off without sucking down battery. And if battery life is important to you, it's probably best to stick with devices that use ARM or ARM64 architecture instead of X86 or X64.
GPU: Cores Do MatterWhile we're on the subject of processors and cores, a device's graphics processing unit, or GPU, can be a big factor in real-world performance—especially if you're into mobile gaming. But most phones these days use a setup called "System on a Chip," or SoC, which means that unlike desktop computers, the GPU is baked right in with the CPU.This means that it can be hard to distinguish the specs of the actual GPU in a mobile device, since they're usually lumped in as part of the CPU specs. But rather than dissecting and diagnosing these specs, a simpler approach would be to just look at the GPU model number. Snapdragon SoCs use Adreno GPUs, Exynos uses Mali, and Apple's A9 chips have PowerVR graphics processors. Find these keywords in a spec sheet, then look for the numbers that directly follow them. A higher number is better here, so an Adreno 530 offers a superior gaming experience to that of an Adreno 418, for instance.

Storage: External vs. Internal & the CloudA device's storage capacity (again, not to be confused with RAM or memory) is an important spec to look for if you save files like pictures, videos, and MP3s on your phone or tablet. The more storage a device offers, the more room you'll have to store these types of files. This is another spec that uses gigabytes for its value, and storage is usually offered in multiples of 8 GB.But these days, your phone's operating system can occupy as much as 4 GB of storage by itself, so 8 GB is simply not viable anymore, and 16 GB should be the bare minimum. Beyond that, though, the amount of storage you'll need will depend on how you use your device. Nexus 6P vs. iPhone 6s. Nexus and iPhones do not have expandable storage. Image by Tech Stage/Flickr If you stream your music from a service like Spotify instead of saving the MP3s directly to your device, storage shouldn't be a big issue. Same goes if you keep your photos and videos synced to the cloud with a service like Google Photos, because the actual files are stored on an external web server and simply viewed on your device instead of saved locally. Some devices offer expandable storage (also known as external storage), which means that if you run out of the regular internal storage space, you can simply pop in an SD card to get more. So if one of your finalists offers this option along with a base internal storage level of at least 16 GB, I'd go with that one instead of paying hundreds more to get the 32 or 64 GB variant of its competitor.

Battery: It's All About the mAhBattery life is important to everyone, and as far as specs go, there's only one number that matters: milliampere hours. This number is usually depicted as an mAh value, and it's about as straightforward as it gets.To put it simply, the higher the mAh value, the longer the device's battery will last. Of course, processor efficiency, screen size, display type, and other specs play a big role in battery life, but all else being equal, go with the device that has the higher mAh value. Camera: Megapixels Don't Matter AnymoreFor years now, manufacturers have been engaged in a spec race when it comes to cameras, and the focus of this numbers war has always been megapixels. It's an easy spec for consumers to understand, because more megapixels means your photos are comprised of more tiny little dots, and should thus be higher in resolution. However, we crossed the Steve Jobs-Retina line years ago, and even the cheapest camera sensors are now capable of capturing more megapixels than the human eye can see. For instance, a top-of-the-line 4K TV has a resolution of 8.3 MP, so anything above that number can't even be properly displayed on the highest-resolution screen in your house. So instead of getting caught up in the megapixel hype, look for a camera with a bigger sensor size, larger pixel size, and a wider aperture. Keep in mind that some of these specs are represented as fractions, which can be a bit confusing. Pixel size will be a raw number, so the bigger the better there. But aperture is represented as "f/2.0" (f divided by 2.0) for example, so the smaller the number (divisor), the wider the aperture. Same goes for sensor size, where it's 1 divided by however many inches, so look for a smaller divisor number here as well. When it comes to video recording, most of these numbers are straightforward, so bigger is better. Higher recording resolution (1080p, 2160p, etc.) will help ensure that your video clips don't look outdated too soon, and a high frame rate (60 fps, 120 fps, etc.) will lead to smoother motion. While the Moto Z Force packs a 21 MP camera, it also features an f/1.8 aperture, OIS, 1080p videos, 60 fps, deep trench isolation, and more. Image via Motorola One final thing to consider here is image stabilization. Optical image stabilization (OIS) is a feature on higher-end mobile cameras that mechanically stabilizes your camera sensor to reduce shaking in videos and blur in still photos. Electronic image stabilization (EIS) accomplishes the same task, but it's done with anti-shake and anti-blur software after you've finished recording, so it's not quite as good. However, EIS is better than no image stabilization at all, so look for an OIS camera first, an EIS camera second, and pass on a device that doesn't support either.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

