If you're anything like me, you started down the Android-modding path for two distinct reasons; to run cutting-edge software and squeeze every bit of performance out of your hardware. Utilizing the new F2FS file system on your rooted Nexus 4 or 5 fulfills both of those desires at the same time.
What Is F2FS?F2FS, which stands for Flash-Friendly File System, is a new file system that was developed last year by a team from Samsung. It was developed and optimized specifically to be used with NAND flash memory, the type of storage used in our phones and tablets.A file system governs how data is written to and read from your device's storage memory, and its performance can make a big difference in the overall speed of an operating system. According to benchmark testing, F2FS provides a significant performance increase in most I/O operations over the more commonly used EXT4 file system, especially when it comes to database operations and data writing.These types of performance gains typically yield a more responsive Android experience, and what's not to like about that? Here's how to get F2FS on your Android device. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesA rooted Nexus 4 or 5. A Windows computer with the proper phone drivers and Fastboot installed. An up-to-date backup of your data (this process will result in a full data wipe) that is stored in a location that is not your device, such as cloud storage or computer. Any 4.4 KitKat ROM with Busybox bundled in (most custom ROMs will have this). Please note that without Busybox present, the converted ROM will not boot.
Step 1: Download the ToolsCreate a new folder on your computer's "C" drive, then download the appropriate convertor and recovery files to it:F2FS ROM Convertor: Nexus 4 / Nexus 5 F2FS Compatible Recovery: Nexus 4 / Nexus 5 Now, to the root directory of your Nexus device's SD card, download:FormatPartitions.zip (same file for both devices) Once all file are downloaded, it's time load up your ROM and convert it! Follow along with the video embedded above if you need a more visual cue for any of the upcoming steps.

Step 2: Load Your ROM FileExtract the F2FS ROM Converter .zip file that you downloaded in Step #1. Make sure that there are no spaces in the path that you extract it to. For example:This will work: C:\F2FS\F2FSConverter.zip This will NOT: C:\F2FS Stuff\F2FSConverter.zip When you extract the .zip file, it will create several folders and two batch files, one to convert your ROM, and the other to perform cleanup afterwards. Double-click on the F2FS Converter.bat file to open the batch file. Select your device from the provided options. In the case of the Nexus 4, there is only a single option. Select Option #1 to Unpack your ROM.Next you will be asked to place the ROM that you want to convert into the EXTRACT\INPUT folder that was created when you extracted the F2FSConverter .zip file. Once the ROM is copied over, you can hit any key to proceed, as instructed by the converter. Next, the converter will delete and replace your original boot.img file. Select the correct option for your ROM, telling the converter if your ROM is AOSP- or CyanogenMod-based. If your ROM is either of these, check with your ROM developer to ensure that their build will support F2FS conversion, then select Option #14.

Step 3: Convert Your ROM to Support F2FSNext, you will be returned to the Unpack/Repack screen. This time, select Option #2 to Repack the ROM, and the converter will now copy over the new boot.img and updater script. Once that is complete, a new black window will open that will repack the ROM back into a flashable .zip archive. Be sure to keep both windows open until the process is completely finished, which can take between 10 and 15 minutes. Once the repacking is complete, your new F2FS-enabled ROM will be available in the NEW F2FS ROM folder within the same directory.
Step 4: Copy the Converted ROM to Your DeviceTransfer your new F2FS-compatible ROM from your computer to your device, via a USB cable, so that it's ready to be flashed.

Step 5: Flash an All-F2FS Compatible RecoveryTurn on your device by holding the Power and Volume Down buttons until the fastboot menu appears, then connect your device to your computer via a known working USB cable.Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the F2FS-Compatible Recovery in Step #1, then press Shift while right-clicking and select "Open command window here," then type the following command:For the Nexus 4, use this command:fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.0-mako-All-F2FS.imgFor the Nexus 5, use this command:fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.0-hammerhead-All-F2FS-2.img

Step 6: Format PartitionsEnter into the newly installed recovery by pushing the Volume Down key on your phone until you see "Recovery Mode" at the top of the screen. Press the Power button to enter the recovery.Note that the back button on the bottom right side of the screen will now be red. This is to indicate that you have the new F2FS-enabled recovery installed, versus the standard TWRP, although the functionality will be the same.From the new recovery, tap Install and select the FormatPartitions-mako.zip that you downloaded in Step #1, then Swipe to Install. Once the .zip file is installed, reboot the recovery by tapping Home to return to the main menu and then selecting Reboot -> Recovery. If you are asked if you want to install SuperSU to root your device, select Do Not Install.

Step 7: Flash F2FS-Converted ROMOnce the recovery reboots, tap Install and select the F2FSROM.zip that you placed on your device's SD card in Step #3, then swipe the slider on the bottom to Confirm Flash. Note: You can also flash a compatible GApps package if Google Apps (including the Play Store) are not included in your ROM.You're almost done at this point, but make sure you do not reboot your device yet!

Step 8: Format Data PartitionReturn to the homepage of your recovery and enter the Wipe menu to wipe the Data partition.In TWRP, this can be done by entering the Wipe menu, tapping Data and typing "yes" to confirm. This will wipe all of your apps, backups, pictures, video, etc., so be sure that you have an up-to-date backup of your important data, stored in a location that is not on your device. Once the data partition is wiped, you can reboot your device.

Step 9: Profit! Enjoy Your Speed & StabilityYour device is now using the the Flash-Friendly File System. Your phone should feel more responsive, especially when performing tasks that heavily involve reading from or writing to the file system. Let us know what you think of F2FS in the comments.

Step 1: Install 'Custom Stock Lollipop LockscreenTo begin, head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app and search for Custom Stock Lollipop Lockscreen, then tap the top result. Step 3: Set Your Custom ShortcutsWhen you get back up, open the "Custom Stock Lollipop Lockscreen" app that you'll find in your app drawer. There are only two options in hereâ€”"Left Shortcut" and "Right Shortcut." These refer to the swipe-in gestures that you can perform from either side of your lock screen, which open the Phone and Camera apps respectively.To make one of these gestures launch a custom app, tap the associated entry. From here, simply choose your favorite app from the list. You can repeat this process for the other gesture if you'd like, but it should be noted that replacing either gesture will cause the corresponding icon in the corner of your lock screen to turn into a small circle.Nonetheless, you can now launch your custom app directly from the lock screen. The internet's an amazing place. The entirety of human knowledge is now accessible in an instant, and all sorts of media can be streamed directly to the palm of your hand. But, of course, that also includes the darker side of humanity, so there's plenty of NSFW content floating around out there that's certainly not suitable for children.Porn and other risquÃ© media are now more prevalent than ever, so as much as your kids can benefit from having access to a smartphone or tablet, you still have to be vigilant and keep an eye on their internet usage. Even a seemingly innocuous site can have some seriously indecent pop-up ads, so it's a hard thing to really keep track of.Thankfully, developer Mahadi Xion has an app that should help quite a bit. It's a ported version of the popular content blocker AdAway, but customized to specifically block porn sites and popups instead of ads. Step 1: Install PornAwayOnce you've got the device rooted (or if it was already rooted to begin with), the first thing you'll need to do is install the porn-blocking app, which is fittingly called PornAway. To do that, tap the following link, then press the Download complete notification when the file is finished downloading. From there, simply tap the "Install" button when prompted.Download the PornAway content blocker app (.apk) Note: Future updates to this app can be found at the developer's thread on XDA.

Step 2: Patch Your Hosts File & RebootNext, open PornAway, then within a few seconds, you'll be prompted to give the app root access, so tap "Grant" on the popup. From there, press the "Apply Porn Blocking" button near the top of the app's main menu, then tap "Yes" when asked to reboot the phone. It's worth noting at this point that PornAway functions exactly the same as AdAway, and that's by modifying the device's hosts file to add a blacklists of sites that simply won't be allowed to load. This makes it very effective at blocking content, but it does have one downside: It won't work in conjunction with AdAway, since the two apps modify the same file.