How To: Get Google's Latest Play Store Redesign on Your Nexus 7 Tablet Right Now

What's the most installed Android app in the world? Facebook? Gmail? Maps? While those all have well over 100 million installs, the one that takes the cake—and always will—is Google Play.I've been an Android user ever since the G1, when Android was unpolished, buggy, and the Play Store was still called the Android Market. Back then, the fonts were big and ugly, and the apps were downright awful to use. Images via smartphoneblogging.com, wordpress.com Imagine the days of Windows 95, then shrink it down to a 3-inch screen. That's what the Android Market was like in 2008.Fast forward to now. Android is number one in market share, and Google's Holo UI on stock Jelly Bean is redefining what a mobile operating system should be. It's clean, simple, unobtrusive, and fast.To complement Holo, Google released the fourth major Play Store redesign. Unfortunately, many devices have yet to receive this update—including my Nexus 7 tablet. There's no telling when it will hit our devices, but if you want the new design now rather than later, you'll need to install it manually. So today, I'll show you exactly how to do that.

Download & Install the Play Store APKOn your Nexus 7, head over to this link and download the Play Store APK. Image via wonderhowto.com It has been signed by Google, which means it's guaranteed to be safe and virus-free. Just tap on the APK to install the Play Store and... That's it! You'll be presented with the new Play Store when you launch it. Everything you're use to will still be there—buttons, tabs, and all. This new Holo-style update is a visual refresh on the dated Gingerbread-era Play Store. If you ask me, it's clean, simple, and easy to use, just like an app store should be. Give it a try and enjoy! If you want something entirely differently on your Nexus 7, try installing the Amazon Appstore or Tablified Market instead.

Instagram 101: How to Add #Hashtags & @Account Tags to Your Bio

Your Instagram bio could always be used to link to other websites or profiles or just to show off your witty personality. Now, you also have the ability to use this section to tag other Instagram accounts as well as add tappable hashtags. Whether you want to link out to your best friend, company, or the latest trend in your city — if it has a profile name or tag, it can be in your bio. These new tagging features were added as a server-side update on March 21, 2018, but as always, make sure you're running the latest version of Instagram for Android or iOS. Then, in the Instagram app, tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the display. Next, tap "Edit Profile. On the following page, tap the gray "Bio" or your current bio's words to launch the bio editor.Don't Miss: How to Follow Hashtags on Instagram & Curate Your Feed

Tagging Hashtags & AccountsOnce in the editor, you can type either a # or @ sign to tag a hashtag or user account, respectively. When you type a # on iOS, you will automatically see trending posts in your area, but you can continue typing to find the specific hashtag you want. On Android, it won't pull up suggestions until you type at least one letter. An @ symbol will pull up suggested user accounts for you to tag, but you can always keep typing to find the specific account you're looking for. When you find a hashtag or account you like, tap on it to add it to the bio editor or, if applicable, tap the word on the keyword shortcut on your keyboard. When finished, tap "Done" or tap the checkmark icon, then, on the Edit Profile page, tap "Done" or hit the checkmark again to save your edits. If unhappy, you can always tap "Cancel" or hit the "X" to revert to the bio you had (or didn't have) before.Don't Miss: How to Track & Manage Your Instagram Hashtags Once saved, Instagram will load back to your profile, where you can check out your new bio. Tap any of the tags you made, and you'll jump right to them. If you tagged an account, you'll open their Instagram profile. If you tagged a hashtag, you'll find yourself on its page.

Accounts Can Remove Their Tag Link from Your BioIt's worth noting that when you tag users in your bio, they get an alert on Instagram. These users have the option to remove the link from your bio if they want to, although they cannot remove the text itself. With that in mind, it's definitely worth considering the user you're tagging in your post.