Step 3: Unroot (Optional)Once the device finishes rebooting, you can completely uninstall PornAway if you'd like, as the app has already done its job. While you're cleaning things up, you may also want to unroot the device, which would be helpful if you have a teenager who you think might be compelled to undo your porn-blocking modification. Without root, there will be no way to revert the modified hosts file, so porn content would be permanently blocked on this device.So if you'd like to unroot, open the SuperSU app from the app drawer, which was installed automatically when you rooted the device. From there, head to the Settings tab, then scroll down a bit and tap the "Full unroot" option. Finally, press "Continue" on the popup, then wait as long as a few minutes while the process takes place. When it's done, the phone will reboot and it will be completely unrooted.

Step 4: Enjoy a Kid-Safe SmartphoneFrom now on, porn sites will simply refuse to load on this device. The porn-blocking blacklist is quite extensive, so every major site in this category is blocked. Of course, it's possible that a new porn site might be created and make its way through in a rare situation, but the internet should now be a much safer place for your children. If you have no desire to get a separate Mac desktop computer, but want to either supersize your laptop's screen for gaming or need to get additional screen real estate while you work, then connecting your MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro to an external display is the right call.

Connecting Your External DisplayWhether you are connecting your external monitor to your Mac notebook using HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, DVI, Mini-DVI, or Micro-DVI, the process is exactly the same.Simply connect your computer to your external display with the proper cable/s (and adapters, if necessary) and make sure the monitor is powered on. Your Mac should automatically detect the additional monitor, and it will act as an extended desktop to your primary one (AKA your Mac's screen).You can change its desktop background in System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver, if you want a different look.If for some reason your monitor isn't recognized by your MacBook model, open up System Preferences, and in the Displays settings pane, click on Detect Displays. If you see Gather Windows instead, hold down the Option key to make it change to Detect Displays, then click on it. This should make your external display function properly. If it still doesn't work, or you don't see the Detect Displays button, make sure your cables are connected well (and that you have the right cables/connectors), and that the monitor is powered up, then try again. You may have something wrong with your cables/connectors or ports if it still doesn't work.

Setting Your Monitor as Your Primary DesktopNow that you have your new monitor connected and detected, you may want to set it as your primary desktop. This will make it so that your menu bar, dock, and desktop (as well as everything on your desktop) are displayed on the external monitor instead of on your Mac's screen.To do that, head to System Preferences -> Displays, and in the Arrangement sub-menu, drag the small white menu bar box over your Mac's desktop window to the larger external monitor's thumbnail. Both screens will automatically refresh to the new configuration.

Adjusting the Display ResolutionIf you don't like the resolution of your second monitor, you can change it from the default to a scaled version that's better suited to your needs. Though, I always find that the default ends up being the best, so if you're unsure, just stick with that. On your external monitor's settings, just make sure Display is selected, then change "Default for display" to "Scaled" and choose your preferred resolution.

Rotating the DisplaySome people, like graphic designers, like to have their second monitor in a vertical position vs. landscape. If your monitor is equipped to rotate between vertical and landscape orientations, and you want the vertical look, you'll need to make sure your settings are adjusted as such. On your external monitor's settings, just make sure Display is selected, then change Rotation to whatever you need it to be.

Mirroring Displays InsteadAlternatively, you can enable Mirror Displays (just check the box next to it) to have your external display show the exact same thing that appears on your Mac's screen. When video mirroring, your Mac will try to use the same resolution, or closest resolution, that it uses on its built-in display to the external monitor.
Using Your Mac with the Lid ClosedIf you don't want an extended desktop, and don't want to mirror your displays, then you probably just want a bigger screen for your computer. This can be done using clamshell mode. In order to do this, your Mac notebook will need to be connected to its power adapter, and you'll need an external keyboard and mouse (or trackpad).If using a wired keyboard and mouse, make sure they're connected, then simply close the lid on your Mac notebook. If you're running OS X Lion or later, your desktop should automatically appear on the monitor after flashing blue for a second. For those of you with Snow Leopard or older, you'll have to press a key or click a mouse button to see the desktop.For a keyboard and mouse connected via Bluetooth, it's the exact same thing, except you need to verify the devices are paired properly, and you need to make sure "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" is checked by going to System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Advanced.To exit clamshell mode, put your computer to sleep, then disconnect the external monitor from your Mac's display port.

More Options for External MonitorsIn your external monitor's settings, depending on the type of monitor you have, you may have other options you can customize, under the Options tab. Originally funded through Kickstarter, the free to download card game is basically an obscene version of Apples to Apples.The gameplay is simple, you have at least three players (four or more are recommended) who draw ten white cards each, with one communal black card presented with a question or statement. The objective is to either answer the question or fill in the blank with the one card in your stack that you think has the best, crudest, and/or funniest answer. One person, dubbed the Card Czar, sits out the round to determine which answer they subjectively find the bestâ€”whoever supplied the winning card wins the round and earns a point/drink/whatever crazy rules your group comes up with, and becomes the next Card Czar.The hilariousness comes from the crude, immature, and vulgar answers that you provide. Casts Against Civility Is Out for AndroidWhile the game is a ton of fun, it does rely on someone bringing their deck of cardsâ€”until now. Created by Dylan Pollard, the same great dev that brought us QCast (trivia for Chromecast), Casts Against Civility is an unofficial version of the game that has been made available for Android devices. The app puts the game on your HDTV, allowing anyone with an Android device and a Wifi connection to play. I asked the dev if there was a limit to the amount of players, and he responded that "you could technically get 20+ people on the same Wifi to connect to the same Chromecast and play", which is freaking awesome for small and huge parties alike.

Getting StartedObviously, you will need a Chromecast dongle, as well as the game itself installed on every Android device that is playing. Now launch the Casts Against Civility game, create a unique (and hilarious) player name in Player Options, then go back and tap the Cast button on the top right corner. To really enjoy this game, make sure you have at least three playersâ€”although you can technically play with two, it's not nearly as entertaining.

GameplayOnce you hit the cast button, a question or phrase (with a missing word) will be displayed on your HDTV. Unless you are the Card Czar, ten cards will show on your device. Pick the card you'd like to play, then select Play This Card to finalize. Your card will then be anonymously placed on the screen.

Card CzarThe Card Czar's screen will have the answer cards displayed, and once all players have submitted their white cards, the Czar will decide a winner, who will earn an Awesome Point. Questions, responses, players, and points are all displayed on the big screen, so everyone can join in for collective laughter and banter. When you're done playing, just tap the three dot menu on the top right and hit "Quit"â€”any number of people can quit the game while the rest continue to play.
The Bad and the UglyThis game is fun as hell, but it is still in beta, so there are some inevitable bugs and glitches. It took me a while to connect one of my devices, though it worked eventually. Some questions are displayed with errors, rendering them incomprehensible, and switching between portrait and landscape mode can make the content of the cards disappear (so hold still).Eventually the bugs should get fixed, as the app is tightened up. Still, as a beta version, it ain't bad and still provides a heap of laughs.
Update 1Well, it didn't take very long for the official Cards Against Humanity folks to sniff out this app and serve a little legal warning. It started off easy enough, with a request for a name change. But then things got a little more real, with the Cards Against Humanity guys saying they would issue a takedown request to Google if all of their content remained in the app.At this point, it seems like the dev is willing to comply, so this is where you guys come inâ€”join the Cards Against Civility Beta Google+ group, and start submitting your own content for white and black cards. This great app can easily stay afloat, and get much bigger and better, with the help of the community.

Update 2In response to the Cards Against Humanity team, Casts Against Civility has gone through quite a few changes in the past couple of days, and is now called Dehumanize Your Friends.Many of the changes were fleshed out in the app's beta channel, and aside from the name change, here's what else you can expect from the latest version:There is no more black. Everything you've ever known to be black has never been black. It was purple the whole time. Implemented shuffle, cards are in random order when revealed to the King. Things just look a lot better overall, and some of the logic is a lot more stable (awesome) as well. Gone is the "Card Czar", and in its place a Kingâ€”whomever is the King for the round will have a crown showing on their device. The aesthetics are a big change, but for me, the stability improvements are the real winner here. The connections are immediate, and your Chromecast will instantly return to its home screen when the last player disconnects their device.It's Friday and the weekend is around the corner...grab that Chromecast and take the party with you!
